Gambler returned Sunday night from another successful canyon trip. Good action on 30 to 60lb yellows and longfin. During the day, some guys dropped and reeled for a good mess of 4 to 8lb tilefish. After tomorrows 36hr trip, we will sail weekly on Mondays to the canyons. It looks like the action will hold up through November --The only thing that will keep us in on Mondays would be a poor weather report.

Gambler returned from a good canyon trip last night. Great diversity of Canyon creatures.

During the night, we released a small sword, caught a couple yellowfin and wrestled with a 200lb mako (released of course) and a 200lb blue shark.

Just before dawn, the tuna bite took over. 50lb class yellowfin with a few bigger and smaller in the mix. A couple of 40lb longfin were caught before the sun came up. Most were taken on butterfish or sardine baits, a few were caught on jigs. We also fought a big white marlin, close to 100lbs, to the boat.

It's great to see some of the more experienced tuna fishermen help the newer guys catch a fish. --Tim V caught his limit early, then proceeded to help some first timers hook and land their first tunas. The comradery on board is what makes party boat fishing unique!

A terrific combination of weather, fish frenzy and happy fishermen --and women.

Gambler was on her way again at noon. Will return by 6PM tomorrow

10/12-10/13 24 HOUR REPORT (there must have been in error in posting and I just saw it never went up, sorry y’all!)

Gambler returned from a 24 hour tuna trip yesterday. We had moved our Saturday trip up by 7 hours (to leave at noon) in order to beat the wind forecast.

On our way to the canyon, we saw whales and slicks and birds on the flats again. Setting up on our drift around 3PM, we caught a 30lb yellow on a jig within 10 mins. The fishing was pretty good until sunset. About 2/3rds were taken on jigs. No bluefin this time. Yellowfin mostly between 25 and 50lbs with a few bigger. The speedsters were feeding on big sandeels.

Like last time, the bite turned off by dusk. So Gambler headed to the canyon wall for the night/morning bite. I had gotten a report from another boat that had good action there the night before. I found a beautiful break of 75f and anchored in 680ft at the edge. It was a very nice night --but the fish didn't come into the slick. Our guys caught a handful a mahi during in the dark. Other boats within a 5 mile stretch from us had caught 0 to 6 fish during the same time period.

Near day break, we headed back in and hooked into a few more yellowfin along with a 100+ lb bigeye.

Good trip overall with some really fun guys

Make sure to bring a jigging rod --and a jig that looks like a sandeel 5 to 10 ounces. Most tuna were jigged at 100ft the last 2 trips but a few were near bottom.

10/16-10/17 36 HOUR REPORT- Curtesy of our loyal long time friend, Chuck Eaton.

Bob headed for the flats and Bluefin water, about a 3 hr. ride. With a short look-around, we started a quick 1.5 kt. drift in 71* water. After 2 hrs. with only a jigged Skippy and Sea robin we headed for another 1.5-2 hr. ride to the Hudson which turned into a 4.5 hr. ride to the Toms and set up a drift in 73* blue water (61* at the Hudson). During the afternoon, a run-off with a parted line and a 10' run-off with a bare hook coming in. At some point a hooked BIG blue shark brought to the boat before biting off. After dark we anchored, later discovered a pot marker 300-400' off the port side and caught one larger 12 # Mahi and 25 chickens during the night. That pot was loaded with them. We had to move 3 times as the distance between us and it became dangerous. First tuna came in @ 3 AM, next one @ 5. One more was jigged and two more on bait. We called it quits @ 8 AM and were on our way back by 8:30. Took us 8 hrs. to the dock.
Seas built steadily to some honest 8-10' stacked swells. A couple broke as waves almost as high as the scuppers burying a foot of my rod tip which was pointed down to keep line off the hull. Wind had built to at least 30 kt. awhile before we left. Oh yea, another BIG blue dog showed up. Bob said he'd stop back at the flats if things improved inshore. They hadn't so dockward we went.
5 Yellowfin in the 50-60 lb. class. 25 Mahi.
This year is quickly becoming one of the worst, weather-wise, in years. Hopefully, it'll end better and more fruitfully--Longfin would be nice! I could live with that...

On our way off to the canyon in nice weather Weds, we saw large pods of whales feeding on the flats. No other boats were around. We set up to drift through the whale show (I'll never get tired of that). We started catching big yellowfin, mostly 70 to 90lb class, with a few smaller. We also landed a pair of 120lb bluefin and a few mahi.

As the sun began to set, the action abated, so I anchored Gambler in 630ft on the canyon wall. Shortly after dark, the breeze stiffened and the rock and roll began. Not much action at all in the dark and the early morning bite didn't happen, so we picked up by 7AM and headed back to the previous day's spot. I saw a few whales but nothing like the day before. It took a little while but we started hook-up on big yellowfin again, landing a few more. We broke off a few big ones, too.

Great trip with a great group of guys.

Headed back out again tomorrow. Changed our time slot to avoid the worst of the wind.

24 Hour Weekend Report:

Gambler had good trip, Sat/Sun on the tuna grounds. Shortly after we set up our Drift, Edwin hooked and landed a 125lb swordfish. 30 minutes later, he boated his twin. He was not targeting swordfish, the predators grabbed his regular butterfish bait with a 3 ounce weight.

Shortly after the swords came in, we got blasted by 40 to 70 lb yellowfin. The action was very good from 3AM till daylight and then we still picked away until about 8am. Besides the yellowfin, the anglers took 3 nice longfin and some mahi that swam through the slick throughout the trip. As we drifted in 700ft, Edwin dropped down for tile and hooked up almost every time on 8 to 10lbers. It was a great trip.

