It's approaching a very festive time of year, when there are many gatherings at your home. This article has a great insight to how your pets might feel about this.
Just a gentle reminder that their body systems don't process the holidays like ours do.

Pets should be allowed to meet visitors on their own terms, but they should not be allowed to jump on people, nor should they be forced to interact, though they may be coaxed with treats or toys, says AVMA Immediate Past President Dr. Lori Teller. Nervous pets may try to bolt through open doors as g...

We have had clients over the years that have saved the hair from their dogs' undercoats and spun it into yarn. It was very soft.

Efforts are underway to turn tons of wasted animal hair into fine fabric.

This is not surprising given our last few years dealing with vaccine breakthroughs and COVID.
However, vaccines in dogs and cats is absolutely necessary! We had a puppy just last year that died of distemper, a completely preventable disease.
ParvoVirus has killed thousands of dogs young and old - completely preventable.
Feline Leukemia Virus was rampant in the 70's and 80's killing many cats - vaccine is completely protective.
Rabies in dogs and cats is preventable and this is a human health hazard that can kill humans!

A survey found that 53% of dog owners in the US believe that canine vaccines, including rabies vaccines, are unsafe, ineffective or unnecessary, and nearly 40% have concerns about vaccines causing autism in dogs, researchers reported in the journal Vaccines. An average of 60 to 70 dogs and more than...

Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more of this. Most veterinary hospitals have kept Naloxone (Narcan) in their emergency kits for years.
We had the need to use it this week on a dog that had been for a walk in the neighborhood. Like most dogs, she sniffs and tastes EVERYTHING.
She got a hold of the wrong thing this time, unfortunately it was a combination drug that included an opiod. She has survived with supportive care.
It has been a full week process.
The take away here is that even the sidewalks are not safe. Up to this point what we have seen has been related to public parks.
People discard their drugs anywhere!

A Dogo Argentino in California that had ingested its owner's medication and became unresponsive was resuscitated with the opioid overdose reversal drug Narcan, administered by Marin Humane Officer Chelsea Myers, and recovered. Marin Humane has now instituted training on the administration of Narcan....

Unfortunately, the veterinary profession is seeing much more of this. Most cases involve dogs in public parks.
Humans carelessly discarding drugs/edibles and dogs eating them. Please keep your dogs on leashes and out of the bushes.

Also, now that the ma*****na industry has taken off, people have products at home that are attractive to animals too. Please
put these items out of reach in a sealed container.

Over-the-counter drugs remained the top pet poisons in 2022, while recreational drugs including  co***ne, hallucinogenic mushrooms and ma*****na-based substances were on the Animal Poison Control Center's 2022 list of top 10 pet poisons for the first time. Poisoning related to ma*****na or ingredie...

Pets can get sunburn and skin cancer too!

Exposure to ultraviolet light can cause sunburn and skin cancer in dogs and cats, and people whose pet has a light-colored or thin coat should consider limiting the pets' UV exposure and using a species-specific sunscreen on the pet's ears, belly and tip of the nose, writes Traci Howerton, the volun...

This is very interesting. You enroll yourself and then your cat(s), then the survey will start. It is lengthy but ultimately you will find out more about your cat and help with data gathering on cat behavior.

Attention Cat Parents! Your help with a research project is needed!

James Serpell, Ph.D, Emeritus Professor of Animal Welfare at the University of Pennsylvania School of Vet Med, is working on a study to improve our understanding of the factors contributing to the development of behavioral problems in companion cats.

👉To learn more about the project and to take the survey, click the link:

If you share your home with one or more cats, your participation would be greatly appreciated. Please share this information with other cat parents as well!

You can tell your physician what's wrong with you, but a veterinarian's patients can't verbalize what's wrong. Veterinarians rely on the person attached to the other end of the leash or lead rope to provide information about that animal that can be critical to their assessment of that animal's healt...

Dogs can catch canine influenza by using water or food bowls or playing with toys that have been used by an infected dog, or by simply being near an infected dog that is shedding the virus, says veterinarian Hilary Jones. Since many of us are starting to put up our holiday decorations here are some tips for decorating safely.
I have to share that when my daughter was a toddler we strung Cheerios as a garland and hung it on
our Christmas tree. Our Lab, Larry thought this was a great idea and ate them all! Fortunately,
he did not eat the string they were strung on!

Christmas trees and the decorations on them, small toys, batteries, and guests' bags are among the holiday dangers to pets, says veterinarian Mark Townsend, who adds that pet owners should keep fragile decorations, ribbons, tinsel, electrical cords and plants out of curious pets' reach. Pets should....

Flossie, at the age of almost 27 -- which is the feline equivalent of being 120 human years old, according to Guinness World Records -- has been crowned the world's oldest living cat.

Unfortunately, this is an issue. Our veterinary newsfeed and CDC is warning people to not have contact with their dogs if they have monkeypox or have been in contact with someone who is infected.

A case report in The Lancet confirmed monkeypox in a pet dog in Europe that was allowed to sleep in its owners' bed despite having been isolated from other pets and people as soon as the owners developed monkeypox symptoms. DNA analysis found the virus clade and lineage were the same in the dog and....
