The Ten Myths of Canine Behavior
Myth #10: My dog growled at me. I need to punish the growl.
One of the most important behaviors to reinforce rather than punish in dogs is growling. Growling serves as information, signaling that a dog feels uncomfortable in a situation. It is not an act of aggression but a form of communication, and for that, we should be grateful. We can address growling constructively by identifying and avoiding the actions that triggered it. Punishing a growl risk suppressing this warning signal, potentially leading to a bite without any preceding warning.

Private lesson with Penny! She is a rescue from the Mason County hoarding situation. Despite her rough start, she is incredibly sweet and eager to learn. We worked on the basics with a focus on loose leash walking. Penny and her mom are a great team! 💫

IF YOUR DOG IS A "PICKY EATER" OR REFUSES FOOD SOMETIMES . . . it's time to investigate!

🤕 A dog that’s a picky eater with meals at home is usually free-fed or has an underlying medical issue/pain that’s possibly undiagnosed.

🥘 Free-fed dogs are the most common cause of “picky eater” labels.

❌ All dogs must eat, so don’t just live with “my dog is picky”. That’s not a good way to go!

❌ 🧀🥓 Stop adding all the things to your dog’s food to “try to get him to eat”! You’re perpetuating the problem!

🕣 If you play tough love and get her on a schedule she’ll start to eat.

HOW TO PUT YOUR DOG ON A FEEDING SCHEDULE

✅ Put food down in properly measured amount.

✅ Give a few minutes for him to start eating.

✅ If she doesn’t start, pick up bowl within 5 minutes

✅ If he eats some but then walks away, take bowl up as soon as he walks away.

✅ Next meal is when you put bowl back down.

✅ After 2-3 days of this your dog will eat unless something is wrong.

🧑🏻‍⚕️🏥 If you do the above and you don’t see results, go see your veterinarian. A dog that is not 💯 healthy can be a picky eater! Explore that avenue even if things seem “fine”.

WHAT ABOUT REFUSING FOOD OUTSIDE AND/OR DURING TRAINING?

😣 The most common reason for picky eating/refusing food when in a new situation and/or during training is stress!

🧐 Re-evaluate the situation, go to a less stressful environment and work up to the distractions.
