***UPDATE*** The Wild Bird Fund provided pictures to update the status of the rescued Merganser in their care and we wanted to share them too. She is resting and recovering and is wearing a sling to support her wing. No broken bones, but a great deal of swelling and injury overall. You can see some of the fishing line that caused the damage. Thank you WBF for your excellent care, wishing the best outcome.

Dear Friends,

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa and happy holidays overall. Reflecting on 2024, the faces of the animals are vibrant in our minds. Some came to the HVHS through our Humane Law Enforcement efforts, as strays, as owner surrenders, or transfers from our partner shelters. Regardless of their origin, they were animals in need of safety, veterinary care, food, water, shelter, a clean and warm place to lay, and for our personnel to love. To all of those animals … we thank you for the trust we witnessed behind your eyes. To our personnel … the HVHS is fortunate to have such a kind, gentle, and professional staff dedicated to animal welfare as they comprise the heart of our organization. To our community … the HVHS is proud to serve you as we begin to close out our 133rd year of existence. Finally, we wanted to take this special time to wish all our friends and supporters a wonderful holiday with all those you hold dear.

Thank you for your support and, as we always do, we wish you kindness in return.

Sincerely,

AnnMarie Gaudio
President & Humane Law Enforcement Commissioner

Earlier today, we received a phone call regarding wildlife in distress severely bound in fishing line in the frozen reservoir off of Convent Road in Orangetown. The owner of the property, Veolia, was contacted and was in full support of providing access so the bird, a Merganser, could be rescued. In order to do so, and as they say “it takes a village”, a team of resources came together, specifically: Veolia personnel, The Orangeburg and Pearl River Fire Departments, the Piermont Fire Department’s Dive Team, the Orangetown Police Department, the Orangetown Animal Control Officer and the Hudson Valley Humane Society. It was a beautiful thing to witness all of these concerned entities and individuals come together for a solution. Thank you all; you are today’s heroes. The bird is currently in intensive care and so far we know there are no broken bones, there is a tremendous amount of swelling, currently there is no necrotic tissue, but time will tell, and the bird also was hypothermic. We will continue to update as we learn more. The HVHS transferred the bird to the Wild Bird Fund in Manhattan for expert care.

Congratulations to Patricia Dessanti-Ferguson for correctly identifying the breed associated with the paw print in the snow. That paw belongs to a Basset Hound named Riley. Basset Hounds have some of the largest paws in the canine world which help to support their low, heavy structure.

***UPDATE*** “BUBBA” our 8-week old puppy who sustained a shattered scapula has undergone a CT scan at The Animal Medical Center in Manhattan to determine the extent of the damage. Bubba tolerated the anesthesia very well and the results indicate that although the scapula is shattered, the joint was not damaged therefore he does NOT require amputation which is great news. Instead, Bubba will need crate rest for at least 6 weeks and will be re-evaluated during this time. He is on medicine to reduce inflammation, eliminate pain and an antibiotic to prevent infection. We will continue to update his adoring public with his progress. In the meantime, thank you to all those sending well wishes for a good outcome for Bubba. Please continue to follow Bubba’s story here on IG or FB. If you would like to make a donation towards his care, please visit our website at: www.hvhumane.org/donate/ Thank you.

Meet “BUBBA” our 8-week old puppy who was surrendered to the Hudson Valley Humane Society from a resident of Airmont (Ramapo), NY. Bubba sustained a shattered scapula and puncture wounds when his sire, a Golden Retriever, was protecting his dinner bowl. It was an unfortunate accident and the vet at the emergency hospital was concerned that Bubba would require amputation. The cost of the diagnostics and potential procedures were prohibitive for the owner, and in lieu of euthanasia, the puppy was surrendered to the HVHS for care. Follow Bubba’s story here on IG and FB. If you would like to make a donation towards his medical care, please visit our website at: www.hvhumane.org/donate/ or send us a text to 917-703-0072. Thank you.

Earlier today, this darling little pit mix named “Nyla” decided to leave the safety of her fenced-in yard in Nanuet and take a walk on route 59. A lovely Good Samaritan found the dog and brought her to the safety of the Hudson Valley Humane Society. She has since been reunited with her mom. The quick notification of her family was made easy because she had a microchip and was wearing a collar with ID. We love happy endings!

Our Story

The HVHS is a full-service, "no-kill" animal welfare organization located in Rockland County, New York. Founded in 1891 as the “Rockland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” under special legislation creating SPCA’s. Historians indicate that we were the 9th society to be formed under this legislation in the State of New York. 128 years later we continue to serve abused, abandoned and unwanted animals in the Hudson Valley region and beyond. At our organization’s core focus is Humane Law Enforcement. We have 3 New York State Peace Officers who investigate animal cruelty complaints in Rockland County; on average we respond to 20 complaints per month.

The HVHS is a New York State not-for-profit corporation. It is “tax exempt” pursuant to Section 501(c)3 of the United States Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. Contributions to the HVHS are deductible from Federal and New York State income tax to the extend permitted by law. Our Federal tax ID number is: 13-1740025. Our New York State Charities Bureau registration number is: 02-16-87. Our NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets Registered Shelter/Rescue number is: RR271.

We are funded by voluntary contributions and by our fundraising efforts. The HVHS receives NO funding via Federal, State or Local taxes.
