Today we were honored to gather and celebrate Pet Memorial Day (rescheduled from September 8 due to inclement weather). This day has an extra special place in our hearts and minds in part because of our WAVE Donation Program. โค This special program offers our community of pet owners the opportunity to donate their much-loved pets after they have passed, giving these pets an even greater purpose beyond their death.๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿพ Our Reverence for Life Philosophy was the inspiration to create this very special program, and ensures no animal is harmed for the sake of medical education within our curricular courses.

To show our gratitude to these pets, and to honor their human companions, our college holds a memorial service every year to honor their priceless contributions that go forward to impact the lives of our veterinary students during their time here, and during their careers as compassionate veterinarians. Together, we create a lasting legacy, where the love and care we shared with our pets can continue to make a profound impact on the well-being of animals in the future. ๐Ÿคโค

Bonus facts! Did you know most black cats are male? And while superstition paints them as bad luck, some cultures see them as lucky in love and beyond! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ–ค Yet, they are less likely to be adopted from shelters due to factors like superstition and low visibility...๐Ÿฑ

๐Ÿ–ค Let's take the time today to recognize that black cats are pawsitively amazing! Looking for a new furry companion? Consider visiting your local shelter to check out a good-luck black cat!๐Ÿพ

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, which honors the histories, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and their ancestors who lived on the land now known as North America, we also honor the profound contributions of Indigenous communities to our understanding of the world. Native communities have developed extensive knowledge systems based on their deep connection to local ecosystems and the relationships between species. This holistic approach to caring for the environment and animals aligns closely with veterinary medicine's One Health principles, which emphasize the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.

Indigenous wisdom has shaped modern veterinary practices in wildlife conservation, animal stewardship, and sustainable environmental management. Native veterinarians continue to bring these time-honored perspectives to the forefront, contributing to a healthier and more balanced world.

We encourage you to take the time today to explore the vital contributions Indigenous Peoples have made, not only to veterinary medicine but to science, environmental stewardship, and many other fields.

๐Ÿ‘ Kudos to faculty members Wael Khamas and Josep Rutllant for their newest book publication "Anatomy and Histology of the Domestic Chicken" published through Wiley just last month! ๐ŸŽ‰

This comprehensive atlas, which is an invaluable resource for a broad audience (including veterinarians, researchers, breeders, pathologists, and students) serves as a state-of-the-art reference on avian anatomy, specifically focusing on the domestic chicken. ๐Ÿ“ It provides an in-depth collection of original gross anatomy and histology photographs, offering a unique side-by-side view of anatomical structures at both macro and micro levels. With over 200 high-resolution images and diagrams, it covers all major body systems, including the musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, urinary, ge***al, endocrine, nervous, and lymphatic systems. It also delves into egg anatomy, chick embryo development, and applied anatomical concepts relevant to clinical procedures and necropsy. ๐Ÿ“• ๐Ÿฅš

Did you know? ๐Ÿฆ‡ Bats are considered vital to ecosystems around the world! They pollinate plants ๐ŸŒธ like bananas and agave, spread seeds ๐ŸŒฑ that help regenerate forests, and control insect populations (in fact, they can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in a single night!!!) ๐ŸฆŸ, reducing the need for pesticides. Plus, their nutrient-rich guano fertilizes the soil! Please remember that while some bats may seem cute, they are still wild animals and should always be treated with careโ€”just like all wildlife. ๐ŸŒŸ The Xoloitzcuintli, often known as the Xolo or Mexican Hairless Dog, holds deep cultural significance in Latinx heritage. ๐Ÿ•โœจ

The name "Xoloitzcuintli" comes from the Aztec god Xolotl, the deity of lightning and death, combined with โ€œitzcuintli,โ€ the Nahuatl word for dog. โšก๏ธ This ancient breed, revered by the Aztecs, was believed to have mystical healing powers and was entrusted with guiding souls through the afterlife. Xolos were seen as loyal companions in life and protectors in the next, playing a vital role in traditions like Dรญa de los Mu***os. ๐Ÿ’€

Xolos are more than just a breed; they are a living symbol of Mexicoโ€™s rich history: They are considered among the oldest domesticated dog breeds; remains of one dog found at an archaeological site reportedly were dated to about 5,500 years ago! From their playful and affectionate nature to their striking appearance, they still embody the spirit of Mexicoโ€™s past and present. Recognized as Mexicoโ€™s national dog, the Xoloitzcuintli stands tall as a symbol of cultural pride.

