Why do cats have whiskers?

Whiskers are hairs that are twice as thick as the normal hairs on the cat's body and sit three times as deep under their skin. They have approximately 24 located on their cheeks, but whiskers can also be found above the eyes and on the back of the forelegs!

The base of each whisker is packed with nerve endings that convey large amounts of information about the cat’s surroundings, making for a highly sensitive built-in navigational system.

Whiskers help a cat work out where objects are in relation to their head and legs, to help them judge spaces and negotiate their environment. This can be through touch, but whiskers also detect air pressure and air currents which can help cats figure out the location of objects even if they’ve lost sight of them.

You may have noticed a whisker or two that has fallen out around the home, but this is a perfectly regular body process and nothing to worry about!

🌟 Did you know? 🌟 Even if your cat stays indoors, they can still be at risk for heartworm disease! 🐱❤️🦟
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms transmitted by mosquitoes. Here’s why you should be concerned:
▪️Mosquitoes Get Inside: It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to transmit heartworm larvae to your cat.
▪️No Place is Safe: Windows, doors, and even dogs can provide a way for mosquitoes to get inside.
▪️Invisible Risk: Cats often show no symptoms until the disease is advanced, making it harder to detect and treat.
▪️Prevention is Key! Consult your vet about heartworm prevention to keep your indoor kitty safe and healthy. 🐾💕

Cats should generally get no more than 10% of their daily caloric intake from treats. The exact number of calories a cat needs per day varies based on their size, age, and activity level, but a typical adult cat requires around 200-250 calories per day. Therefore, treats should provide no more than 20-25 calories daily. What is your cat's favorite treat? 🍩

Cats rely on their sense of smell to assess their environment. Your cat will mark their territory by rubbing their face and body, leaving pheromones to create a sense of security. Learn more about creating a secure environment for your cat at https://bit.ly/2RFmBT7.

Did you know that just like us, kittens have baby teeth? There are 26 in total and the very small teeth in the front, the incisors, are the first to grow through at around 2 to 4 weeks of age. The premolars are the next to come through at 5 to 6 weeks of age and are used for cutting through the meat and bone. 🦷

Permanent adult teeth usually begin to grow through at around 4 to 7 months of age, and there are 30 in total. The baby teeth will start to fall out naturally, often whilst the cat is eating, but they might also be swallowed. You might find them around your home on the floor or in the cat’s bedding. This is perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about.

Sometimes, the baby teeth don’t fall out and make the angle of an adult tooth grow abnormally, resulting in permanent misalignment. We recommend regular oral exams by your vet at their kitten health checks.
