Misty Rose Farm - Cecil County

Misty Rose Farm - Cecil County Raising multi-purpose sheep in Cecil County, MD. Livestock - Fleeces - Meat - Pelts - Consultation.

Allison has been raising sheep since 1995 and started a purebred Romney flock in 1999. All Romneys are registered with the American Romney Breeders Association. We also raise Natural Colored Long Wools (Romney sire on crossbred ewes) registrable with the Natural Colored Wool Growers Association. We aim to produce well-rounded sheep that will excel in and out if the show ring. Show/breeding stock,

fleece producers/pets, raw fleece, pelts, and meats available (although all limited as we run a fairly small flock).

The difference between lamb and mutton can be a little confusing. In the US, we call meat from young sheep lamb and meat from older sheep mutton. Lamb is more tender and has a milder flavor, and mutton is less tender with a stronger flavor. Lamb is great on the grill or cooked with any fast, high-heat method. Mutton needs to be cooked low and slow. It is usually braised or stewed, and benefits from lots of spices and marinades.

I read that in some parts of the world, mutton includes goat meat, but in the US, it is typically only sheep.

Our Story

We fell in love with the Romney breed due to their gentle nature and adorable faces. Romneys are a dual purpose breed with both high quality fleeces and carcasses. They are known to have hooves that are resistant to foot rot and fleeces that remain healthy even in harsh weather, two very desirable traits. Go to http://americanromney.org/about-romneys/ to learn more about the Romney breed. Our sheep have won us many Champion and Supreme Champion titles and have been involved in the community. They have been used in a leasing program in which youth are able to lease lambs to show in the local 4-H fairs, and they have also participated in church plays, petting zoos and have even visited nursing homes.
