It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Cathy.

Cathy was more than just a coworker; she was a cherished member of our team, a dear friend, a helpful hand, and a shoulder to cry on for us and our clients who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a staple here at Island Animal Clinic for over 23 years. She was crucial to our success and happiness and will be missed immensely. She was full of warmth, kindness, and dedication. Her presence certainly brightened the clinic, even on the difficult days. Cathy was a feisty spirit with a heart of gold.

Services will be held this Sunday the 28th at 2:00pm at Trinity by The Sea in Port Aransas, TX.

If you would like to send flowers to her family, you can send them to Charlie Marshall’s Funeral Home in Aransas Pass, TX.

Cathy’s absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. She will be profoundly missed by all who had to the privilege of knowing her. We are heartbroken and are trying to process this loss, Cathy is irreplaceable.

How many tv shows or movies have you seen where a dog is chewing on a bone or jerky chew? Dogs love to chew so many owners’ first choice to keep pets occupied and content is to give their pet a jerky treat. Although this may seem like a clever idea, there is evidence showing that ANY type of jerky treats have been leading to a kidney illness called Fanconi-Like Syndrome. Great alternatives to jerky treats are Milk Bones, Carrots, Celery, or if you are looking for something to help keep your pets’ teeth clean Greenies are a good option too, if your pet chews them. Below is an article by the FDA that goes more in depth into issues caused by jerky treats. Please help us spread awareness.

Since 2007, FDA has received reports of illnesses in pets associated with the consumption of jerky pet treats.

“I have been at the clinic for almost a month now and I have these ladies wrapped around my little finger. My food is served to me in a silver bowl, I get to see all the animals come and go, while getting all the attention from their owners. Then at night I get to rule the clinic like the king kitty I am. I am so happy to be at Island Animal Clinic!” -Bert

As the Summer days get longer and hotter, we'd like to remind our clients and visitors the importance of keeping your pets cool and hydrated during the daytime. Hyperthermia can be a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical treatment. Short-nosed breeds are at a higher risk of developing heatstroke along with long-coat breeds. Some conditions that can lead to heat stroke include:
-Leaving a dog in a vehicle with inadequate ventilation in hot summer weather.
- When an animal is left outdoors without adequate shade or water.
-Exercising during hot/humid weather.
Some of the first signs of hyperthermia include appearing distressed/restless, excessive panting, drooling large amounts of saliva, and gums turning bright red or blue/purple. If you notice these symptoms in your pet, it's important to move them to a cool, shaded environment and apply wet towels to the armpits, groin, as well as neck area, and head to the closest animal clinic in your area. Be careful to not overcool your pet, the normal body temperature of a dog is 101.5-102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not force water into your pet's mouth, make sure your pet is alert and has an interest in drinking. For more information regarding Heat Stroke First Aid, click on the link provided below.

Although most residents are familiar with the risks coyotes pose to our pets on this island, many visitors and newcomers are unaware of this danger. Sadly, many pets are taken or severely injured by the coyotes that inhabit the area. Below is a list of things you can do to help prevent your pet from getting attacked, although some may be inconvenient or take more time, we highly recommend these things.
