I had made up my mind and was on my way to Starkville when MSU called me and said it would be $3,000-$5,000 JUST TO WALK IN THE DOOR and I had to pay $3,750 before they would even look at him. That is absolutely outrageous. There is just no way. Even if we exhausted all of our resources, we still wouldnā€™t have enough to have him seen, much less the upwards of $10,000 his bill would ultimately cost. Heartbroken doesnā€™t begin to describe how I feel. Itā€™s just money. I have always said itā€™s just money and have always done all I could to save all I can. But now itā€™s just money we donā€™t have combined with time he doesnā€™t have left to be able to raise enough money to be seen by MSU šŸ’”.

The last Hail Mary option is for my vet to do an exploratory surgery to see if there is a weird obstruction somewhere that didnā€™t show up on X-ray or ultrasound. He probably wonā€™t survive the surgery in his current state but itā€™s all we have left to try within our means.

Heā€™s much worse and we have no idea why. He has lost over a pound since Thursday. WBC is higher. Now his RBC is off the charts as well. Most of the results on his bloodwork are worse than they were on Thursday. Whatever is wrong with him is moving super fast šŸ’”šŸ’”šŸ’”. Iā€™m so torn about what to do. Euthanize him or take him to MSU. Itā€™s probably not treatable. Do I make the trip and spend the money just to get an exact diagnosis to have to euthanize him anyway? Can I live with not taking him on the 1% chance it could be something treatable? Oh, my heart.

Help! We need a temporary foster in Vermont. This is Gina. She is a very sweet 2 year old lab who was adopted this weekend to Vermont. Iā€™ve fostered her the last year and have not had any issues, but the stress of transport and new environment has caused her to have behavior problems with her new adopter. She loves kids and has become overly protective of her new kids to where she is growling at the parents (particularly dad) whenever they are near the kids which obviously will not work. She was never like this with our kids and adored my husband so I think itā€™s just the stress of the move. Her new family is heartbroken, but will not be able to keep her. Are there any previous adopters that would be willing to foster until we can transport back to our rescue? She is great with cats and dogs. She has not bitten, but growls and barks.

I donā€™t know that heā€™s worse but he definitely isnā€™t better. He had a tiny appetite for one day and then went back to refusing to eat. I have been syringe feeding him multiple times a day but itā€™s a fight every time. He spits out everything he can and Iā€™m not sure how much is actually getting down him. Weā€™ll go back to the clinic tomorrow and get an update on his bloodwork but Iā€™m afraid whatever is going on will have to be handled by a specialist. My best guess is cancer with the symptoms but we didnā€™t see any masses on his X-rays. Heā€™s just a baby at barely 3 years old. This isnā€™t fair šŸ˜ž.

Iā€™m so thankful and grateful that we have had enough donated to make an initial appointment with MSU but the diagnostics could be thousands. I know heā€™s ā€œjust a dogā€ but heā€™s just a dog that I love very much. I want to do for him what any family would do to try to save their beloved family pet, even if he will never have the opportunity to get that family šŸ˜žšŸ„ŗ. I owe it to him for bringing him into my home; I might very well be the only family he ever knows šŸ’”.

He ate a little breakfast on his own this morning! It wasnā€™t enough and I still had to syringe feed him some but any improvement is exciting.

Our current plan is to continue antibiotics and syringe feeding until Monday. Then we will need to recheck bloodwork and see where we stand.

We didnā€™t get enough donated to cover all of the testing I wanted to have done and definitely wonā€™t be able to take him to MSU for diagnosis but we did get a few diagnostics completed. Unfortunately, the results left us with more questions than answers.

Bloodwork showed his white blood cell count was off the charts which indicates infection somewhere. But his organ function was all within normal range and he doesnā€™t have a fever so infection doesnā€™t quite make sense. No indications of diabetes. F***l had no intestinal parasites. 4dx test was negative for heartworms or any tick borne illnesses. X-ray was most concerning - it showed a spot on his heart that could be a tumor. But it also could have been a swollen lymph node and nothing to worry about. No obstructions were visible.

While we know more about his illness than we did, we really donā€™t have any answers. Top suspects are still a heart condition, cancer, an autoimmune disease, or something super rare. There isnā€™t any further testing we can do without going to MSU and the costs just arenā€™t feasible.

