Jenkinson’s Aquarium is a privately owned facility located on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. Opening in June of 1991, Jenkinson’s Aquarium has proven to be a valuable educational and recreational resource, as evidenced by its growing popularity. The aquarium is dedicated to educating the public on all aspects of marine life and conservation. Each exhibit is designed to promote awarenes

s of the animals, their habitats and conservation. Exhibits such as Atlantic sharks, Pacific sharks, coral reefs, penguins, and seals give you the opportunity to get up close to animals from around the globe. Another attraction, the touch tank, allows visitors to touch live animals ranging from a sea star to a sting ray! In addition to the educational exhibits, the aquarium offers workshops for children of all ages, as well as professional development workshops for teachers and group tours for schools and scout groups. Groups are provided a general tour of the building and can choose between a number of Focus Programs that will highlight a chosen topic. If your group is unable to make it to the aquarium, we can come to you through our Outreach Program. If you are looking for somewhere special to have your child’s birthday party, the aquarium is just the place. We offer a Perky the Penguin Birthday Party for children turning four years or older. The aquarium is also available for evening functions such as wedding receptions, corporate parties or business meetings. For those who wish to volunteer their time, Jenkinson’s Aquarium has an extensive volunteer program for those over the age of sixteen. The aquarium staff, including volunteers, participate in many community programs including Adopt-a-Highway and NJ Community Water Watch. Either in the community or at the aquarium, our staff will greet you in a courteous and professional manner. The staff is on hand to answer any of your questions while visiting, making it an enjoyable and educational experience. On your way out, you can take the fun home with you after browsing through our aquarium Gift Shop which has an extensive selection of marine related products. Jenkinson's Aquarium is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). AZA is America’s leading accrediting organization for zoos and aquariums, and accredits only those institutions that have achieved rigorous, professional standards for animal welfare and management, veterinary care, wildlife conservation and research, education, safety, staffing, and more. The aquarium is open all year for your convenience, closing only on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The African Penguin has been uplisted to Critically Endangered by the IUCN, with breeding pairs now under 10,000. With a shocking 97% population decline, these beloved seabirds face extinction in less than 4,000 days without urgent action.

What is driving the decline?
Faced with numerous threats, a primary cause of the African Penguin’s decline is a lack of available food due to climate change, made worse by competition from commercial fishing around its breeding colonies, which impacts the species’ survival and breeding success. While there are existing no-take zones where commercial fishing is prohibited to help the penguins better access the fish they feed on, primarily sardines and anchovies, research by seabird scientists has demonstrated that these zones are currently inadequate for penguin conservation.

Nicky Stander, Head of Conservation, SANCCOB said “Seeing a 97% loss in African Penguin populations is devastating and knowing they are now officially ‘Critically Endangered’ is a sobering thought. In just over a decade, they could no longer exist, which not only has an impact on our marine ecosystem, but also on South Africa’s economy and ecotourism. These animals are a key indicator of the wider ecological health of our ocean and are beloved worldwide. We cannot wait any longer for change.”

Natalie Maskell, CEO, SANCCOB said “The IUCN uplisting to Critically Endangered means that the African Penguins are just one step away from becoming extinct in the wild. SANCCOB will continue to fight for the future of this iconic species; we must remain optimistic that their trajectory can be reversed."

🔵 Sensory Saturday tomorrow (10/26)🔵

Guests with autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing or cognitive challenges, as well as guests requiring assistance for disabilities are invited to explore the aquarium before we open to the public. To create a sensory friendly environment there will be a decreased noise level, limited visual stimulation and less crowding. General admission applies.

❄️It may have been a snow day for us, but we still took a moment to celebrate Zuko's 3rd birthday!🎂 🐧Zuko, our African penguin, had a lovely time watching the snow falling on the boardwalk. Since he's an African penguin, his species wouldn't experience snow in the wild. It usually doesn't get below 50°F on the beaches of South Africa where they live. #DYK sharks can reproduce three different ways?! 🤯 🦈Some sharks, like our whitespotted bamboo shark in the video, are oviparous meaning they eggs. They'll attached their eggs to rocks, coral, or sea grasses. It then takes the babies 14-15 weeks to develop and hatch out. 🦈Other sharks will keep they're eggs inside as they develop and hatch within the female.
