MANGE: It's Not What You Think

Many people think Mange occurs when a dog is not properly bathed. The truth however is that Mange is caused by mites.
The term Mange is derived from a French word mangeue, which translates into “to eat or itch.” Mange, caused by different kinds of mites, affects many kinds of animals and can affect humans as well.
In dogs, there are two major forms of mange, each caused by different mites. Sarcoptic mange (also known as scabies) and Demodectic mange (also known as red mange or demodex).

Sarcoptic Mange
Also known as canine scabies, this disease is caused by a circular-shaped, eight-legged mite called the Sarcoptes scabiei. This form of mange is highly contagious. The parasite can be transmitted from dog to dog and can pass from dogs to humans, although it doesn’t thrive on non-canine hosts. Female mites burrow into the skin to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch in about three weeks, and the young feed on the host’s skin.

Demodectic Mange
Demodectic mange, or demodex, is caused by a cigar-shaped mite, Demodex canis. The difference from sarcoptic mange is that these are a normal part of the skin flora, always present, and usually harmless. They are passed to pups from their mothers in the first few days after birth, but it is not contagious to humans. The mites take up residence deep in hair follicles and stay there, causing no trouble. A normal immune system keeps their numbers in check. But in a dog with a weakened immune system, they can grow out of control.

Tick Borne Diseases on Pets

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, ticks can infect humans and pets with over a dozen types of bacterial illnesses, two of the most common being Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease.

Incidence of both Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease are increasing across the United States. Both these illnesses present with similar symptoms, including fever, headache, fatigue, and tick paralysis. The last of these is not caused by the bacteria, but by a neurotoxin in the tick’s saliva.

Symptoms of tick paralysis include tingling and numbness all over the body and can sometimes result in severe respiratory distress. Paralysis is more familiar with Rocky Mountain spotted fever than Lyme disease.

Mutts are known by many names – mixed-breeds, crossbreeds, hybrids, Heinz 57s, mongrels, half-breeds – but these lovable mixes often make wonderful additions to the family.

While purebreds in shelters are often adopted quickly, mixed breed dogs battle the stigma of being the less appealing dog, often remaining in shelters longer. Their amazing characteristics often go unnoticed, with many individuals and families unaware of the positive attributes a mix of dog breeds can create.

Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?

As pet parents, we know there are certain human foods that are good for dogs, like sweet potatoes and eggs, and there are foods they can’t eat, like grapes and mushrooms. So where does ice cream stand in the dog diet?

Ice cream can contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs, such as chocolate, caffeine, and xylitol. It can also cause stomach upset, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Can dogs eat vanilla ice cream?”
After all, what’s the harm in plain vanilla? Well, even though the milk in ice cream is considered a wholesome food for many humans, dogs generally don’t tolerate dairy products well.

Most dogs do not have the enzymes necessary to digest lactose, Enzymes are critical for many metabolic functions, and without the enzymes needed to break down dairy, your pup could have a rumbly, painful tummy ache—or worse—after eating ice cream.
