How to prevent frostbite ❄

1- remove all water from the coop every evening. This reduces humidity which is a cause of frostbite.

2- block ALL wind from the roosts at night. This is not be confused with blocking ventilation. You need proper ventilation to help keep the coop dry.

3- apply coconut oil to combs and wattles. It is not water based so it will not aid frostbite. It nourishes skin and helps create a kind of wind barrier.

4- consider your flooring. Most substrates such as shavings or hay will hold in moisture which will help aid frostbite. Sand is the perfect substrate because it drains any moisture very well not allowing it to hold in the floor.

5- install flat roosts if you don't have them already. This allows them to cover their toes therefore keeping them warm while sleeping.

6- provide snow free zones for your chickens to walk through. This will help them keep their toes warmer and keep them dry.

Good luck! ❤

Just another chicken keeper who found out the hard way that heat lamps are DANGEROUS!

Please please never use heat lamps for anything! There are safer ways to heat chicks and there is NO reason to have a heat lamp inside your coop. They do not need heat. 💔

Did you know????
There are several uses for wood ash in your coop that are very beneficial to your birds! Here are a few. 👇

1) Using CLEAN wood ash (meaning ash from natural untreated wood) mixed with sand in dust bathing areas is a natural way to keep any parasites off of your birds. The wood ash suffocates lice, mites & fleas.

2) Adding a small briquette of charred clean wood into their waterers helps to purify the water. It also keeps algae and bacteria from forming and growing. In addition, it adds healthy minerals to the water.

3) Adding a very small amount of wood ash (1 tsp per lb) to their layer feed acts as a detoxifier. It also adds extra calcium, phosphorus and magnesium to their diet. Wood ash will help improve lay rates, extend layer periods and reduce the smell of their droppings.

4) Use it as a wound healing agent. Wood ash helps stop bleeding as well as keep infection from forming when applied topically.

5) Sprinkle wood ash inside your coop and run to reduce the ammonia in their droppings. Like baking soda, wood ash is alkaline which absords & neutralizes odor. It also lowers humidity inside your coop.

* ALWAYS use ash from clean wood. No chemically treated wood, painted or stained wood, pressure treated, charcoal briquettes or slow burning logs from the store.

Easy sour crop cure!

Cut store brand Monistat ovules into thirds. Feed a piece to the bird twice a day for 3 days. Massage the crop for 5 minutes when you administer. After 2-3 days, it's cured! You don't have to separate or restrict food.

We have been doing this for years and it has ALWAYS worked! ❤

Roosting bars should always be flat with rounded corners for safety. Here's why.

Flat roost- They have much better balance.
Round roost- They have to work harder to balance and get less sleep because of it.

Flat roost- Their toes are fully covered when the hen lays down and prevents frostbite on their toes during winter months.
Round roosts- Their toes are exposed and at risk of frostbite during winter months.

PVC is especially bad because it is slick. They will literally spend most of their night just trying not to fall off.

I have also seen 2x4 mounted upward. 2 inches is not enough space for them to cover their toes properly and protect them.

If given the choice, your birds will choose flat every single time. Seriously, they have done studies on what chickens prefer. 😘

We touched on worming and parasites in here earlier. Here is a quick tutorial on how to prevent and to rid your birds of lice, mites, fleas and several types of worms.

For prevention: do this every 3-4 months
For an investation: do this once, then again in 10 days

Alternate between Safeguard & Ivermectin to combat any resistance.

Tonight was Ivermectin day! 20 minutes & ALL were done!

Best part? ZERO egg withdrawal with both methods and happy chooks! 🙌

Sanitizing day!!!!

It's important to practice good biosecurity by sanitizing ALL waterers, feeders & tools regularly.

This cuts down on biofilm in the waterers which is nasty stuff! It also keeps illnesses from being spread around the flock. Especially if you have outside waterers & feeders that wild birds can get into. They will spread respiratory illnesses, canker, Avian flu, salmonella, E. coli and a few others to your birds.

We sanitize every month and it's EASY.

Items needed:
Large Rubbermaid tub
Scrub brush
Antibacterial Dawn
Bleach

Take apart all of the equipment, then give them a light rinse with water. Toss them in the Rubbermaid tub, add 2 cups of bleach and fill completely with water. Let it all soak for 30 minutes, then take out each piece and scrub with antibacterial Dawn. Rinse and let dry. That's it!

DIY seed sprouting 🌱

I've been doing this for YEARS! Sprouts are a HUGE favorite for chickens and you can sprout these babies super easy at home!

Why sprouts?
During the sprouting process, enzymes within the seeds are activated and enhanced even more than the dried seed or even the grown plant. Studies show that a seed sprout contains up to 4,000 times the enzymes and antioxidants than the unsprouted seed! They also have more protein, vitamins, minerals and fiber than an unsprouted seed. Also, the proteins in a sprout are easier to digest. Essentially, the sprout stage is the healthiest stage to ever consume that item. Even better than fodder because once the stalks shoot up they loose 75% of their nutrients. A plus? These nutrients spread to the eggs which means you will be eating some of the healthiest eggs EVER!

Best organic seeds to sprout for chickens:
Lentils
Broccoli
Alfalfa
Mung bean
Clover
Sunflower

Items needed:
Organic Seeds (country creek acres are best)
Quart mason jars with lids
Shelf liner
Knee highs

How to sprout at home:
Place 1/4 cup of seeds into a quart jar. Cover seeds with 3-4 inches of water and leave overnight to soak. In the mean time, take the circles out of the lids & use it to cut shelf liners to size. Then place the cut shelf liners inside the ring and close. (See pic for reference) If the seeds are tiny, use the knee high instead of the liner, place it over the open jar and screw the lid onto it. Place them in your window sill or table by a window to catch sun. DO NOT put them in direct sunlight. Every morning and every evening before bed, rinse & shake the seeds, then drain through the lid. Place them back in the window. After 5 days, you have perfect sprouts to feed to your chickens!

*Do not leave the seeds unrinsed for more than 10 hours otherwise mold will begin to grow.

* Feed as a treat once or twice a day.

*NEVER feed unsprouted seeds or beans to chickens. They are TOXIC to them in this form!

Did you know?

You can hypnotize a chicken! 😳

This is called "tonic immobility" and though we aren't entirely sure how it works, we do know it is an involuntary response by the chicken who's brain is telling them to freeze.

Pretty cool and completely safe. No harm was done to miss Mabel. 😘💯
