We are grieving the loss of our dear friend and veteran brother, Major James "Jim" Allen USMC. Jim was a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam war. He was a recipient of 20 combat medals, including a Silver Star and Flying Cross. He saved many lives during that war. He was a true hero. Jim was a quiet and humble man, never talking about his experience in the war.
Jim was a true dog lover and served many years on the Board of Directors for the Michigan War Dog Memorial. He served many times on the honor guard as we laid to rest a military K9 hero at the memorial. Major Allen will be surely missed. May he Rest in Peace at the right hand of God.

We at Service Dog United care about your interactions with your dog! Your furry friend only understands what it’s taught, and how it’s taught is the biggest part. Respect, obedience, and leadership are not synonymous. Take it from me, it’s harder to deal with a disrespectful dog than it is to set some boundaries, and educate your pup. Let’s get to work!

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to incorporate obedience and leadership training into your daily interactions with your dog:

1. Start with obedience training: Dedicate a specific time each day to work on obedience commands and tricks with your dog. This could be 10-15 minutes of focused training where you teach them basic commands like sit, stay, lie down, and come. Use positive reinforcement techniques such as treats and praise to reward their good behavior.

2. Set boundaries and establish rules: Outside of dedicated training time, it's important to establish boundaries and rules for your dog. This could include not allowing them on furniture, not jumping on guests, or not begging for food at the table. Consistency is key here, so make sure everyone in the household is on the same page and enforces the rules consistently.

3. Provide structure: Dogs thrive on routine and structure. Establish a daily routine for your dog that includes regular feeding times, exercise, playtime, and rest. This helps them understand what is expected of them and creates a sense of stability and security.

4. Be present and attentive: Leadership requires being fully present and aware of your dog's behavior and needs. Pay attention to their body language, cues, and signals. This allows you to address any potential behavioral issues or challenges before they escalate.

5. Use positive reinforcement: Reward your dog's good behavior with praise, treats, or toys. Positive reinforcement helps reinforce the desired behaviors and encourages your dog to repeat them. Avoid punishment or harsh methods, as they can create fear and anxiety in your dog.

6. Practice consistency: Consistency is key when it comes to obedience and leadership training. Make sure you are consistent in your commands, expectations, and rewards. This helps your dog understand what is expected of them and reduces confusion.

7. Seek professional help if needed: If you're struggling with obedience or behavioral issues, don't hesitate to seek help from a professional dog trainer or behaviorist. They can provide guidance, personalized training plans, and support to address any specific challenges you may be facing.

Remember, obedience and leadership go hand in hand. By incorporating these principles into your daily interactions with your dog, you can create a strong bond, foster respect, and ensure a well-behaved and balanced furry companion. Happy training! 🐶❤️

🐾🏠 Finding harmony in our homes with our furry friends can sometimes be a challenge, especially when we have dogs with unique personalities. We often talk about the need for training and accountability for stubborn or reactive dogs, but what about our timid and nervous pups?

It's easy to think that holding them to a higher standard of behavior might be unfair or even harmful to their fragile souls. But here's the thing - allowing them to guess and make unhealthy conclusions about their world isn't the answer either. We have a responsibility to teach, guide, and enforce appropriate responses and actions.

Yes, it's true that owning a dog with reactive paranoia can be tough. But from my personal and professional experience, I've found that training these skittish dogs to prioritize their work over their environment is the key to finding peace of mind and building their resilience.

By providing firm yet benevolent instruction, we can help shift their unhealthy fixation into a more positive focus. Instead of allowing the response cycle to progress (see : feel : load : explode), we address the naughty thoughts at the "see" stage and replace the reflex to react with non-negotiable obedience.

Some may argue that holding them accountable for their irrational reactions is cruel, but in reality, it's far worse to let them flounder in unsound assumptions. Allowing a fearful dog to react irrationally only validates and deepens their suspicion.

Accountability doesn't make matters worse; it actually helps them grow and overcome their fears. It's time for us to challenge our own beliefs and emotional discomfort surrounding discipline and accountability. Real leadership can make a world of difference in our timid dog's well-being.

So let's embrace the opportunity to provide clear guidance and support for our nervous pups. Together, we can create a harmonious and loving environment where they can thrive and feel safe. 🐕‍🦺💕
