In the 3 months Kuma has been at the shelter, he’s lost over 15 pounds. His body and spirit are telling us what we already know: Kuma doesn’t belong here. This sweet, 8-year-old Akita is struggling, and we’re desperate to get him into a loving foster or adoptive home.

Today, we took Kuma to the Long Island Growers Market at Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn —and he proved yet again what an incredible companion he is. Kuma soaked in every moment: sniffing handmade soaps, politely sampling cheese, curiously exploring plants, and winning hearts left and right. He was gentle, friendly, and calm—the most social Akita we’ve ever met.

Despite all this, Kuma is scared and confused at the shelter. He’s a dignified, sensitive boy who just wants a person to lean on. Whether it’s a soft bed in a foster home or a permanent place in your heart, Kuma needs out now.

Please don’t scroll past. Visit his Petfinder link for more info, and help us get this beautiful soul the peace and love he deserves.

We just posted Kuma recently, but our hearts are heavy seeing this sweet boy still waiting. When we close up the shelter and head home to our own dogs, Kuma cries. Not barks — cries. And every time we walk away, it’s like leaving behind a friend who just wants what all dogs deserve: a place to belong.

Kuma is a 7–8 year old Akita with a heart full of quiet devotion. He may be older in years, but he’s not “old” — he’s just grown into the very best version of himself. The wild zoomies and couch-chewing days are behind him. Now, he prefers leaning in for head scratches, lying quietly by your side, and moving through your home with a calm, watchful presence.

Like many Akitas, Kuma is a homebody to his core. The shelter is no place for a dog like him. It’s loud, busy, and unpredictable — everything he’s not. Kuma craves peace, routine, and the unspoken connection that comes from simply being with his person. He doesn’t want much. Just to be someone’s shadow. Someone’s steady, silent protector.

He’s 72 pounds of pure loyalty, gentle with other dogs and friendly with kids. He’s surprisingly cat-like in the way he’ll rub against your legs and silently appear beside you. He’s not demanding. Just patient. Waiting for someone who sees past the number on his kennel card and into the soul of a dog who still has so much love to give.

If you’ve ever loved an Akita — or wanted to — Kuma is waiting. And he’s tired of waiting alone.

Three years. That’s how long Mason has waited—patiently, lovingly, and full of hope—for his forever home. It’s hard to believe this incredible boy is still here, but every single day, he greets us with a wagging tail and those bright eyes that never give up.

Mason might just be the smartest dog we’ve ever met. We’re convinced he went to Harvard before landing in the shelter—he knows a long list of commands, breezes through our agility course, and is always eager to learn something new. He walks beautifully on a leash and would be the perfect hiking, walking, or jogging partner.

And then there's his greatest love of all: balls. Mason is obsessed with playing fetch. You’ll rarely see him without one in his mouth—his eyes light up the moment he sees it, and he’s instantly ready for a game. Watching him chase after a ball with pure joy is the kind of magic that reminds you what unconditional love looks like.

He does well with other dogs but can be a bit dominant, so a meet-and-greet is required for any potential dog siblings.

Mason has waited far too long. He’s smart, he’s sweet, he’s full of love—and he's more than ready to go home. Maybe it’s with you.

Daisy is a 2-year-old firecracker with a heart full of love and loyalty. Weighing in at about 36 pounds, she’s a s***ky, spirited little lady who’s always ready for fun. Recently, we did her DNA and were surprised to learn she’s almost half Chow Chow—something that definitely shines through in her confidence and devotion.

Daisy is incredibly treat-motivated and is learning her manners like a champ. She’s a total people pleaser and the very definition of loyal. While she’s great with new people, we wouldn’t be surprised to see her step into the role of protector once she bonds with her family—because when Daisy loves, she loves hard.

We truly don’t understand why this sweet, playful, and affectionate girl has been with us so long. One look into her eyes and you’ll know—this is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of dog.
Come meet Daisy—you might just find your heart’s been waiting for her.

Calling all Akita lovers!

Kuma is a true original — a dignified, gentle soul wrapped in a big, fluffy Akita coat. At 7–8 years old, Kuma is in his golden years, and he’s more interested in sharing quiet moments than chasing tennis balls. He’s also surprisingly cat-like: he’ll rub against your legs, lean in for affection, and silently appear at your side when you least expect it. His calm presence brings a special kind of peace to your home.

This 72-pound sweetheart has a surprisingly cat-like personality. He’ll rub against your legs for affection, quietly appear at your side, and follow you from room to room with calm devotion. He doesn’t need constant activity — just a peaceful space, a bit of structure, and someone who appreciates his quiet loyalty.

