It’s K9 Veteran’s Day!
Did you know that March 13, 1942 marks the birthday of the Army K9 Corps? The most famous dog is Rin-Tin Tin, a German war dog found in France in 1918. He was brought back to the US, and became the first animal movie star when he starred in the silent film “The Man from Hell’s River” and made the barely-known German Shepherd breed famous across the US.
After World War I, training dogs for military purposes mostly came to an end. In 1942, the American Kennel Association worked alongside Dogs for Defense to bring the practice back. Some of the breeds included German Shepherds, Belgian Sheep Dogs, Dobermans, Collies, Siberian Huskies, Malumutes and Eskimo dogs and they were trained for 8-12 weeks in basic obedience, as well as sentry, scout and patrol, messenger, or mine detection.
Today, the most common breeds we see in military work are German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds, and Belgian Malinois. We may occasionally see retrievers for scent work.