Our next trip leaves tomorrow morning.

Most of our trips are booked but openings come available at times and it's always a good idea to check with our office.

Gambler returned from a 36hour canyon trip Thursday night.

It was a rough ride headed off Weds night. It took longer than forecasted to settle down some. Before we arrived at the canyon wall, about 15 miles inshore of it, I saw an acre or more of skippys working the churned surface. The Gambler drifted through the slicky area at 2 knots. We hooked up a few skipjacks on jigs and we had two lures quickly sliced off by what I suspect were wahoo.

After that, we approached the canyon and settled in 600 feet in 70°f sst. It looked promising as we came tight on the anchor and had a few more bites on jigs. Hoping for a dusk bite that didn't happen, we held on in the roll till midnight with no bites.

With the guys losing stamina and getting bleary-eyed, we pulled anchor and searched further out. But the sst dropped to 68f on that course and I decided to head back to where we had seen the most life and hope for a early morning flurry.

The seas finally began to abate by 3AM. We had a few run-offs and missed bites between 4AM and 8.

But with no more fish landed, we pulled anchor and began to work mahi structure. I reminded the guys and gal that tuna are often just below the mahi and that an 8oz jig worked at 100ft is always a good idea.

On the first set we tried, Juan did just that and was rewarded with a 25lb yellowfin, as the rest of the boat worked a bunch of mixed size mahi over the rails. There were some bull dolphin mixed in with the 4 to 8lbers. Darren caught a 20+ lber on the first set.

On the second set we boated a 50lb yellowfin. Mahi action was good for the rest of the trip and we loaded the boxes with them.

After daybreak the seas became very nice. It was like a different ocean.

Not what we had hoped for as far as a tuna catch, but we went home with a nice catch of mahi.

Headed out again on back-to-back 24s this weekend.

A few dates have spots that just recently opened up. Best to call the office at 732-295-7569 if you are interested.

Gambler was out yesterday on our exotics trip. On these trips, we target mahi, bonito, little tunny, jacks and other pelagics.

The ocean was a bit too sporty to head for the pots offshore, so we went about 20 miles to the ESE and fished an under-sea ridge. We anchored up just before sunrise. Within 15 minutes, a fish ran with a baited spearing and we landed a bonito. The first hour was fast fishing on small to medium bonitos and tunnys. Once the sun came up, the fish became a little line shy but the jig-bite turned on. Anything that looked like a sandeel worked well, as long as the operator fished it right. A few times, the bons and albs would back off for a few minutes but then would start to chew again.

It was very lifey. Besides bonito and tunnys (albs), we saw small blues, mackerel, fluke, sea bass, porgies and sea robins. Must be a lot of baitfish holding there.

We will be fishing entirely offshore this month, weather permitting. Most of the offshore trips have been booked but there are still some openings in November, where we will run one 24 per week. Last year, Gambler did well at the canyons in November.

09/25/2024

Gambler fares had some nice sized fluke on our last few trips. A few 5s, couple 6s, a 7+ and an 8+lber came in on our final trip on the 14th. Since then, we've been getting beat by the weather.

We are supposed to be on our way offshore right now but I reluctantly canceled due to Easterly winds and seas up to 8ft.

The crew and I are a bit discouraged --it's been a long stretch-- but, hopefully, this weekend will break the chain and will come back with a boatful of tunas.

Most of our canyon trips are booked but we still have some openings in November. Last year we had some great trips in November.

Looking to put up a report after the weekend

Fluke action was disappointing the last couple days. We caught some fish but not what it should be. Hopefully it will bounce back next day or two.

After Labor day, the Gambler will switch from half-day fluke to 3/4 day fluke, 8AM returning 2:30PM. Check up website for pricing and details.

After September 22nd, the Gambler will be full time offshore fishing for tunas, mahi and other pelagics. A few of these trips still have room. Check out our site.

Our night trips have seen good fishing. On Thursday nights, we are targeting ling, sea bass and squid. Friday and Saturday nights have been angling more towards bluefish. This past week was steady action on all 3 nights. The blues are mixed sizes from 2 to 8lbs.

Due to high winds we have canceled our THURSDAY night trip but we are eager to get out on FRIDAY and SATURDAY from 7:30-12:30!

Gambler has had good fluke action most trips recently. Jig fishermen and bait draggers are both catching fish. Getting some limits on both the morning and afternoon trips. A good percentage of keepers netted with pool winners between 5 and 6lbs. Not as many sea bass or ling now but we are seeing occasional bonito, spainish mackerel, bluefish and mahi.

Fishing had been slow earlier this week but picked up yesterday afternoon and today was pretty good. Not a lot of diversity but nice fluke action with a decent amount of keepers. Just a few keeper sea bass in the mix today. Long range weather forecast is good.

Our exciting night trips will be going tonight, Friday night and Saturday night: Possible catches: Ling, Bluefish, Sea bass, Squid and other exotics as the water is lit up by our powerful underwater lights.

Gambler has been catching a lot of variety lately. Besides fluke and sea bass, we are catching ling, small blues, big mackerel, mahi-mahi, sea robins other types of fish.

Action has been good most days. You have to pay attention to get the keepers. Joe caught his limit again today. When he noticed that the rental rods were catching on traditional fluke rig and spearing squid combo, he switched out his jig/gulp and started catching more fish. I see this a lot when the water temps are cool on the bottom. Some of our regulars would rather fight than switch --but don't be stubborn-- be ready and willing to adapt.

I am hearing concerns about sea conditions this weekend but it looks like that storm is far offshore. We will have a ground swell but the sets will be far apart.

Gambler is headed out night fishing tonight, tomorrow and Saturday from 7:30 till 12:30.
