Hello Halfmoon Friends! Bear with me as this will likely be a long post 😊 – Dr. Amy Olson

We want to share some news with you all – Dr. Jeff Miller will be retiring from day-to-day appointments here at the end of the year. He states he’s “not really retiring” as he will still cover for emergency surgeries and the like when he is available – but he is ready to stop the day appointment coverage and take a little time for himself and his family.

This is a bittersweet time for us all as he has been a wonderful leader, mentor, colleague, employer, veterinarian, and friend to all of us in this community. I personally am so blessed to be able to call him mentor, colleague, and friend.

There is a statue on the veterinary medicine campus at Iowa State University that has become a symbol internationally for veterinary medicine. This statue is called “The Gentle Doctor” and was created by artist Christian Petersen in the 1930’s. The statue is one of a veterinarian holding a small puppy in his hands with the mother dog looking fondly up at the man. The man’s hands are enlarged carefully and gently holding the small sick pup showing the strength in the human animal bond as well as a veterinarian’s most powerful tool – one’s hands. His feet are also larger in scale to show the strength of being on one’s feet all day long. At Iowa State I would walk by this statue often, not fully understanding the meaning behind the heroic size nor the adoration of the mother dog. Coming here and working for Dr. Jeffery Miller for over five years – I now understand this statue and its symbolism fully. Dr. Miller is the full embodiment of “The Gentle Doctor”. The lives he has cared for – the “sick puppy”, the adoring patients - the “mother dog” – many times, quite literally a mother dog. The strength of his care and his gentle spirit – he is heroic, and larger than life. He is “The Gentle Doctor”.

I have been blessed to have learned so very much from him, to have worked with him and now to carry on his legacy. Earlier this year we made plans for this transition, and I assumed ownership in June. I am blessed and so very humbled to be able to keep Halfmoon Valley Animal Hospital privately and locally owned. We all believe in keeping the consistency of service, affordability, and care the same. We never made a big announcement as we wanted everything to just carry on as normal and keep on caring for pets. Neither of our ego’s needed it. Now, with this transition – I needed to at least share how special and wonderful Dr. Miller is – well, you all already know that. 🥰

Since he’s “not really retiring” he doesn’t want us to throw a reception nor a party for him, but please do post well wishes here or feel free to send a card or a note to the hospital. We will make sure he receives them. If you drop a photo or a comment here, I will compile these into a printed book for him when the comments settle down. I’m sure there will be many. :) ❤️

Thank you, Dr. Miller, for creating Halfmoon Valley Animal Hospital. Thank you for employing and empowering wonderful people to help care for beautiful animals. Thank you for the mentorship, the collaboration and the knowledge you have shared. Thank you for caring for pets, for families, and for our community. You will be greatly missed in the day to day, and I am so very thankful that you “are not really retiring.” You and I both know I will be calling you – probably more often than you would like.

To my real-life Gentle Doctor – thank you.

☃️ We hope everyone has been staying cozy and warm with this cold weather! ❄️

Here's a few pictures from the "Happenings at Halfmoon". 🥰

This week has been busy with post surgery snuggles, bringing in new babies, and adorable pets in adorable holiday costumes. 🐶 🐱

Did you also see the posts from Centre County PAWS and Pet Recovery of Centre County about that adorable grey kitten? A good samaritan brought her into us this week. We checked for a microchip (none!), checked her Feline Leukemia Virus and Immunodeficiency Virus status (both negative! 🥳), and treated her upper respiratory infection. In conversation with our friends at PAWS, we found out she likely had a sibling that was found in the same area. What a blessing to be able to reunite these two sweet kittens! Feel free to contact PAWS regarding their adoption - how neat would it be if both became Halfmoon Valley Healthy Pets - together, forever! ❤️

In these seasons of gratitude we are so thankful for each of you. Thank you for trusting us with the care of your beloved pets. We are grateful and blessed. 🥰

🥳Happy Birthday! 🐶 This handsome boy's birthday wish was to stop in to his favorite place - the vet! 🤩 We were so overjoyed to see him and love that he loves it at Halfmoon Valley Animal Hospital. We had to have him wear a birthday crown for a picture.
Hugs, treats and birthday snuggles! He's definitely a Halfmoon Valley Healthy Pet!

Happy Sunday to our Halfmoon Valley Healthy Pets & Friends! ❤️
Today, we want to share a healthy pet success story.
Meet Geno! 🐶
When we first started seeing this little man he had to be fully sedated for his examinations and care as he would try to hurt himself and anyone around him. We then thought it was a great day when we could handle him with just his muzzle. Today, we enjoy his high-fives and respect his boundaries with his choice for cooperative care. This success story is due to the dedication in time and care from his owner, his technician of choice Shaina, and his doctor Dr. Menapace. They worked together for happy visits, behavioral consults and medications, as well as finding that a large part of his "out-bursts" were secondary to untreated pain. Geno now comes in monthly for his Librela injection for his pain and takes other medications by mouth for his comfort at home. Treats and high-fives for Geno and huge kudos to his family and health-care team for helping him to become a Halfmoon Valley Healthy Pet.