Kuma would do best with someone experienced with Akitas or similar breeds who understands his independent streak and respectful boundaries. He’s easygoing, low-maintenance, and full of quiet charm.
Kuma is gentle and dog friendly.

If you're looking for a companion to share slow mornings, peaceful afternoons, and sunny spots, Kuma is ready to be your shadow.

3,347 days. That’s how long Emma has waited.
Not for food, or care, or even love—we’ve given her all of that the best we can. But for something none of us here can provide: a home.
If you’ve visited the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter, you’ve likely met Emma. She’s not just our longest resident—she’s part of the fabric of this place. She has her own room, complete with a couch she claims as her throne, and she enjoys her snacks and leisurely walks like any dog would. She’s got a little s***k left in her, a little fire, a little fight.
But this place—no matter how much we love her—was never meant to be her forever home.
As Emma enters her final days, we’re making a heartfelt plea. She deserves to spend the rest of her time not in a shelter, but in a home. A real one. One with warm patches of sunlight, soft beds, and someone to take her on those leisurely walks she still enjoys.
Emma’s still got some s***k. She knows what she likes, and she’s never been one to hide it. She’s not a delicate old lady—she’s got personality and a spark that’s all her own. And we believe there’s someone out there who will see her for exactly who she is and love her because of it.
We will cover any medical costs for the rest of Emma’s natural life. What we can’t provide is the feeling of a real home, the kind of peace only a family can give.
Please, if you can’t adopt, share her story. Help us find the person who will give Emma the one thing she’s been missing all these years. Let her know what it feels like to be chosen. To be home.
*Emma needs to be an only dog.

*Reminder* We are currently facilitating adoptions through appointment only. If you arrive at the shelter without an appointment to meet a dog, we may not be able to assist you.

Meet Obi – Our One-of-a-Kind Pup!
Obi’s DNA results are in, and he’s officially a true original—a mix of 14 different breeds! This 1-year-old Hound mix is a happy, bouncy bundle of energy who loves to run, play, and explore the world with his signature goofy charm.

Despite all his amazing qualities, Obi has been with us for 9 months, and no one has ever asked to meet him. We think it’s time for this special boy to finally get the spotlight he deserves.

Because of his size and exuberance, we recommend Obi go to a home with children aged 16 and up. He may prefer being your one-and-only pet, but if you already have a dog at home, we’re happy to do a meet-and-greet to see if it’s a good match.

✨ Fun Fact: Obi has unique dark skin pigmentation that adds to his standout look! It’s currently under control but may need some care in the future.

Obi is ready to bring fun, love, and a whole lot of personality into someone’s life. Could that someone be you?

Introducing a new volunteer favorite: Nova!
Nova is a lovable, chunky 2-year-old pit bull with a heart as big as her smile. She may be carrying a few extra pounds, but don’t let that fool you—this girl is full of energy, fun, and personality!

Despite her current curves, Nova loves to stay active. Whether it's playing in the yard, going for walks, or chasing toys, she’s always ready to move. While Nova is dog friendly, she would prefer a more lowkey dog that will respect her.

Looking for a smart, affectionate, and slightly squishy best friend? Nova’s your girl!

After 2 YEARS in our care, our beloved long-timer Tyson has finally found his forever home! 💙

Tyson came to us as a diamond in the rough—full of life, love, and potential. All he needed was a little guidance, some basic training, and most importantly… a chance. And while he was passed up time and time again—because of his size, and the stigma of being at the shelter for so long—we never gave up on him.

Over time, we watched this big, goofy beefcake grow into the amazing dog we always knew he could be. Now, Tyson is off living the good life with a family who loves him just as much as we do. 🐾🏡💕

Tyson’s story is proof that dogs heal, forgive, and are ALWAYS capable of giving love—no matter how long their journey takes.

Let’s give a huge round of applause to Tyson and his new family!
We’ll miss you, buddy, but your new beginning is everything we dreamed of for you.

UPDATE: Adopted! :)

Portia isn’t just a shelter dog — she’s the shelter dog. She’s fun, active, endlessly loving, and adored by every staff member and volunteer who meets her. She even has a job: helping us assess new dogs for friendliness (she’s a total pro and gets paid in milkbones 🦴).

She’s helped so many dogs find homes… but somehow, she’s still here.

Portia loves everyone and everything. She’s ready to trade in her “employee of the month” badge for a collar in a home of her own. She’s more than earned it. 💛

Come meet the dog who’s helped so many others — and maybe change her life this time.
