During an extensive dental procedure involving a severe dental disease case, the two carnassial teeth ( fourth premolars) were barely hanging on by a string to what was left of the compromised gingiva and recessed bone leaving us with two fully intact, 3 rooted teeth. Did you know only 30% of the a tooth is visible while the other 70% of the tooth consists of roots that sit tucked tightly under the gums? Routine dental cleanings including dental X-rays are very important for properly checking the integrity of all the teeth as many problems can hide quietly under the gums 🤫

An 8 month old Sapsali was brought in for an exam with the concern of “trouble eating” where the radiographs revealed a case of Craniomandibular Osteopathy. Also known as “Lions Jaw” this diagnosis is most commonly seen is West Highland Terriers which is a hereditary disease that usually becomes noticeable around 4 to 8 months of age and is usually self limiting.

Check out the size of this retained deciduous canine that was extracted from a seven month old pup today. Notice the color change, the white portion of the tooth is visible to the naked eye where the majority of the tooth consist of the hidden root which is only visible by dental X-ray! That is why proper anesthetic dentals are so important for our patients dental health. It is not just about removing plaque from the visible tooth surface but also examining the tooth thoroughly via dental X-ray.
