Sitting behind the movement, is it correct? THM asked Carl Hester…
And the riders who sit behind the movement, particularly the ones with their shoulders back, they are never going to have self-carriage….
“No, because they are driving the horse down in front. If they sit too strong, behind the vertical, then they are pushing the horse down, through and into the hand. I was told by ‘Rocky’* when you go forward you bring your body forward and when you want to come back, you bring your body back. And it is amazing how most of us do the opposite to that. He always said to me, when you piaffe, you should be sitting over your knee, not sitting on your backside. Charlotte does that naturally, I have to remind myself to do it because I want to be too strong, but that is a really interesting little tip he gave me because piaffe, you get the feeling that you are driving, but in fact you should be sitting over your knee to let the horse use its back.”

One more fitness related insight---

About 60 years ago, Roger Haller had a dressage lesson with a former Hungarian military officer, who’d moved to the USA after World War 2.

I went to watch, and before Roger’s lesson, Major Dezso Szilagyi was teaching a small group of riders who, when he asked them to sit the trot, began to bounce, wheeze and sweat.

Major Szilagyi was a basically soft spoken, kindly person, not one who ranted, but it was apparent that he was frustrated about what he was watching. He had them line up, and after all these years, what he said to them is as clear as if I’d heard it last week.

“Ladies and gentlemen----May I humbly suggest to you that dressage riding is not the last refuge of the non athlete.”

To begin asking your horse to develop more pushing power from behind …

Imagine he is a powerboat. As you increase the power from his hind end with your lower leg and following seat, his front end rises.—David Marcus

A dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada, Marcus rode for the United States throughout his Young Rider career before taking up the Canadian flag. He and Chrevi’s Capital represented Canada at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. He is also a well-respected trainer who has helped students of all levels work to achieve their goals.

Carl Hester and other experts talk about correct contact:
“The contact from the hand to the mouth is key from beginning to end. A horse balances itself with its neck. When you see a horse ridden with a short neck, that means the balance is on the rider’s hand and the horse is not in self-carriage. Everybody has to work on that in every level.”

Our Story

Are you interested in taking your riding skills to the next level? HHG Dressage is proud to give you the skills and knowledge to take your ability to the next level.

What is Dressage? it is the systematic schooling of horse and rider to develop the horse’s natural athletic ability and willingness to work in a happy willing partnership with the rider. The result is a calm, supple, and attentive horse and rider combination. We teach our horse and riders rhythm, relaxation, connection, impulsion, straightness and collection. Riders learn to achieve balance through a supple correct seat and a strong core. Basic dressage seat and foundation for the horse is the core for all styles of riding and helps any rider learn to communicate more clearly with their horse,
