Our Story

Shipley Studio was born in New Hudson, Michigan in 1986 as a studio for making functional porcelain pottery; Sue and I started morphing from Apple Lane Pottery; my mentor’s studio in the same town. Deciding to blaze our own trail when the owner decided to cut back his work schedule.

To compliment my studio work, I have had several unique jobs for the medical insurance they provided...and a steady pay check was no little matter. U.S. Marine,Wildlife Ranger, Potter, Reptile Show Performer and Golf Course Superintendent are just a few of my choices of unique job opportunities I have picked. I learned to keep journals of my activities knowing that some day they would be great fodder for memoirs that needed to be told and message delivered with the hopes of inspiring people of all ages to seek the adventurous route in life and not settle for the “norm”.

Being in the right place at the right time plays a big roll in one’s choices; and it is up to the individual to be smart and aware enough to see the adventure for what it is and have the fortitude and courage to grasp and hold on for the ride.

With arthritis starting to take a toll on my hands from the years of throwing, I have cut back my time in pottery studio doing just a few shows a year; choosing instead to direct most of my efforts to writing and releasing my first memoir, “The Adventure: The Art Of Earning One’s Stripes” about my five plus years working with exotic animals that took me through a whirlwind of constant adventures including raising a baby white rhino named Loretta to raising and training a pride of lions for to work in a Hollywood movie and escorting a shipment of animals by freighter to Japan; developing and preforming a reptile show for the wildlife Park upon my return.