Join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by learning more about the incredible Xoloitzcuintli and the vibrant traditions it represents! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ

๐Ÿพ Did you know? Pygmy hippos like Moo Deng produce their own 'sunscreen'! ๐ŸŒžโœจ Since they spend less time in the water than their larger hippo cousins, they secrete a special oily substance that not only acts as 'sunscreen' to protect them from harmful UV rays, but it also keeps their skin moist and helps prevent infections thanks to its antibacterial properties. Natureโ€™s way of giving these cuties a daily spa treatment! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’†โ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ‘‚Sound up for another WesternU CVM ShoutOut! ๐Ÿ”ˆ Meet Dr. Helen Engelke, Assistant Professor of Veterinary Public Health at WesternU CVM. ๐Ÿ˜ Dr. Engelke is here to talk about the importance of observing , the vital need to vaccinate our pets, and how veterinarians are on the frontline of rabies prevention. ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

๐Ÿ‘€ Did you know that each year, across the globe, over 55,000 people succumb to rabies? ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒ World Rabies Day is a powerful reminder of the critical role veterinarians play in keeping both humans and animals safe. Rabies is 100% preventable, and with the help of veterinarians and public participation, we can eliminate this deadly virus.

Letโ€™s work together to create a rabies-free future! Thank you to all the members of the veterinary community who dedicate their lives to protecting the health and well-being of all living beings. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’™

09/24/2024

๐Ÿฆœโœจ The Quetzal is thought to have inspired the deity Quetzalcoatl, a powerful figure in pre-Hispanic civilizations, embodying the unity between heaven and earth. ๐Ÿโœจ It was also seen as a bridge between the divine and the natural world. Its feathers, cherished as sacred, were used in religious ceremonies, symbolizing both divinity and nobility. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

โœจ๐Ÿฆœ The stunning Quetzal, with its shimmering green feathers, is more than just a breathtaking birdโ€”itโ€™s a profound symbol in Hispanic heritage. ๐ŸŒฟ In ancient Mesoamerican cultures, like those of the Mayans and Aztecs, the Quetzal was revered as a symbol of freedom, light, and wealth. Its name, derived from the Aztec word quetzalli, not only referred to its prized feathers but also came to mean "precious" or "beautiful." ๐Ÿ’š

Though its habitat has faced significant threats, leading to the loss of many nesting sites, the Quetzal remains a powerful emblem in LatinX culture. ๐Ÿž๏ธ Today, it continues to represent the rich cultural heritage and the enduring spirit of the Hispanic community. ๐ŸŒ

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, letโ€™s take a moment to honor the Quetzal and its deep cultural significance. ๐ŸŒŸ

09/23/2024

๐ŸŒŸ Did You Know? ๐ŸŒŸ Armadillos are the only mammals with 'shells'! With about 20 species, these fascinating creatures all descend from South American ancestors and vary widely in size, behavior, and habitats. ๐ŸŒŽ While armadillos are native to South America, the nine-banded armadillo is the only species that also calls the United States home. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

These unique animals are related to Glyptodonts, the heavily armored, dinosaur-sized mammals of the past. Unlike the common myth, only two species of armadillosโ€”the Brazilian and Southern three-banded armadillosโ€”can curl into tight balls, a trait that helps them protect themselves from predators.

โœจ Armadillos hold deep cultural significance in Mexico and Central America. In ancient Maya legend, they were created to teach humility to minor gods, while in Mayan mythology, they sometimes played the role of trickster figures. In Oaxaca, the armadillo is often depicted as an alebrije, a spirit animal symbolizing strength. During , itโ€™s important to note these connections as they highlight the armadilloโ€™s role in the rich tapestry of Hispanic culture.๐Ÿ’ช

Did you know? ๐Ÿ† Jaguars have the strongest bite in the cat kingdom (relative to size), delivering an incredible 1,500 psi of pressure! ๐Ÿ’ช These stealthy cats, who prefer to live in dense forests ๐ŸŒณ between Mexico, through Central America, and into the Brazilian Amazon ๐ŸŒŽ, can grow up to 8 feet in length and weigh up to 300 pounds. ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, itโ€™s important to recognize the deep cultural significance of the jaguar in Hispanic cultures. The Maya, along with other ancient Mexican civilizations, revered the jaguar as a deity, believing it had the ability to move between worlds and rule the underworld. ๐ŸŒŒ This majestic animal symbolized strength, war, and magic, appearing in countless forms of art, from masks to sculptures. ๐ŸŽจ

Sadly, jaguars are now considered to be near threatened, having lost 50% of their historic range, with a 20% decline in just 14 years. ๐Ÿ˜” Jaguars play a crucial role in maintaining the structure and function of the ecosystems they inhabit. ๐ŸŒฟ A jaguar-focused conservation strategy can serve as an effective umbrella, protecting a suite of co-occurring species and ensuring the health of entire ecosystems. ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

๐ŸŒŸ Take the time today to learn more about these amazing creatures, their place in cultural history, and their impact on the past and present world.
