Dear Clients,

Our team wanted to reach out with an exciting announcement regarding the changes ahead for Woodhaven Animal Health. To start off we are very pleased to inform you that Dr. Jennifer Staus is our new full-time lead veterinarian as of June 17th, 2024.

Dr. Status has been a part-time employee since 2007 and has accepted the full-time lead role. Dr. Riebe will be able to reduce her hours to part-time, working an average of two days per week. We expect this to be a very smooth transition as Dr. Status’ commitment to patient care, clients, and staff is similar to that of Dr. Riebe.

On occasion, you may also see Dr. Sarah Novak at our clinic. She has been a wonderful support to us since the fall of 2023, and we hope to see more of her in the future as her schedule allows.

With these new changes, we are very grateful that our entire support staff will remain in place: Lisa, Jamie, and Kaity as our Certified Veterinary Technicians. Lake and Brenna as veterinary assistants, and Mary and Shanna as receptionists.

Despite our efforts to make the best use of our time and talents, we are still left with the unfortunate reality that we are not able to give immediate medical attention to every client that calls on a given day. Sadly, every clinic is facing the same challenge of not having enough personnel and hours in a day. We know that this has caused frustrations for you and us. We appreciate your understanding when we cannot meet those needs on short notice and we also deeply sympathize with your pet’s need for help.

If you know a veterinarian currently searching for a new position, let them know that we are eager to add more members to our team to increase the number of patients we can provide care to. With our current staff in place, we will begin to recruit aspiring veterinarians from the universities heavily, allowing Dr. Status, Dr. Riebe, and Dr. Novak to act as mentors. We are optimistic that this will allow us to expand over time.

We are also hopeful that we will be able to accept new clients again very shortly! It has been extremely difficult to turn away pet parents who are new to the area, have brought new pets into their homes, or were simply looking to transfer to our clinic based on recommendations from an established client.

On behalf of the entire staff, we wish to thank you, our amazing clients! You have supported us since we opened our doors in 2001. You and your beloved pets are the reason we do what we do and the reason we show up each and every day! While we may have needed to adapt to the new way of veterinary medicine, we are still committed to the goal of maintaining or improving the quality of life for every patient who enters our facility. Here's to the future of continued care and continued growth!

We are pleased to know that our future is secure as we welcome Dr. Jennifer Staus to the role of lead veterinarian at Woodhaven Animal Health!

Keeping your pet hydrated is a crucial component to their overall well-being. Symptoms of dehydration could include reduced energy, lethargy, loss of appetite, dry gums, heavy panting, vomiting, constipation or hard stools, and decreased skin elasticity.

There are several ways to keep your pets hydrated even on the hottest of days.
- Always provide fresh water access
- Try a different bowl type. Some pets prefer recirculated water fountains.
- Limit outside time and exercise on hot days
- Create your own homemade frozen treats!
Recipe: Seedless Watermelon Popsicles (watermelon has high water content!)
Ingredients: 3/4 cup of plain Greek yogurt and 2 cups of seedless watermelon,
diced into small pieces.
Directions: Use a blender to puree the watermelon, then pour the contents into a popsicle mold (an ice-cube tray works well too). Then layer the watermelon puree with a spoonful of yogurt on top. Freeze until solid.

If you have any favorite pet-friendly recipes that help keep your pet cool, please share them in the comments!

Happy Friday & National Dog Party Day!

This holiday was created to support humans and dogs getting out of the house and safely socializing with other people and pets. Ways to celebrate this holiday would be going for a walk or car ride with your pet. If your dog tends to be more of a homebody or does not get along with other pets, that's ok! You can still have a lot of fun together by trying out a new game or toy. Or if your pet prefers couch time, a day spent lounging together is another great way to celebrate.

June is Adopt-a-Cat Month! We celebrate this in June as it typically coincides with the influx of new kittens that are being born this time of year.

When adopting a cat it is important to learn cat-friendly preparations not only for your new furry friend but for your home. Providing a safe place, enrichment, and proper food and water are just a couple crucial elements when adopting a new pet.

Reach out to your local humane society for more information on adopting.

May is Allergy and Asthma Awareness month as it is peak season for not only ourselves, but for our pets to develop symptoms for both conditions. If you have been noticing any unusual coughing, sneezing, excessive itchiness, difficulty breathing or wheezing, it may be due to allergies or asthma.

People who experience allergies are often sneezing, congested, and can have watery eyes. Dogs and cats can experience similar symptoms but more frequently their skin can become very itchy. Some will lick and scratch areas of their body excessively which can cause further problems, such as overly irritated skin and possible skin infections.

If you believe that your pet is suffering from asthma and/or allergies please contact our clinic at (715)341-9664 to schedule an exam.

Did you know that adult deer ticks can be active in temperatures of 35°F and above?

Due to our warmer temperatures and lack of snow, there is a very good chance that you may find a tick on your pet already this year. If your pet is spending time outdoors then it is recommended that you regularly check them for ticks, especially if you live in an area where they are commonly found.
(Examples: wooded areas, grassy areas, shrubs and bushes)

Ticks can be found anywhere on your pets body so it is important to check them over thoroughly, including between their toes, under their collars, in their armpits and groin area. These parasites can transmit tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis. You can help your pet avoid these diseases by adding a preventative to your monthly routine. Flea and tick preventatives for dogs and cats come in multiple forms such as chewable tablets, repelling collars, or topical solutions.

Avoiding an illness by adding in a preventative is a great way to ensure that your pet is protected.
If you would like to learn more about the different brands of flea and tick preventatives please contact our clinic at (715)341-9664 or check out our online pharmacy Covetrus.

Happy National Pet Dental Health month, at this time we have several openings available for dental procedures, please contact our clinic for scheduling.

The key to help manage oral care in our pets is taking multiple preventative steps. It is important to practice oral health care at home to help prevent dental disease. Just like in humans, it is recommended to brush your pet's teeth daily with a suitable toothpaste made for dogs or cats. Most pets tolerate the brushing of their teeth very well, however there are other dental care alternatives that can be used if your pet is resistant to brushing.
- Dental wipes
- Dental chews and treats
- Oral rinses and water additives

Dental procedures under anesthesia are also another great option to help prevent and manage dental disease. Along with brushing your pet's teeth and/or using alternative products, regular dental procedures are recommended and have multiple benefits such as:
- Cleaning and scaling of plaque and tartar
- Dental radiographs to monitor teeth and gum health
- Thorough dental exam
- Possible early detection of oral health concerns
- Prevents worsening of possible dental disease
- Helps prevent tooth loss, oral pain, and bad breath

If you would like your pet to benefit from a dental procedure, please contact our clinic at (715)341-9664 to schedule. We would be more than happy to discuss any questions or concerns and can go over in detail what our dental procedures entail as well. At this time we do have multiple dental openings, however we do recommend scheduling in advance as the schedule books out fast.
