Baby orphan Gravy, I’m his Mama now, sporting his Old Navy horsie blanket❣️. Perfect fit. He’s only 5 1/2 months old and this cold snap is pretty cold. He’s doing great now.
Hokey Pokey Ranch was created as a place to rescue and re-home neglected & abused horses, donkeys & others. "A place to turn horses around."

Hokey Pokey Ranch was created as a place to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home horses and donkeys that have been abused, neglected, and overall forgotten. We strive to find these beautiful souls forever loving homes that will continue to care for them the way we do.

Baby Gravy didn’t appreciate me blowing him sugars 😂❣️
Just a few of the furry critters ❣️
The crew all got goodies today. After the light snow we got last night.
Thank you SO very much Cory Pace of Twin P Ranch for the donation of square bales of hay! Our first real, for real, donation. The horses, donkeys, cows, and goats appreciate it SO much.
I am speechless. And that doesn’t happen very often lol. I am forever in your debt. Humbly I thank you
Wednesday morning I got up at 8, grabbed a feed sack, outside check on Maybell next to my house, and this is what I found. She’d just had number 3. They are absolutely beautiful adorable gorgeous ❤️🐐❤️. 2 girls and a boy. The one with more white is the boy. Maybell and Henry did such a good job. All are spoken for and I want one now!
I sure hope cows aren’t allergic to carrots. Love my little Hercules to pieces ❤️❤️❤️
Curly says good morning world❣️
We had visitors/adopter today! I love it when kids enjoy the critters. Almost everyone got lovin. Even Gunsmoke got in on it ❤️.
The ppl across the street from us are adopting a donkey. Ethel lost her BFF and is always by herself. The others are all paired off. She was all about getting scratches. She’s never been haltered since I’ve had her. She took it very well. The leading, uh, needs a little more work 😂. But we’ll trailer her over there. I wouldn’t lead anyone but a dog across our busy road. So when I feed tonight I’ll see if I can get her tied. Will go from there. 🤞
Gosh what a day! Picked up a friend that I asked to help me today.
1st…backed trailer up to round pen so we could move Miss Betty, Lisa Ritt Isenhour’s baby girl, over to the square pen with my pregnant Highlander. Finally, she got in the trailer after being lunged when she’d turn away from the trailer. Poor fat girl was huffing n puffing lol. Now the girls are getting along great so far 👍
2nd…backed trailer up to stall one that’s full of donkeys. Managed to get Benny n Gus, also Lisa’s, loaded and put them in back pasture. They’re hopefully a lot happier. Now the 3 pregnant jennys will have more room. And I have a place for Elvis to go in the near future 🤞.
3rd…moved Mr mini Blackie, Marie Diane Basgil-Hunt’s, in with Bailey, also from Marie, and my mini bull. It was supposed to be for an attitude adjustment. He’s been picking on his 2 roommates too much. The 2 boys say it’s a family reunion!! Who knew 🤷♀️
Everyone is getting along great and hopefully a lot happier.
Then put 2 round bales in back pasture. 2 bales every 8 days. The horses are probably thinking, she’s replacing us with these things that have long ears. I love them all.
Also put a round bale in square pen for the girls.
I hate asking for help, but I couldn’t have done any of this without her. I’m so glad she available on such a short notice. ❤️
So what does a ranch hand do on a hot day? Clean out the big blue water trough. Got one side fairly clean and plopped down in it to clean the rest of it. Of course I had to make sure it filled up properly so I took in some sun and got some weird looks from Myron, Greybo, Chico, Fred Asteer and Dexter. They didn’t know what to think about some goofy human thing in their water 😂🤷♀️🐴🤦♀️😁❤️🐴
Update: I couldn’t help myself. But Shelby said I had to do a hat and big sunglasses. So I did. The water felt so good! She put one of her dogs, Clyde, in with me. He loves water too❣️ But no horses to see what on earth I was doing 😕. Next time a margarita goes with me!
Cleaned out the big blue trough today. It was way overdue. It’s a wonder I didn’t fall in it scooting around the edge scraping off the crud. Then I called the crew to see if it passed or not. I think they approved LOL. While it was filling up, I filled up on sugars and lovin. Then Kahluah decides to lay in the nasty water puddle from the mud in the trough. I love my dog. I love my dog. The nice clean water looks so inviting. This is my happy place. ❤️🐴❤️😁❤️🐴💕
After feeding and cleaning out water troughs, I grabbed a handful of ‘our’ hay/grass and gave it to the donkey girls and Myron. They left their feed and ate all the grass! Hay is always the last resort before. So I grab feed sacks and my rake. I am now in my own hay business. Raking and baling—well in my case bagging. This is about the 6th cutting. I’m picking it up by hand so can feel for stickers (none in this little field) or dampness. Since they’ll eat it; I’ll pick it up 😁👍❤️🐴❤️
I have a new entourage of supervisors. They es**rt me to the feed room. Make sure I’m getting the right stuff. And dang sure let me know about it❣️ 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
Today was a big day for Fred Asteer and Dexter. Approximately 8 or so months old.
Fred follows a feed bucket into my trailer. No problem. Close slant. Done! Dexter.....hmmm, a different story. 25 minutes later got him in. Phew. Off to North Texas Vet we go. First ever trailer ride for them. We got in early cause I had them loaded early at home. Works for me!
Fred is first. He’s the sweetheart lover boy. When they tied his head up I got the ‘go to hell’ look. Got castrated, wormed and vaccinations. In talking to Dr Sweat I asked how much longer their horns will get. He said double of what they are now. I asked can you de-horn them? He asked again about what was in back pasture. Horses n donkeys. He said he’s had horses come in gouged from cows. De-horn them then while we’re here definitely!!! They hardly bled at all. He said the almanac says at certain times the blood is in their feet. He used to think whatever. Now he’s a believer.
Neeeext, Dexter. All the same stuff Fred got. I had no idea where their horn was is a hole. He said it will fill in. I kept one horn from each. Morbid, I know 🤷♀️. Loading Fred gets in no problem. Dexter again took some coaxing. Brat. In the square pen for a day or two, then in the back pasture they’ll go. They’re always trying to get back there; they should be happy then. Trailer is cleaned out 👍. I’m pooped. After today, does this make me a cowgirl now? 😂😂😂
I love my life ❤️🐴❤️🐄❤️🐐
Frank n Jesse are almost 8 months old. They got to visit today❣️ They met Voodoo. They met Fred n Dexter. And they got to meet the baby donkeys. They followed me back n forth putting feed up like puppy dogs. Love these little guys ❤️🐐❤️🐄❤️🐴❤️

