One of the most frequent things we hear from owners is “Of course he won’t do it here!” when their dog doesn’t exhibit the same bad behaviors in front of their trainer as they do at home. Some owners even become a little frustrated because they feel as if they aren’t making progress in training when they finish a lesson and their dog begins acting out immediately after arriving back home again. There is a super simple reason for this behavior change, and one that owners sometimes don’t love reckoning with: your dog is better behaved with your trainer present because those are the only moments when they are guaranteed consistency.

We receive requests for in-home training lessons frequently for this reason as well- because owners feel as if meeting with their trainer in the area where the bad behavior happens the most will mean a more straightforward path to eradicating it. The unfortunate truth (and the reason why we decline these requests) is that having a trainer in your home will only solve your issues for the one hour a week that they’re there. It’s what happens in the time that you’re NOT at your lessons that is the difference maker, and that principle applies for every client, every household, and every behavioral issue.

Dogs will always operate in a system of what is most satisfying for them in any given moment- if pushing boundaries, breaking rules, and behaving badly at home is what earns them access to the things that are meaningful to them, you will always be fighting an uphill battle in changing those behaviors. If you want your dog to behave at home the same way they behave in front of your trainer, you have to start being consistent in your expectations of them there too.

Today we mourn the loss of K9 Fifo of the Delaware State Police. He was assigned to Troop 7 as a dual purpose Patrol and Explosives K9, serving since 2013.

Sending Prayers to his handler and family. Losing a partner is never easy.