So where does that put us? Weā€™re starting him on a Hail Mary round of antibiotics to try and knock out that infection and get his wbc down to normal ranges, an appetite stimulant, and syringe feeding. I hope itā€™s enough to pull him through whatever is going on and it isnā€™t something incurable šŸ’”.

Is it too late to wish for a Christmas miracle?

He never stood a chance - a black dog born in Mississippi to an owner who never wanted him or his siblings. They were never played with and all six turned feral. Maybe they should have just been euthanized two years ago. At seven months old and completely untouchable, I knew theyā€™d never be adoptable. I knew it meant me taking on another six dogs that I didnā€™t realistically or financially think I could handle. Every single other rescue or shelter would have euthanized them.

But I watched them from the back window. I saw them wrestle and play. I could see the love they have for each other, even if they didnā€™t have any for me. I witnessed them fearless and having a good time āœ‹šŸ¼. I couldnā€™t kill them. So I kept them and have worked with them daily for over two years. Kingston and Kevin finally started to take treats out of my hand a few months ago. None of them run to greet me but they donā€™t cower in terror anymore either.

That brings us to last week. Around Monday, I noticed Kingston was beginning to look a little thin and made a mental note to keep an eye on him. I offered him extra treats and canned food but he barely touched them. By Friday night, I decided he needed to see the vet. And this morning? He was so thin that he was almost unrecognizable.

I took him to the clinic and found out he has lost 11 pounds in less than a week. Thatā€™s about 1/4 of his body weight. He also has an acute heart murmur. And we have no idea why. Initial ideas are heart failure, heart valve malfunction, or some type of cancer. Some diagnostics had to be performed to narrow down the cause: bloodwork to rule out any type of organ failure, X-rays to check for tumors, 4dx test to test for any tick borne illnesses, and f***l to inspect for intestinal parasites to name a few.

No, he isnā€™t adoptable. And he probably never will be. But does that make him any less worthy of what Iā€™d do for any other dog in my care? Of course not. He deserves saving as much as any other pup.

Merry Christmas to us, I guess?

Half a dozen puppies have been abandoned at two of my foster homes in the last week. WE DONā€™T HAVE ROOM. One of those fosters has been battling parvo for a few weeks and they donā€™t have anywhere to keep the new guys separate so now theyā€™re exposed. Weā€™ve had THREE adoptions for the entire month of December. SIX dogs have been dropped out on us. TWENTY-EIGHT people have contacted us about taking animals. It killed my soul just a little bit more every time I had to say no. We will never get ahead at this rate šŸ˜£. Never.

I get it. Weā€™re the only option most people know about. There isnā€™t a shelter in our county. TLHS doesnā€™t accept out of county animals because theyā€™re overwhelmed with their own countyā€™s problems. But this is not the solution - tossing them out of the car at our homes and taking advantage of us. The only two options should be to get your own pet spayed/neutered so you donā€™t have unwanted puppies or to foster until adoption if they are stray puppies you need help with. As much as I like to believe so, we arenā€™t superheroes. We canā€™t do it all. Not without a little support.

I feel like Iā€™m constantly asking for donations but we are constantly in need. We used to be able to sustain ourselves on adoptions fees but we used to have 10+ adoptions every month. It has been like this for two years šŸ˜ž. A decade of enough adoptions to get by and it just freaking stopped. With zero warning. Things were supposed to be better by now but theyā€™re only getting worse. No choice but to keep on, keepin on a la Joe Dirt and help the few I can. Nothing quite like utter despair and hopelessness to celebrate the holiday.

šŸ‘‘KING JULIENšŸ‘‘

Well. Here I am, finally making the post I have been avoiding due to guilt and embarrassment. Itā€™s a rookie emotion and I know better.

But I love this cat.

Julien isnā€™t the kind of animal I get to keep. My house is for hospice, for the too ill to be adopted, for the Reynolds-esque pets who nobody else will want. The young, adoptable ones donā€™t get to stay. That isnā€™t how this works.

But I really love this cat.

I have been experiencing some rather difficult times in my life. The unconditional love and pure joy that I get from Julien is something I need right meow. He sleeps on my chest every night and curls underneath the covers with me. Heā€™s my constant companion and such great company. Maybe I should let him go to someone who can love him like I doā€¦

But I REALLY, REALLY love this cat.

We have lost eight members of our family in the last year due to old age. It broke me each and every time. I didnā€™t think Iā€™d be able to accept another and love a new friend.

But Iā€™m keeping this cat šŸ«£šŸ„¹šŸ’•.