Hello from us outlaw brothers, Frank n Jesse. We will be 4 months old on the 30th. We are growing like weeds!! We moved into the bigger pen in the barn after Mama fixed the door. We officially have a shelter now. Home sweet home ❤️🐐❤️
Myron got to go visit the back pasture this evening...he loves stretching his legs! #standardbred #horse #rescue #ranchlife #rescueranch #running #horsesofinstagram #horseoftheday
Augustus says good morning and happy weekend everyone. What he’s really saying is hurry up and feed us!!!! Augustus came from a kill pen. With a horrific deep brand. He was 1/2 bailed so we paid the other half and took him home. We put him on meds as he was a pretty sick boy. One night while on a transport Khris told me to be prepared we might lose him as he was in bad shape. We decided to give him all the meds we had and see what happens. I dreaded the next text from her. Until she said he ❤️ made it ❤️ through the night and appeared to be doing lots better! Thank God❣️ We had him in some ppl’s custody for a little while. He misses his little girl 😢 but he has all of our hearts and attention. He’s a sweetheart and stays here forever. The funny part is we got him to be adoptable since our other 4 stay. We failed lol. We’d be foster failures big time. 😁🐴🤷♀️🐴
One of our board members, Rusty Hamby, has been working several days on the goat pen. He doubled the size of it. Took down some junky stuff. Made them an area with steps and a ramp and a higher ladder thingy across between the trees. They LOVE it!! It looks beyond awesome and handicap friendly.
Today was mini pedi day here. All 5. We have a farrier that doesn't mind doing them. Ed looks so funny sitting on his knees doing their feet. Precious Peanut was missed in the photos. Just wasn't thinking yet. One of ours, Juanita, and one of Claire Goodson, Julio, are always the last ones cause they hate being caught. They tried everything but got their feet done anyway. Laying down and it's not like they're that far from the ground to start with. To be so little, those little sh*ts can run and dart so fast!! But Rusty said when kids go into the pen the little 'angels', uh-hum, love the affection! Ed had to lasso Juanita and got her on the first try. Way to go! So funny to watch 5 adults wrangling these tiny darlings lol.
Day before yesterday Rusty took Indigo out of her stall since she's been here. Very happy day. Marlane Amelio bailed her and her Mama out of Bastrop's kill pen and gave them to Kim Thomas, of Thomas Foundation Second Chance Horse Rescue. Sadly, Mama Marlane didn't make it but a couple days in the free world. Khris met Kim where they were being QT'd to say their goodbyes. Khris Hamby led Indigo to her Mama to say goodbye. Indigo had to spend a few days at Outlaw Equine to make sure she didn't have what Mama had. Then Indigo came here for more QT'ing and 'poop' watch. She's outta the stall now. We put her in with Sloan, another rescue Kim has trusted us with. A very large square pen and the herd can come up and all get acquainted over the fence. My daughter's horse is getting up in age and needs to take it easy now. Waiting to see if Khris and Indigo 'click'. My horse is good for 20+ years. While a leopard appy is my dream horse, so is my daughter's dream horse. Either way, Indigo is here for life. Her and Sloan look so nice n cool together. In a few weeks may see about transitioning them into the herd. Indigo has the deepest eyes that begged to be loved. And she will be here. Thank you so much Kim for these gorgeous new members of the Hokey Pokey Ranch Family.
