Teaching recall isnā€™t just about getting your dog to come when calledā€”itā€™s about building trust, understanding, and engagement. In this session, weā€™re working with a bird dog, focusing first on clarity before crispness. Before we expect perfection, the dog has to truly understand whatā€™s being asked.

Once they get it, thatā€™s when we start refining speed and responsiveness. Training in different environments is keyā€”dogs donā€™t generalize well, so practicing in new places helps them learn to respond no matter the setting.

Dog training is always a balance of work and fun. The more engaging and mentally stimulating the process, the better the results! Check out our latest session and see this bird dog in action.

I'll take 20 minutes of mental stimulation with "no results" vs 2 hour physical exertion, EVERY TIME. Plus, my mom startled me šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Creative Dog Training: Overcoming New Challenges with My Belgian Malinois! (Plus a Surprise Guest! šŸ˜‚)

When bad weather forced us to get creative, I decided to challenge my Belgian Malinois with something completely newā€”going up and down the stairs of our underground storm shelter. Heā€™s never done this before, making it a great confidence-building exercise!

Youā€™ll see me patiently working to lure him up the stairs, proving that mental challenges can be just as exhausting (if not more) than physical exercise. But in the middle of our sessionā€¦ letā€™s just say my mom made a surprise entrance that I was NOT expecting! šŸ˜‚

Dog training is all about adaptability. Sometimes, the best lessons come from unexpected moments. Watch how a simple change in routine can turn into an incredible training opportunity!

Cooper the Trooper! Enough can not be said for the commitment to our area pets that is provided by Northern Oklahoma Humane Society, Paula S Collins , Rhea Jones, and countless other employees and VOLUNTEERS. We were happy to step in at the end to complete the puzzle, but there was almost 2 YEARS of care and love that went into this single dog. Thank you to everyone who contributes to the pets of our communities!

Today, we celebrate a dream come true! šŸŽ‰ NOKHS is over the moon to announce that our beloved Cooper, who has been with us for an incredible 715 days, has finally found his forever haven with the amazing Troy! šŸ™Œ A heartfelt thank you to Ponca City K9 for believing in Cooper and for giving him a second chance at happiness. We're thrilled that they've become his forever family! šŸ’• Cooper's journey is a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and the unwavering dedication of our community. šŸŒŸ

2 part post: 1) We've decided Cooper shouldn't wait any longer for a permanent home, so we've decided to keep him as part of our family. 2) Part of our Board & Train consists of playtime (no training), as happy dogs make the best trainees. This is the goofy side of a Malinois!

Thank you to everyone who came out for Day 1 of group class. A second more detailed post to follow!

When I say our Board & Train dogs learn house manners, I mean we really bring your dog(s) into our home to teach boundaries and personal space. Yes he's allowed on the couch at home, no he can not pester people while they eat. Good job Tuck Tuck (true identity withheld due to his rising fame).

Incorporating hand feeding into bonding with your dog is a really under utilized tool...

In this clip, our 1.5-year-old Belgian Malinois steps in to correct a Goldendoodle puppy whoā€™s getting a little too pushy. The Malinois gives a quick, appropriate correction, and the GD responds well by backing off. But when the Malinois goes in for a little reinforcement, I step in with a ā€œLeave Itā€ commandā€”shifting control from dog-to-dog correction to owner-to-dog correction.

For me, ā€œLeave Itā€ is a versatile command that applies when a dog is focusing too much on something but hasnā€™t fully engaged (like picking up an object). If the object were already in his mouth, Iā€™d use ā€œOut.ā€

Watch as the Malinois processes the expectation: ā€œYouā€™ve done your job, Iā€™ve got this now.ā€ Even though I had to repeat the command, you can see he understands that itā€™s time to disengage. Meanwhile, our Goldendoodle pup is free to continue being a puppy.

Using my dogs to help teach proper social interaction is just one piece of a well-balanced training program. This sweet little guy is here for a Board & Train, and structured socialization plays a big role in his development! šŸ•āœ…

šŸŽ„ Watch, learn, and let us knowā€”how do your dogs handle pushy play? šŸ¤”šŸ‘‡
