Rescues depend on the compassion and good heartedness of people. People who find a kitten or a sick cat and do something. They step up until rescues can help. When we encounter situations where people are cruel, thoughtless, heartless, it keeps us up at night with worry. We do our best to help as many people as quickly as we can. But in the end, it is people who truly care, who go above and beyond to keep Kitties safe until we can help that are hero’s. We had a situation just recently that haunts. We were contacted because someone had a friendly kitten on their porch. She left the kitten outside even though the kitten was trying to come in the house, but went to the neighbors a distance away to see if it was theirs. Surprisingly there was another kitten on their porch. The neighbor said the kitten was not his. She got in her car to leave and the baby jumped in seeking rescue. Rather than bring the kitten home to put it with the other kitten, and bring both safely inside, she put the kitten out in the cold and drove away. The weather was foul, cold, and rainy. We convinced her to bring the kitten on her porch inside and secure the baby. We asked her to go get the other kitten. Sadly, when she went to the neighbors, they told her the kitten was no longer there. It was a very playful and happy kitten. Certainly not used to being outside. I am sure it was there, hiding as it had been there for a day or two already. Did anyone think to put food out for the lost kitten? To induce the kitten to come back? Did anyone think to bring the kitten in from the cold and make sure it was safe until we could come? I was told there are coyotes and foxes, and hawks and eagles. So, knowing this, if you had the kitten in your car, why would you put it back outside? We are all busy, we are all stressed, but the life of that kitten matters. We did get the first kitten right away and stopped at the other house. We gave the owner food to put out for the kitten encouraged them to look even though he told me he had looked for the other kitten, but the kitten was gone. I truly don’t believe anyone searched very much because in their eyes, the life of one baby kitten truly does not seem to matter. The little girl rescued is adorable. She sleeps in bed with me and follows me around, playing with the other kittens. I wish the same for the lost kitten. We have reached out for help as best we can, but I fear the kitten is gone. Shame on these people. How would they feel to be cold, lost, and hungry. This kitten haunts me. Please be a hero.
