Hereās the finishā¦
Notice the walls behind the cages: that is 4āwide roofing metal laid on its side. Salvaged from a little project my husband did down the road. A perfect barrier to buck p*e! Washes right off .
A/C unit is small, not much needed with all of the insulation.
Exhaust fan is low, the ammonia gases from the urine sink, so if exhaust is low it removes those harmful gasses lickety split! Itās on a timer to clear the room 20 minutes of each hour.
Work table and cabinet are courtesy of daughter, Siera, she was moving and no longer needed them!! Husband made the upper shelf from some rough cut lumber we have. He planed it down and made it beautiful.
Storage shelves are new, Amazon, $40, for incidentals and feed storage.
The little red cart has all the feed and supplements and treats on it and I roll it along the cages at feed time. Boy, you should hear the thumps when they hear it get pulled out! (It has been repurposed from being my old job cart.)
The utility sink was from marketplace, $40, new faucet with sprayer $40. The hose is 25ā and is great for washing down the floor after tray cleaning.
Medicine cabinet is taken from our old tack shack from when the girls were young and using it for their horses.
Refrigerator was given by Stephine and Shawn to use for refreshments, veggie storage etc. Thanks guys!!
The door, not shown, is an exterior metal shop door found on marketplace for $60. Husband had to build the frame since it didnāt come with one.
The little table will be replaced at some point with a laminate countertop. Iām in no hurry and my husband is eager to be released to go bear hunting!!
The Bass Flush Clean cage system was also a marketplace find!!! So blessed! Itās in excellent condition and was just $500.
Last but not least, itās fly seasonā¦so husband built me a screen door!
Thatās it! Weāre in! Bunnies are all much more relaxed. I know some of them had been raised indoors and when they came to us were not quite prepared for all of the predator smells and presence. We are close to the National Forest. We have a number of frequent visitors. Skunks, raccoon, owls, bobcats, bear, cougar, wolves and even a moose was in the backyard a week or so ago. So, needless to say, the city-buns are feeling more at home being inside and pampered !!
I hope these posts were a help to anyone that is thinking of piecing together a place to enjoy their rabbits. My husband and I are retired contractors. Heās the brains, Iām theā¦well, heās the everything. I help. Heās wonderful.
If there are any questions, now or with your own build in the future. Iād be happy to help if I can!
Painting!! My favorite part!!!
This was another area we were able to save because of our past resources.
We used Killz oil-based primer on the wall where we would have the water and the window wall. I wanted extra protection on the wood there. (Thank
you to daughter, Siera, for giving us a partial bucket she had left from a basement renovation project she had just completed! It runs in the family..sheās a handy gal.)
When we ran out of that primer, we used up some tinted primer we had from a house paint job a few years ago. Had enough of that to do two coats on everything.
Finish paint was also from past house paint jobs that weād had in storage. Two walls are ālatteā and two walls are a deep blue.
After the paint, itās on to finish!!
Onward hoā¦
The next phase of sheeting the walls was interesting. As I mentioned, looking on marketplace was quite fun.
We had planned on sheeting the walls with 7/16 OSB. But itās so dang expensive! I found, on marketplace, a warehouse about 2 hours away that was getting rid of 1/2 sheets of 3/8 plywood. They had been used to cover pallets and distribute the weight of huge grain/feed/spice sacks for storage.
We bought a 1/2 truckload for $200 and the OSB would have cost roughly 3 times that.
Yes, it was thinner than the OSB but with the extra framing need for the size of pieces it was kind of a wash. Also, none of the walls are load bearing so it wasnāt really a big deal.
Fun side note: the pieces we bought were apparently used under some bags of dillā¦we smelled like a pickle factory until we got paint on. š¤Ŗš
Next we filled all seams and gaps, sanded and filled some more. As youāll notice, the finish is far from perfect because the material itself is was quite imperfect but for what it will serve as, I think itās just fine!!
Moving onā¦.
Next phase was framing, electrical and insulation.
Framing commenced and electrical was run. I have two full circuits to use for lighting, heat, a/c, exhaust, refrigeration and outlets. If I want more, I can add later.
The three existing outside walls were 2x6 framed. This extra room allowed us to place two different types of insulation. First we used 1 1/2ā rigid insulation against the metal of the building. This will act as a v***r barrier as well as a great first layer against extreme heat and cold. Next we added R19 fiberglass insulation. The new wall that divides the barn is just 2x4 framed with R21 insulation.
The ceiling was dropped by framing with 2x6ās, sheeted with some salvaged 7/16 OSB and some newly purchased. Last but not least, the ceiling was insulated with R31 fiberglass insulation. Iād like to add that we have an awesome neighbor, Shawn (who is our bunny wranglerās daddy), who helped immensely with the ceiling. Iām no longer safe on ladders so Shawn was an extreme blessing!!
The little window was purchased off of marketplace. We priced that size at Home Depot and they wanted $195. The person on marketplace sold us the exact same window, slightly used, for $20!! It pays to look around!!
Continuing onā¦.
The next phase was concrete and boy did we have the best work crew!
We had our wonderful neighbor, Marty, two of our son-in-laws, one daughter and two grandsons that all got into the mess. The granddaughters and I stayed out of the way and made sure they had proper tools water and a nice lunch afterwards!!
The concrete cured for quite a while since while it was being poured my youngest daughter, Tommie, went into early labor in New Mexico and I went to be with her and meet our youngest grandson, Spade David!!
Here we go!!
Since this area is in our barn, we had to move our hay to the other side of the barn and remove the āflooringā that it was stacked on. Next was removal of all the years of hay shake . Then we had to shoot grade to get the elevations correct for the floor drain and top of cement. After elevations were determined, the digging started. We had to tie into our main water line to the house, run pipe to where the sink and hose bib would be, and place the floor drain unit and lay the pipe to where it would drain outside. There will only ever be grey water that drains out. No solids since there is a catch basin at the bottom of the drain box. After that adventure was complete, we raked in all the holes and troughs and placed a bunch of gravel, watered and leveled it properly. Then we were ready for concrete!!!
Long time no seeā¦ š°š
These 2 are 10 weeks old & are still looking for their new homes! If this boy fit into my breeding plans heād be staying, such a sweet soul! The doe is more reserved but is so docile! Both are litter box trained and well socialized to kids and other pets!

Hey all! For all of our rabbit friends!! I have a question:
Iām looking for these plastic corner shelves. I canāt find them anywhere! Iāve seen wooden ones and they, Iām assuming, may be more expensive than the plastic ones. If you have any suggestions please chime in!!
This girl here- Miss Hadley, sheās the real deal when it comes to loving and socializing her bunnies. These two lovely kits are available from her very own litter, at HER house! She has been able to watch them grow and change and has been carefully handling them from very early on. One is a broken lilac doe, the other is a broken blue tort buck who is as sweet as they come. These two come with hours of playtime and are ready to hop to find a new bestie on 8/1!!
