A big thank you to everyone who came out to help with Charley’s training session! Here’s a p*ek at some of the skills we focused on:

• Down While in Motion: Charley practiced staying calm and responsive, even while on the move—a great step toward better impulse control.
• Stay & Recall: We reinforced these foundational commands to improve consistency and reliability. Charley did amazing, and so did all the other pups!
• Calm Walks Past Other Dogs in Tight Spaces: Charley worked on calmly passing other dogs even in close quarters, building confidence and focus around distractions.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the dog beach in New Smyrna Beach this morning for our pop-up group event! We focused on conditioning good habits, with Charley practicing calm behavior as he passed other dogs on his harness. He’s making excellent progress transitioning from a slip collar, and the rest of the dogs and their owners did a fantastic job as well!

Huge thanks to everyone who came out to the last TM Canine Community Event! We kicked off with a mock CGC test, and wow – these pups showed their skills! 👏 It was great to see everyone learning together and noting areas to focus on for next time.

After the test, we enjoyed a short but powerful pack walk, practicing our down and stay commands as we climbed a hill to an amazing view. 🌄

🐾 Let’s Talk Nosework! 🐾

Scent work (or “nosework”) is one of the most natural and rewarding activities for dogs. Every dog, regardless of breed, has the ability to use their nose to solve problems and track scents. While some breeds may excel naturally, all dogs can learn and thrive in scent detection because it taps into their instincts!

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of training dogs for vital tasks such as drug detection, bomb detection, and agricultural work like identifying diseases in crops. My experience in these fields has been featured in the Washington Post, news clips from Fort Pierce, and articles on the University of Florida’s website. Some of my proudest moments were training dogs to help detect citrus diseases that have devastated Florida’s groves as alot of you may have noticed over the years.

🎃 Expose Your Dog to Halloween Displays for Better Behavior! 🐾

Taking your dog to stores like Spirit Halloween, Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Big Lots isn’t just for spooky fun—it’s a great training opportunity! Here’s why:

1. Desensitization: Halloween decorations can be scary for dogs—creepy sounds, moving figures, and flashing lights. Exposing your pup to these things in a controlled environment helps desensitize them to new and unusual experiences.
2. Confidence Building: New surroundings and sensory experiences can boost your dog’s confidence, helping them become more adaptable and calm in everyday life.
3. Impulse Control: Practicing commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “leave it” in distracting environments improves your dog’s ability to focus on you, even when spooky things are happening around them!
4. Socialization: These stores are great for socializing with people and other pets, teaching your dog how to behave around crowds and new settings.

🛑 Reminder: Always be respectful of other shoppers. Give people space and ensure your dog stays under control at all times to create a positive experience for everyone!

🐾 Hurricane Preparedness for You and Your Pup! 🐾

As we prepare for the potential hurricane, keeping our dogs safe and comfortable is a top priority. 🌀 Here are some essential tips to help you and your dog get ready:

🌧️ Storm Potty Training Tips:
- Create an Indoor Potty Area: Set up a designated indoor potty spot for your dog in case going outside isn't safe. Use p*e pads, artificial grass mats, or even pieces of sod to mimic the outdoors and make it easier for your dog to adapt.

- Leash Your Dog Indoors: If your dog is hesitant to use indoor pads or sod, walk them to the spot on a leash as you would during outdoor potty breaks.

- Stick to a Routine: Try to maintain a consistent feeding and bathroom schedule. This helps reduce anxiety and accidents during the storm.

🐕 Safety Tips for Your Dog:
- Ensure Updated Identification: Make sure your dog is wearing a collar with updated ID tags, and confirm their microchip info is current in case of separation.

- Prepare a Pet Emergency Kit: Include:
- 3-5 days of food and water
- Medication and medical records
- Collar, leash, harness
- Comfort items (blanket, toy)
- Waste bags, p*e pads, or sod
- A recent photo of your dog in case they go missing

- Set Up a Safe Space: Create a calm, secure area in your home where your dog can retreat, especially if they’re anxious about loud storm sounds.

🔊 Calming Your Dog’s Anxiety:
- Play White Noise or Calming Music: Drown out storm sounds with soft music or white noise to help keep your dog relaxed.

- Try a ThunderShirt or Pressure Wrap: These can help dogs feel more secure by applying gentle pressure to reduce anxiety.

- Stay Calm and Reassuring: Your dog can pick up on your emotions, so remain calm and offer treats and soothing pets to help them stay at ease.

🍖 Use Food to Keep Your Dog Busy During the Storm:
- Frozen Kong: Stuff a Kong toy with wet food, peanut butter, or yogurt mixed with kibble, and freeze it. This will keep your dog busy for a while, helping to distract them from the storm.

- Puzzle Feeders or Slow Feed Bowls: Use your dog’s regular food in a puzzle feeder or slow feed bowl to engage their brain and keep them focused on something other than the storm.

- Treat-Dispensing Toys: Toys like the Bob-A-Lot or Snuffle Mats can be filled with kibble or treats, encouraging your dog to work for their food and stay mentally engaged.

- Hide and Seek with Treats: Hide small portions of your dog’s kibble or treats around the house for them to find. This fun game can provide mental stimulation and help take their mind off the noise outside.

- LickiMats: Spread a thin layer of peanut butter, canned pumpkin, or wet food on a LickiMat to provide a soothing, lickable treat that can calm anxiety.

🏡 If You Need to Evacuate:
- Find Pet-Friendly Shelters: Ensure your evacuation plan includes pet-friendly shelters or hotels. Call ahead to confirm their pet policy.

- Crate Your Dog for Transport: When evacuating, transport your dog in a secure crate or carrier to keep them safe during the journey.

⚠️ Before the Storm Hits:
- Take a Long Walk: Try to burn off some of your dog’s energy before the storm arrives to help them stay calm.

- Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in dog toys, beds, and any outdoor items that could blow away or cause harm.

- Avoid Floodwaters: After the storm, keep your dog away from standing water, which can contain dangerous debris or chemicals.

Stay safe, and remember your dog’s well-being is just as important as your own! 🐶💙
