TONIGHT - We cover everything the first frost of the season even though it will be light. The dramatic drop of temp can be quite startling the first time to plants even if they're cols hardy. A layer of row cover will help everything through, especially anything young and tender or anything summer related you wish to extend like winter squash etc. Things that need to be harvested would be like basil or tender fruits.

Top 3 tips for fall gardening
1) Plant now! This is the window for those longer maturity plants like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels, etc. Yes, even while it's still 80+ degrees.
2) Put a timer on that sprinkler! It's still 80 degrees out. Set your timer on those wee baby plants for 2 to 5 mins every HOUR during the heat of the day. Ours starts at 9a and ends at 5p.
3) Nature is slowing down. That means the nitrogen producing microbes in the soil are too. Boost vital nitrogen by mixing in some organic fertilizer like composted chicken pellets or blood meal.
SOURCES: check out our list of local sources to find all these things (including and small package fertilizer, and our favorite timer - it's cheap!)
