Hurricane aquarium survival tips:

#1 DO NOT FEED YOUR FISH IF YOUR FILTRATION SYSTEM IS NOT RUNNING

#2 Battery powered air pumps - your tank can survive on this for days if not a week or more. You can run it 5 minutes every hour to conserve battery life in most aquariums. Heavily stocked cichlid tanks will NEED more, at least 5 min every 30. If you see your fish starting to gasp at the surface, run your air pump for 5 minutes longer than it takes for them to go back to swimming normally.

#3 Generators if you have one, just run the filter, no need to run lights or heater during a summer power outage

#4 car batter and 12v power invertor can be used as well, run your filter 5 minutes every hour of 5min after your fish start swimming normally if they start gasping at the surface.

#5 If you are using a canister filter and it has not run in 6 hours or more, unplug it. Clean your filter media in tank water before you put it turn it on once you have power. Anaerobic conditions in a sealed canister will do nasty things to the water inside it and you dont want it to go back in your tank.

#6 If you have a sump type filter, an inexpensive 12v bilge pump and some tubing to get the water from the sump up to the tank can run your filter off of a car/boat battery.

#7 If you have no other method, stir the water at the top of your tank frequently to improve gas exchange.
