🚨 THEY’VE BEEN WAITING TOO LONG. 🚨

Our long-stay dogs have watched people walk by day after day — tails wagging, hearts hopeful.
They are overlooked, not unlovable.

🐶 Different ages.
🐶 Different sizes.
🐶 Same dream: a forever home.

These dogs know what it means to wait — and they’ll never stop being grateful to the person who chooses them.

Tomorrow is the big night! If you are going out to a fancy gala or barn party, having a few friends over, or just spending quality time with family, we wish you a Happy New Year!

Remember December 20-Jan 2 is when hospitals and urgent cares report the most in-home, known dog/family dog bites.

😠👊🏻 No Fighting, No Biting!
Kids under 10 live in “Doggy Land” because of their height. Their face is right at dog face level. They have a tough time recognizing human facial moments for emotion like the difference between a real smile and a fake polite one. Activities like puzzles and board games at the kitchen table put kids in Grown Up Land. Not wandering around with people food in Doggy Land is a good idea, too. Kids are most likely to be bitten in the face and hands. Seniors 65+ and people who move differently are more likely to get bit on hands, arms, ankles, and calves. If your dog or cat seems stressed by all the interaction, give them one-one time. See our Christmas Eve post for more ideas!

🎉🥳🎊 It’s loud in the clurb! 🎉🥳🎊
Pay attention to dogs and cats with noise phobias! Kazoos, fireworks , vuvuzelas, fun Uncle Matt’s Bavarian horn — those are a lot. Plan ahead to put pooch in a room with an enrichment item around 11:30.

🎩 All must pass dress code & show ID: 🪪
- Make sure your dog is wearing her collar a license, or at least with an ID tag or your number written in sharpie on a nylon collar.
- It’s not too late to Microchip! And if your dog is microchipped, verify your contact info is correct by going to the microchip manufacturer’s website.

Pay attention to the door!

If everyone is going in and out a door or gate, it may be a good idea for dogs and cats to have their own room to chill. Or having you dog on a leash clipped to you belt loop. (Leash reactivity in chaotic environments is weird, so if you use this method, monitor for stress.

From all of us to all of you, SCCAC Staff and volunteers wish you a Happy New Year!

🕊️ Attempting to Locate Owner – Marysville 🕊️

St. Clair County Animal Control is seeking to identify the owner of a dog that was tragically struck by a vehicle today in Marysville near 18th Street & Range Road.

Description:

• Medium-sized dog
• Dark grey and white
• No collar

The dog was found deceased at the scene. A compassionate community member remained with him and placed an orange cone nearby to ensure he was not alone.

The finder of this dog does have a photo for identification purposes, but we will not be posting it.

If you believe this may be your dog or recognize the description, please contact our office so we may assist and provide additional information.

This beloved pet mattered, and though its life was cut short, they will be forever in our hearts. 🤍

Please share to help reunite them with their family.

Good Afternoon, St. Clair County!
There has been some misinformation that has gotten some folks confused from some social media pages — such silliness!🐒

To all current volunteers, volunteers going through onboarding, and potential future volunteers:

1. There are no leadership changes at Animal Control whatsoever. 🏆🏆🏆
We are still hiring part-time and casual
Animal Care Technicians after it really dawned on some folks being an ACT is so much more than kitten cuddles and pooch smooches and private practice vet care or doggy daycare might be a better fit.

So support staff is still being built up, but there aren’t any leadership changes.
We think the rumor about a leadership change may have originated because SCC County Administrator Karry Hepting has moved on to her well-deserved retirement. Thomas Hull, Deputy Administrator, will be assuming her role.

Mr. Hull was assigned oversight of our department last January and has been a valued advocate and support for our department over the past year. We are so thankful for his presence and guidance!

🙌🐶🐱 SCCAC Volunteers, You have received a message in the Volunteer Group, a text or email from us if you are all officially an SCCAC volunteers. 🐱🐶🙌

We do not have a mutual aid agreement with any other organization regarding daily-to-day volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer, email our official address for volunteer communications and onboarding at [email protected] and our Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch within a day or two. She’s a volunteer, too, so please be patient during the holidays 🩷

If you applied to be a volunteer before August when we were really able to go paperless with our onboarding, it doesn’t hurt to send an email.

3. All official communication about volunteering with SCCAC will come from the volunteer group page, the sccacvolunteers@gmail account, or a text from our Volunteer Coordinator or a designated staff member 💬🐶🐱

4. We are all about spreading the love! If you are a 501(c)3 non-profit with your own liability coverage and you’d like to partner on an activity or project, please have a member of your board reach out to [email protected]

We do require a copy of your determination letter, board members and bylaws, and proof of liability coverage to enter into a Mutual Aid Agreement (MAA) or Memorandom of Understanding (MOU).

Groups doing a day of service through their employer can be arranged rather quickly usually the employer has to verify you can sign a liability waiver.)

Thank you for helping us maintain clear messaging on how to become a volunteer!

Hi, Everyone!

All of the dogs and cats (and bunnies!) at the shelter are wishing everyone a SAFE and happy Christmas Eve and Christmas!

Remember:

🐶 Great Aunt Angus Is A Stranger!

You have known her your whole life, but remember our nearest and dearest may have never visited your home. The most common bites happen to people who move differently, kiddos under 10, and folks over 65.

🐶🐱 Keep Faces out of Faces!

Most dogs and cats see hugs as restraint and kisses as invasions of their personal space. Even if they tolerate it, remember No Faces in Faces for photos, hugs, or kisses.

🐶🐱 Don’t Punish A Growl

A grumble or growl, lip-lift or snarl, hiss or swat are important communications from dogs or cats! They mean a dog (or cat!) is asking for space. This communication means, “Please stop! Back up!” Let’s advocate for pooch and be the grownup that they can rely on. Help them know they are being heard by making sure others give them space and so they don’t think they have to escalate.

🐶🐱 Winter Wear Is Scary!

Dogs and cats don’t really understand all the ways we can change our body shape/silhouette. Even well-known visitors can seem completely unknown in puffy coats, hats, boots with the fur 😉

🎄Success Tips!🎄

🎁 A rest area (see examples of success stations below!) away from festivities

🎁 Planned walks, sniffari, or “read to relax” time with their favorite person to take a break

🎁 Chew to soothe (frozen Kongs, cheezy bones) or liki-mat — for dogs or cats!

🎁 Choice to leave, permission to say no, extra hidey-spots and elevated space.

The next ten days are when the most in-home family dog bites and cat swipes happen. So don’t invite a bite this holiday 🎄

🩷,
Everyone at SCCAC
