HUGE congratulations to Blaire Lewis for her accomplishments at the PA District V show held in Centre Co. Blaire placed 1st in Mini Jumping and 4th in Mini trail with her horse‘Silver’. And, Blaire placed 2nd in beginner walk jog horsemanship and 3rd in beginner walk jog western pleasure with ‘PSU Scorin For You’, owned by Ashley Brown. 🚨 The EPRHA Fire Cracker Classic was a success for team SMPH!

🏆 Congratulations to Suzanne Myers and our home bred 3yo mare Trashed by Six! The team took 5th in the L4 and L2 Developing Futurity adding over $600 to this mares's LTE!! We are so excited to see how this team progresses in the other major futurities this year!

💔I’m having a very difficult time putting into words how to express my sentiments on behalf of Brant Performance Horses and Priest Performance Horses. Yesterday the utmost in tragedy struck when a fire devastated their barn. In an instant, they and their dedicated teams lost everything: they lost their livelihood, their equipment and from what I’m learning, nearly 100 horses housed in the barn.

💔The unimaginable emotional toll they are now struggling with is beyond comprehension. I knew Eric when he worked for Dutch Chapman, and I’m not surprised that he tried to save as many horses as he could, and is now in the burn unit at an Ohio hospital. I’m sure Brandon was right there with him in their attempts to do whatever they could to save the horses.

💔 I force myself to think what it would be like if this happened to our facility, because it makes me pray harder that God will heel the hearts and minds of everyone involved. Our hearts and continuous prayers go out to Eric, Brandon, Cathy Calendine Brant, their teams, and the owners of each and every horse that was lost.

💔I met Brandon at a horse show in Lexington when we were stalled next to him. He didn’t know me, but enthusiastically introduced himself to me and my team. Since then we’ve taken horses to ride with Brandon and have come to know he and his wife as some of the most sincere, hardworking and giving people in the industry. It’s time for us to give back.

🏆Congratulations to Suzanne Myers riding TRASHED BY SIX - This pair won the Green Horse both Saturday and Sunday marking a 70 and 70.5 just cruising around. What's even more is this was the first show for this 3yo by Inferno Sixty Six. TRASHED BY SIX, aka Prada is our homegrown filly out of our Smart Spook mare, Ready Spook. Lot's of great things ahead for this duo!

🏆Congratulatinos to Brooke Myers riding JUICE CHEX N marking a FAT 73.5 and placing first in the Non-Pro and Intermediate Non-Pro on Sunday!

🏆Congratulations to Brianna Wolfe riding BIGSTARSDONTSPOOK for owner Michelle Irvin - this pair placed 2nd in the Rookie Pro on Sunday.

As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of our foals, let's delve into the qualities that define a great reining horse. First, a great reining prospect must have excellent conformation for the job of reining, and this comes from careful consideration of the genetics that will produce the offspring. With that foundation, you will find that the competitive reining horse will display great athleticism, will be highly intelligent with a willingness to work, and display a natural drive to perform his job. A finished reining horse will perform the maneuvers of the reining pattern with finesse and excellent precision and be willfully guided without displaying resistance of any kind.

This time of year is exciting for many reasons. Christmas is upon us and we are all abuzz with the festivities of the holiday season. But in the thick of things, at SMPH we are also excited for another reason - it’s foaling season for our reining horses!

Did you know that, on average, a reining mare carries her foal for approximately 340 days? We like to have our foals born between January and March each year so they will be stout and mature in their 2yo year and ready to begin their training.

Reining foals are known for their intelligence, agility, and excellent trainability. We carefully select sires with superior genetics to complement our broodmares and enhance desirable traits for the discipline of reining. It's fascinating to experience how each of our foals come through the training program and to compare foals of different crosses from year to year.

The anticipation of a foal's arrival is preceded by meticulous care, and thoughtful preparation. Every effort must be made to ensure that the mare delivers without complications, and that foal arrives safely and stays in good health. A lot of thought goes into the nutrition plan and veterinary care of our mares and foals to ensure the health and well-being of both.

It’s exciting these days for sure! We are entering the countdown to the arrival of our first foal, due January 23rd!
