Great Information Shared by a fellow breeder.

Eyes: They are almond-shaped, of medium size and never properly appear to be large or prominent. The color is dark and the eye does not show a yellow ring or a sufficiently prominent haw to affect the dog's expression. The eyes have a clear,
bright appearance, expressing intelligent inquisitiveness, particularly when the ears are drawn up and the dog is on the alert. In blue merles, dark brown eyes are preferable, but either or both eyes may be merle or china in color without specific penalty. A large, round, full eye seriously detracts from the desired sweet expression. Eye faults are heavily penalized. - AKC Official standard of the Collie

SCOTTISH COLLIE FAQ: WHY REGISTER MODERN COLLIES?

One of the questions we are frequently asked is this: if the Scottish Collie Preservation Society is working to preserve the Collie as it was found in the late 1800s/early 1900s, then why do we have so many modern, kennel-club dogs in our registry? How can we call these dogs Scottish Collies?

There are a few parts to the answer:

Many of the modern, purebred Collies still possess some of the traits found in the original Scottish Collie - after all, they are the same breed; they have simply been bred to refine the physical appearance to follow trends over the past century. While working ability has largely been set aside by the many of Collie breeders to accommodate non working homes, and has therefore been reduced or even lost completely in some lines, the instincts are still alive in many modern Collies. It is these dogs that the SCPS is glad to register, even if their physical appearance is not always 100% on track with the original Scottish Collie - we are always searching for dogs that are intelligent, eager to please but able to think independently, and have the drive to work.

Because modern Collies have been refined over the past century, they possess an easily identifiable and very consistent physical appearance. This makes them invaluable for helping the Scottish Collie retain a distinctly Collie physical type rather than drifting toward an appearance closer to cousin breeds such as the Australian Shepherd, English Shepherd, or Border Collie - which is a risk that comes with having an open registry. This is why Outcross Collies are required to be bred to purebred Scottish Collies, and Appendix Collies are strongly encouraged to be bred to purebred Scottish Collies rather than to other Appendixes.

Finally, no dog is a perfect match to the breed standard. Each incoming dog, whether it is only 75% Collie, or is purebred, is compared to the Scottish Collie breed standard, and must be granted at least 75 out of 100 points by each of the three evaluators. This flexibility of 25 points is designed to allow us to bring in a good range of genetic diversity, and reflects our understanding that while we are all working to breed toward the standard, we are all starting from different positions. Some of our registered Scottish Collies are quite close to the breed standard, while others will need their mates selected very carefully to ensure that the next generation is moving in the right direction.

Conclusion: Every dog in our registry is equally valued, and has much to contribute to the preservation of the original Scottish Collie. We have careful guidelines set in place to ensure that we are always moving closer to the physical type, temperament, and wonderful health that the original breed possessed, and are continually working to educate and advise our breeders as they select mates for their dogs.

When it snows, the hair catches the snow and forms a layer over the cow. This creates an air pocket between the snow and the cow’s skin, which is then warmed by the cow’s natural body temperature of 102 degrees.
