Watching the horses graduate and succeed with their owners is the force that drives us here at Schmutz Family Horse Training LLC!!! Treasure spent 4 months with us and we couldn't be happier with him! He had to overcome challenges with being so tall and narrow (attributes from his thoroughbred lineage), young horse mistakes, etc., but he kept working hard to learn and finished like a rock star! We really worked hard with him to smooth all this out because he is going home to a family with young kids and his owners had less than desirable results with former young horses. No other horse has finished our program with as much experience going to shows, working at the sale barn pushing cows, spending nights in different paddocks and stalls , etc as Treasure simply because they haven't been with us as long as he has!! He's even going home a money earner as the reserve champion 2-year-old working cow horse from the Cheney Iron Horse challenge! Treasure has come so far and we know he has such a bright future with his owners Josh and Julia Debes!!
Well lil' Okie is starting to pick up some new skills. We love exposing our horses to all kinds of events so that when they go to their forever home they have the opportunity to go in a multitude of different directions, and, as always, are well rounded horses. With a little more practice he will make a really good pony for an up and coming rodeo star. And may I also say how cute his trot is!
Not many 2-year-old horses can you take to the sale barn and ride on their very second ride! Storm is already leaving a wave behind him! Schmutz Family Horse Training is just astounded by the progress storm is already making! Lisa and her husband should be so proud of the horse that he's going to become!
Schmutz Family Horse Training is excited to welcome Lisa's 2 year old colt Storm to our program!! They came all the way from northern Missouri to trust us with starting Storm. This is exactly how everyone should prepare their horses to go to the training facility. Lisa and her husband texted a couple months ago informing us they had practiced some tying up, ponying, and saddling sessions. This led to a very low stressful situation for the colt and allows him to jumpstart into our program so much quicker! As a trainer this increases the safety for both the horse and the rider substantially. We can't wait to see where this colt goes!
With transforming Schmutz Family Horse Training into a full time business we thought it would be beneficial for our clients and followers to get to know us better! Stetson and Catherine Schmutz are the proud owners of this business! This week we will focus on Stetson the trainer of the business and next week we will focus on Catherine the brains and the organization behind it all! Stetson grew up near Brookville, Kansas. Stetson grew up training and showing horses in FFA, 4-H, and local open horse shows in every event from halter to barrels, reining to hunter under saddle, cart driving to showmanship, and much more. He started training horses for neighbors and friends at the age of 15. He also gave riding lessons for several years. In 2008, Stetson and his horse Sage competed in Craig Cameron's extreme cowboy race and placed 8th out of 50. Stetson graduated from Kansas State University in 2012 with a bachelor's in Animal Science and a certificate in Equine Science. This certificate consisted of 20 credit hours both in the classroom and externship experience in the following equine fields: anatomy and physiology, artificial insemination and embryo transfer, genetics, research on cannulated horses, pairing with a mare to foal out her offspring, three training classes (weanlings to two year old colts), etc. Stetson was also a member of the 2011 Kansas State University Horse Judging team. From there, he completed several years of veterinary education. During that time, he completed focused equine classes and externships including: dental, medicine, reproduction, surgery, and much more. During college, Stetson was a Wrangler at Sombrero Stables in Estes Park Colorado, guiding trail rides through the mountains, on steady steads through the beautiful landscape. Stetson has nearly 20 years of veterinary technician work in both mixed animal private practice and completing two years as an equine surgery technician at Oklahoma State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
