As you may be aware, HHS has taken into our care over 30 animals from a mobile home fire in Port Orange that occurred last week. All of these animals require medications, veterinary procedures, special foods, and special attention. These animals are not currently available for adoption and are under medical treatment.
The cost of the antibiotics alone for 30 animals is more than you would ever imagine. Eye meds are also very expensive, and nearly every animal requires these meds as well. We have already utilized thousands of dollars of medications and dedicated hundreds of hours to these animals.
The dog shown below cannot use its hind legs and will need a wheelchair device to get around. Another major expense.
We have an Emergency Medical Fund (EMF) to purchase items that the public cannot donate, such as antibiotics and vaccines. If you consider donating to this fund, we would be very appreciative. The link to donate is https://www.halifaxhumanesociety.org/donate and notate at the end of the form that your donation is specifically for the EMF. Or donate using the Facebook donate button. We thank you for your kindness and generosity in advance.

Max walks on treadmill
Max walks on treadmill with my husband. He once walked over a mile on the treadmill. (Max, not my husband.)
When our Golden Lab, Max was just 5-months old he was quite a handful. He came to us as a rescue from a loving home that could no longer have him in their rental house. I agreed to take Max in and find him a home. It’s now 5-years later and Max is our baby forever.
Max is pretty smart. He knows the basic variety of commands like sit, stay, shake, down, etc. But he also knows how to moon walk and walk on a treadmill. Sometimes he jumps on the treadmill and barks as if to say, “Hey mom, I want to walk!” He has walked as long as an hour on the treadmill which is unusual for a dog.
I learned that Max was treat motivated so I trained him with pieces of kibble. Not a lot, just a piece or two when he did as he was told. Max is still learning everyday. My husband takes Max to his office frequently and Max is one of the presenters at the Halifax Humane Society’s Summer Camp. He loves getting petted and showing off for the kids.
My training recommendation is patience. It takes time for a dog to learn new commands. Practice is also required to reinforce the training commands. Your dog wants to work for you so let them. Even older dogs still like to play and go for a walk. Give your pet the time and attention they require and they will pay it back to you tenfold.
If you are serious about training your dog, you need to be trained as to how to train first. Attending a training class is great idea. In our area, the Obedience Club of Daytona and the Halifax Humane Society both offer beginner classes for a very nominal fee. OBOD also offers advanced classes if you want to take your dog to the next level. Their website is http://www.dogobediencedaytonabeach.com/ The Halifax Humane Society offers a discount if your dog was adopted from HHS. Their website is http://www.halifaxhumanesociety.org/dog-obedience-training/index
Both organizations use the reward system of training and a clicker. A clicker is a small non-electronic device that makes a click noise when pressed. When the dog performs as desired you click and then reward. The dog will associate the click noise with getting a reward and perform to just the clicker overtime.
Too many times people give up on a new pet. They expect the pet to know what to do, especially if they adopt an older dog. You must give a dog and a cat for that matter, time to acclimate to a new home, new people, new surroundings. Don’t rush and don’t expect too much too soon. It will take time, so if you don’t want to make the time investment, get a fish and let someone else take care of the dogs and cats. :)
