Owner Surrenders
SCCAC is at capacity due to a large number of cruelty/neglect, confined abandonment/cruelty animals in our care and an increase in stray dogs.
At this time, we are unable to accept same-day owner surrenders or dogs and cats.
We are scheduling out owner surrenders 3-6 weeks depending on spay/neuter, size, behavior and medical concerns, and current vaccine status. (We only have 3 kennels for dogs in the 90+ lbs range.)
If you are at the point where you are even remotely considering rehoming your pet:
⏰ “I don’t have enough time.”
There are definitely cases where this is true. Especially with dogs left unattended for 12 hours or more or only being visited once a day for a small period of care.
Often, this feeling of not having enough time is related to a behavior concern. If that is the case, we have quite a few behavior articles, YouTube videos and resources available to help you.
💸 “I can’t afford to care for my pet.”
If money is tight, the SCCAC Community Animal Resources and Essential Supplies (CARES) Program can provide temporary support with food and some daily care items. The availability of these items is solely dependent on community donations of food, litter, and other supplies. Eligibility for this program is contingent on getting dogs up-to-date on their license and not acquiring additional pets for 6 months.
🏘️🏡 “I’m being evicted.”
If you are behind in rent or in financial crisis or insecure housing situation, please reach out to us. There may be resources we can point you to, rescues that could assist, solutions you may not have thought of. Do not wait until the day before the eviction court order goes into effect. We cannot accept same-day surrenders.
🌪️🔥🏥 ⚖️ No Disaster Plan
If you have pets, please have a discussion and agreed upon plan with a friend or family member on who could care for your pet while you are stranded out of town, in the hospital, if you couldn’t stay in your home, or if you need advanced medical care. If you are making choices that could end up with time away due to legal issues, you should also be having this conversation.
🚫 The Serious Stuff
If your dog has a bite history or you know they are unsafe around children and other animals, behavioral euthanasia may be the appropriate choice. This is a tough decision and none of us at SCCAC take this lightly, but we can help provide guidance. Please consider the safety of your community prior to rehoming.
Please remember abandoning an animal is a crime, as is misreporting your animal as a found stray.
Our mission is to create safe, humane communities and do our best to keep pets with the families that love them. We can’t meet this goal without communication and community support. Reach us by email at [email protected]
Thank you to all who donate to our CARES pet food pantry as part of this mission.
