🎄INFORMATIONAL POST🎄
CHRISTMAS TREES
∗ Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip & fall. A corner location away from close furniture may make the new indoor playground more difficult to reach for cats & small dogs. You can try tethering the tree to the wall or ceiling using fishing line and eye hooks.

∗ Consider using dog pen panels to barricade the tree from young pups.

∗ Some types of pine needles or cones from live trees can cause mouth or stomach irritation if ingested by dogs & cats. Even needles, wires & tips of artificial tree limbs can lead to GI upset and intestinal blockage.

∗ Remember to cover water reservoirs for live trees. The tree water may contain sugary preservatives that attract pets. The standing water can also be a breeding ground for bacteria, as well as possibly containing fertilizers, insecticides or flame retardants toxic to pets.

∗ Lights placed on the tree should be unplugged at night, & when they're on, check them often to be sure there are no damaged areas from pets' chewing. Electric shock can occur, with signs of salivation, pawing at the mouth, and/or signs of mental or physical impairment.

TINSEL, ANGEL HAIR, FLOCKING, EDIBLE GARLAND (popcorn, cranberry,
or raisin strings), & ARTFICIAL SNOW
∗ Avoid these all together in households with pets. These items can lead to mouth & stomach irritation, and tinsel ingestion commonly results in intestinal obstructions and/or choking. The raisins can also be toxic.

ORNAMENTS
∗ Secure all ornaments to the tree so they can't easily fall if the tree is shaken.

∗ Fabric-type ornaments can pose a choking or intestinal blockage hazard.

∗ Shards from broken glass-type ornaments can injure paws, mouths or other parts of the body, as well as causing potential intestinal injuries.

COLD WEATHER
• Pets that sleep indoors at night are not acclimated to be outdoors for extended periods when the temperatures are below freezing. Wind chill must be considered, as well.

• If pets must remain outdoors in cold conditions for brief periods, shelters that provide a warm, dry area out of the wind are essential. Insulated houses or dog igloos, preferably with small entrances & a flap-type door, bedded with straw or wood shavings, are ideal. The house should not be too large--just tall enough for dogs to stand up in & turn around, and toward the small side if meant for multiple outdoor cats. Blankets can easily become wet/frozen compared to shavings or straw. Bales of hay or straw can also be stacked around a dog house to provide additional insulation & wind protection.

• Heated mats or pads can be placed inside the dog house if your dog can be trusted around electrical cords.

• Always use caution with heat lamps! Make sure they are mounted securely so they won’t fall onto flammable bedding materials or can come in contact with your pet

• Dog coats or sweaters are a good idea when short haired breeds are out for winter play or walks, but be sure they are waterproof if your pet will be outdoors for extended periods. A wet sweater soaked through can be worse than no sweater at all.

• Young animals have less cold tolerance than adults--never leave puppies outdoors in cold conditions.

• Heated water bowls are recommended to provide an unfrozen drinking source

• If severe weather alerts are issued recommending that humans remain indoors, it is a good idea to bring your pet inside as well.

• During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.

• Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold causing an animal to freeze to death
