To the gentleman who abandoned his senior dog at our facility:

You arrived with a dog who has clearly known love. He is gentle, trusting, and calm—even as he suffers from a massive stomach tumor and the confusion of being left behind.

Instead of asking for help, you threw him into the bushes outside our facility. You left him there with a bag, a leash, and a container of food. You briefly spoke with our office clerk, but you never told us what you needed. You didn’t explain. You just tossed him from your truck and left.

Please know this: we will take care of him. He is safe now. He will be treated with the kindness, dignity, and compassion that every living being deserves—especially in their final days. But that will not stop us from prosecuting you to the fullest extent we can. Because what you did to him, is completely inexcusable.

If you were overwhelmed or felt you had no options—we wish you had said something. Help exists. There are people and organizations that will listen. Abandonment, especially like this, is not the answer.

To anyone reading this: if you are struggling to care for your pet, please don’t walk away in silence. Reach out. We are here to help when we can. And when we can't, we will do our best to guide you to someone who can.

He deserved better. All animals do.

Did You Know?

Since way back in 1919, dog licenses are required for all dogs in Michigan! Yup! It’s still a thing 🐶

When you visit our office, you can take a look at our License Showcase and see all the licenses going back to 1922! (We are currently missing 1920, 1921, 1924, 1931-35, 1958, 1970 for you antique and garage sale hunters!)

Top 5 Dog License Confusions:

1. A rabies tag from your vet IS NOT a license. It makes the jingle jingle noise. That’s it. Just bling 💍

2. Animal Control is an authorized seller of licenses. Treasury oversees licenses and send out your renewal notices, processes portal and mail-in renewals, and runs the email helpline at [email protected]

They’re pretty great! 🐶

3. A dog license should be worn on the dog at all times unless hunting or participating in competition. It’s their legal ID, like your car’s registration.

4. St. Clair County, licenses are scheduled to be valid for the duration of the rabies vaccine. To make sure you get the full length of your 1-year or 3-year license, get your dog licensed within 30 days of receiving their rabies vaccine.

5. We always encourage permanent identification (microchipping) as well so we can get a dog home ASAP if they are wandering without a collar. All shelters and vets have microchip scanners, and SCCAC has gifted scanners to Clay Township PD, Yale PD, Marysville PD, City of Port Huron PD, Harsen’s Island FD, with more locations to come!

BUT WHAT IS THE POINT?

We promise there are benefits to licensing other than not getting a misdemeanor!

🐾 A license is identification that tells Animal Control, law enforcement and finders where the dog belongs if they are off their property by calling SCCAC or Central Dispatch Non-Emergency with the license number.

🐾 Licenses also let you have access to some community dog partks, let you cross the border, and visit other dog-friendly locations.

🐾 Knowing where dogs live helps us notify people in an area if a number of dogs with a high-risk contagion like parvovirus or distemper have come in from their area.

🐾 A license protects you as the owner is your dog is taken or there is a custody conflict.

Remember: To get a license, you will need a copy of the most recent rabies vaccination certificate with the veterinarian’s signature. (Not the invoice receipt with the charges for the visit.)

Around midnight on September 17th, a beautiful dog was found at the intersection of Michigan & Collard Ave after what appears to have been a heartbreaking accident with a vehicle.

She’s now safe and receiving emergency care at an animal hospital. We’ve named her Shirley while we search for her family. 💔

She is microchipped, but unfortunately, the chip is not registered, so we currently have no way of contacting her owners. She is not available for adoption, as our goal is to reunite her with her family.

If you recognize her or know who she belongs to, please contact us ASAP:

At 7pm last night, an individual in a red truck abandoned kittens in a box on the east-facing side of our building.

(Let’s be real. If you are dodging cameras, you know what you’re doing is wrong.)

This box hardly had any airholes.

The three kittens spent over 15 hours in that box and 3 hours baking in direct sunlight. Urination created an additional humidity factor.

Thankfully, a community service worker who worked yesterday knew the box wasnt there yesterday when she left and checked to see what it was.

It was over 103 degrees in that box.

The kittens are getting treatment for heat exhaustion and dehydration. We are cautiously optimistic they were found in time and will recover.

This is THE SECOND ABANDONMENT CASE this month, where a cat was abandoned in an obscure area on our property.

In the case of the sweet orange tabby boy abandoned over Labor Day weekend, he wasn’t found for three whole days— dehydrated, heat sickness, and suffered seizures for two days after he was found until we got his fluids and electrolytes balanced. We were able to identify the people who dumped him and left him in such an awful state.

Please do not abandon animals.

Please do not abandon animals in obscure areas hoping they get found.

Do not acquire animals if you are unable to care for them or house them. Or if your lease/landlord/spouse/partner/parent says you can’t have them.

If you cannot find resources to get your pet spayed or neutered and your pet produced babies, call for assistance as soon as possible so we can plan to take the little ones in around eight weeks of age.

If you may be facing eviction or having difficulty finding housing with your pet, please call as soon as possible for resources on self-rehoming and ways we can help.

If you are making choices that have the consequence of correction center stays, have a back up plan for your pet if you go away for a minute.
