Dogs2DogTags

Dogs2DogTags Our primary goal is to provide military veterans a loving, canine companion. We are committed to standing by our veterans, and keeping them aware that we care.

What We Do

We create opportunities to save at risk dogs, train them, and place them with deserving service members who have been diagnosed with post-combat stress and anxiety. There is no out of pocket cost for the veteran to receive a trained dog, and they gain a constant companion to help them cope with the unique challenges of their everyday life. Who We Are

We are a group of men and women wh

o have either served in or worked closely with our military. We’ve seen the difficulties that our men and women face when returning to civilian life, and we’ve known men and women who have tragically contributed to the unprecedented rate of veteran suicides. Torre’s Story

The idea for Dogs2DogTags came to Torre Willadsen when he was deployed as a civilian contractor working with military dogs in 2012. During his time with the 7th Marines, he developed close bonds with dogs and dog handlers alike, and when dog handler Chris Van Etten was wounded, Torre worked hard to help keep Chris and his dog Harley together during Chris’ recovery. Torre suspected—and then saw firsthand—the profound effect a canine companion could have on a wounded man’s frame of mind at a difficult time. And that’s when Torre knew that he wanted to bring that kind of unconditional support to those back home struggling with post-traumatic stress. Staff:

Dog tip Wednesday!
Puppies are generally accepting of the transition easier and require less of a decompression period. They love the attention and bonding with the family comes easily. They will appreciate controlled safe space to explore but will also need a quiet space they can call their own for puppy decompression time where they can feel safe. Generally, within 3 days they will be confident in their new surroundings and will follow you, explore, play with toys, and get into mischief as puppies will always do. Do not assume this will be the case for an older dog from a rescue, Humane Society, or private adoption. These usually are much different situations. There are things you will need to take into consideration, we will expand on some for you weekly for the next few weeks!

So, you are getting a puppy.🐾

* Find a safe space for a bed, crate, toys, food. Make sure you prepare using the full-grown size of your dog if you are adopting a puppy. Have a crate they can grow into.

* Have a bed for them to relax in the family living area.

* Have something comfortable in the crate (puppies will likely destroy this a few times).

* Never use a Flexi Leash, they are dangerous for dogs for all ages.

* We always use a Kong made product for the size of the dog.

* We recommend always using hard bovine bones for our dogs. Discard any bone
when it is chewed down to an unsafe size. Never use bones with knuckles. They
are a high choking hazard for dogs of all ages.

* Find a consistent place for the feeding station. This area should be as out of the
way of traffic as possible. We use stainless steel bowls for easy cleaning and
longevity. food. Dogs should always have access to clean water. Puppies will
need to release almost immediately after drinking.

* Having a routine is essential for any dog. Set times for everything. Always try to
feed at the same time every day. This will build a great routine for everyone.

* Rest time after eating is especially important for large breeds. No heavy play or
activities for an hour to let the food settle a bit to prevent serious medical
conditions such as bloat or twisted stomach.

We are so proud of Thomas and his young Belgian Tervuren, Tag. This breed is known for being high-drive, intelligent, and thoughtful, and Tag was quite timid at 8 weeks old. Thomas has dedicated so much time and effort to building Tag's confidence. It's amazing to see the progress they've made in distance obedience with distractions – Tag has come such a long way from being scared of his own shadow to confidently navigating a challenging course with distractions!⭐️

🎉Welcome to the family, Rookie, Bella, and Lexie!🐾

Rookie and Bella have recently joined our training program, while Lexie has already progressed through evaluation and puppy classes. Both Bella and Rookie are our newest rescue pups to join the team. Lexie is turning one soon and shows great potential for early 26 testing.

Rookie, at three years old, is brand new but has fit in remarkably well on his first day. Bella, on the other hand, is shy and not yet environmentally confident. She will need lots of patience and support to become comfortable in her new surroundings.

A reminder to anyone raising a puppy or adopting an older rescue animal: it's crucial to expose your animal to a variety of environments as much as possible. Environmental stability and stimulation are key to building a confident dog. You truly cannot do too much in this regard.
