Today was the last day to aggravate Sir Robert White here at home, naturally I burned a couple PTO days and this morning saw the boys and a friend at " Quail Mecca". Bit of a hike to get to but an entire valley of native bunch grass and plum thickets, always find birds there. Right off the bat we had a great point and flew a 25 bird covey. Worked singles until lunch time when our pal had to leave, lots of great dog work and shooting opportunities for everyone. Spent the afternoon working smaller covers with a little success, ended at a place we call the " Old Cellar Cover" an oddity of a place in that we've flown Pheasant, Bobwhites and Woodcock all in the same walk. Today didn't disappoint, Hondo and Remi pointed and flushed at least seven Woodcock. Out of season but still great fun, worked them until the end of shooting light. Beautiful day afield with friends and family, safe to say we went out with a bang...

Spent this windy Sunday heckling Gentleman Bob with the oldest and middle boys. Still lots of water in my favorite brushy bottoms so we had to improvise again and hunt some overgrown field edges and tangled plum thickets. Moved a few covey's, worked some singles and ate a nice lunch on the tailgate. All in all a great day afield.

The oldest two boys wanted to get out after ducks one last time on the Youth/ Veterans Day. The ducks cooperated and both boys had some good shooting. Hondo marked all of his retrieves well and handled the flooded buck brush wonderfully, just gotta work a little more on the whining. Thank God for family, good friends and birds to pursue...

Two of the dudes and I took a little day trip today. Explored a few new to us properties and in short order ran into our pal Gentleman Bob. Naturally every covey we moved out of the overgrown draw flew straight up the sheer walls and split into singles on the rim ( only to fly back down again...) Lots of good dog work from Remi and Young Wren, they moved more birds than I could keep up with on my flush counter. Lots of shooting from the oldest and middle boy, a little hitting.

Tailgate lunch then Hondo and Storms turn at another property. Same MO from not so Gentlemanly Bob here, lots of running and even lighting into a damn tree... Another great day afield. Off to bed and after The King tomorrow.

Chilly here this morning, set out after the King but Sir Robert White had other plans.... As soon as the frost was gone scenting conditions got tough but we made the best of it. Ended with a nice lunch for The Boy and I.

Slipped out just the old gals and I this morning. We found Gentleman Bob in a brushy overgrown creek bottom, took a double on the second rise and a few singles afterward. Some great finds and retrieves from both dogs, frost on the ground really improved scenting conditions today. Hopefully conditions will stabilize and we can take some birds in this year's thick cover.

Slipped out this morning to check on one of my favorite covey's to hunt. They're doing well, decided to work singles a bit after taking one on a beautiful rise. Best shooting I've had with the little 28 gauge yet this year. Now to rest the mutts and work on the chore list...

The gang and I have been on a bit of a mission this season, throughout the summer we discussed the likelihood of bagging all of the upland game birds in our state on one season and just how many species we could come up with in our travels abroad this year. Only counting species commonly pointed or flushed with the dogs. So far we're at five total species and all four found in our part of Oklahoma. May have to pack up our game and head out west to try our hand at finding a Blue Quail next.

It's been a slow start to our bird season but a heck of a start to finish for our deer season, we had to fill the freezers first. Each Kight has got their buck while Liam and Keleigh have also harvested a doe each. The two littles got their first bucks which is a memory they will never forget but Liam his is really a buck of a lifetime to most. Remi (yellow girl) has always been one to find deer while in the bird field so we thought why not give her a try on tracking Liams doe, she found it and was so proud. Now the freezers are full and public land restrictions are almost lifted for rifle season so its time to get after them birds more. Here are our harvest for 2023.

Took advantage of a slow afternoon at work and got out after Gentleman Bob with the oldest boy today. Very warm and dry, lots of bumped birds and even worse shooting but much better than work. Young Wren is coming along nicely, literally Remi's shadow in the field.

We often are asked why we use labs for upland hunting when there are other breeds who are more "fit" for the job and this is why. We have at home working labs and field working labs but they know when to switch it on and off. Our dogs will get along with all the animals we own including birds but when they hit that field the game is on.

Ever wonder what to do with the rest of the game birds once you eat the breast? One of our favorite things to do with the legs, thighs, backs and any non prime portions of game birds ( rabbit and squirrel too) is to make Yellow rice and black beans with it.

We were all born and raised in Central Florida and this dish is a staple there, brought by the heavy influence of Caribbean people among the population.

I usually start with Spatchcocked birds ( quick YouTube search has many good examples of how to do this). Fillet the breast meat off and sit aside for grilling or frying as usual then:

- Add the remainder of the Spatchcocked birds ( 3-4 rooster pheasant, 12 Quail)to a stock pot with 6 quarts water, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder. No measurements, just add until your ancestors say enough 😉.Bring to a boil and boil for 25-30 minutes with the lid on. Turn of and let cool to make a stock.

- While the birds are boiling, dice one white onion, a couple Cubanelle peppers ( bell will do if Cubanelle aren't available) and set aside.

- Once birds are cool enough to handle, strain them out of the stock. KEEP THE STOCK! And pick all of the meat from the bones. Be careful to sort out the small leg tendons and bones ( pictured) and any blood shot meat or bone chips.

- Bring stock to a boil. Add two bags yellow rice ( we like Vigo found in the Hispanic food aisle at most stores) meat and vegetables.

- Stir steadily for one minute after boiling.

- Reduce to medium heat, cover with lid and simmer with lid on until all water is absorbed.

- Serve with Black Beans (canned are quick and easy) and a good hunk of crusty bread. Cuban bread is best, Italian or French will do.

As pictured is made with Sharptails from this year's trip to the Sandhills. Don't waste those backs, legs and thighs anymore! Recipe works just as well with any small game and a mixed bag is ok too!
