This is how I track their treatment. Itā€™s July and August. I need to print another. I had them but someone ate one and another peed on another. Weā€™ve been dealing with some odd illness since Hurricane Beryl. Off to the vet with Oscar

šŸ˜øFollow .cat.sanctuary if you love cats!

šŸ˜»We now care for 50+ cats and 9 kittens total. Itā€™s a lot of work but I know they are happy and healthy. I do everything I can and rely on extra help from you. We always need help with cat food & litter. Always! I am hoping to get some time to work on a website/blog to share about them individually, the struggles we face, needs, and goals. Like the plan to have a cat fence to keep them protected in the yard, a large walk in cat house with an office for me to work with AC, secret entrances for them, lots of places for them to play, a cover coming out from the house where the pergala is but extends further and more cat shelves in the house. Our main focus currently is their health. We donā€™t have additional enclosures for when the kitties are sick. I used to separate into the back room but itā€™s currently the kitten room. After Hurricane Beryl many have gotten sick in a way Iā€™ve never seen. Might be Covid, not sure, my vet didnā€™t want to test for anything other than FIV/FELV so I felt like it was a wasted $200 but at least I know Francesca doesnā€™t have those. All donations go straight to the cats and are not used for ourselves. This is not a business. Itā€™s our lives and Iā€™ve focused my own on ensuring theirs is full of love and good health. So, support our cause. You will be glad you did.

Itā€™s been awhile. So much has happened in so little time. For now, hereā€™s todays post about Hurricane Beryl.

Your friendly neighborhood cat lady and cat man here. We are all well but took damage. If anyone has an abundance of chicken that they feel may go bad or wonā€™t get eaten quick enough, we have kitties with sensitive stomachs that will happily eat it. I usually dice and cook it bland. No need to cook it but we dont want it to go to waste. We will happily take any slightly sketchy chicken. šŸ˜† We have everything we need. Just wanted to use this opportunity to say donate, donā€™t throw away. šŸ˜

As for the restā€¦We prepped the cat house, spent the last few days making stairs so our resident wobbly cat could go in, and even made a cat walk. We brought in a few other kennels from the shed thatā€™s now without a roof. Seems no one actually used the house this time. They hid under it and eventually all the cats were indoors save two. A few came in after the worst of it. Needless to say, tensions were high but I got everyone settled. The kittens felt the toys had to be all over the dining room and livingroom floor so thatā€™s how it stayed.

Coming to the end of this thing, a tree from next door fell. Scared the crap out of us all, took out the roof shed and buckled the four year old roof. Everyone is okay. The damage didnā€™t appear to break through the roof. At least we donā€™t know until we start cutting it down.

Many kitties are back outside enjoying the cool weather while I try to help the two who remained outside dry off a little and clear the deck. Seems we prepped the wrong things but luckily I didnā€™t have to go out in the pouring rain to save any special cats this time.

Sending my best to you all. Iā€™m just glad itā€™s not hot outsideā€¦that would have made this far worse. Stay safe out there. Make good decisions.

P. S. The wind bent my metal cat crossing sign. šŸ«Ø

Donā€™t worry. Heā€™s comfortable. Donā€™t think Iā€™ve gotten to posting about this little dude. His siblings were killed by dogs the night before Jason and I had planned to catch them all. He was the last and mama had lost interest after. Canā€™t imagine how she felt calling for her babies and not getting them. Jason brought them all home and buried them together in a box in the same place we bury all our others that we have lost. He was devastated. So, we brought this little guy home and now all the girls mother him. Heā€™s a character. Dives head into this small space between the arm of the chair and my hip. Then flips over. Sometimes he lays head down. Heā€™s a nut job. More coming soon.

Someone has been inside several days having been severely dehydrated and lost a ton of weight. I was worried he had a blockage or UTI. He was going a tiny bit but since Iā€™ve given him subcutaneous fluids, tons of wet food, and put him on amoxicillin, heā€™s going normally. Likely bacteria. Heā€™s still a little dehydrated but fights me with the needle. Itā€™s a good sign. Few more days of meds and he can go back outside. Heā€™s such a sweet boyā€¦.a good boy

May the 4th be with you! If youā€™re in Texas, get out and vote for senate chair replacementā€¦Molly Cook or Jarvis Johnsonā€¦Iā€™ll be voting for Molly. I support her beliefs but ALSOā€¦We need a younger generation in senate and women deserve autonomy over their own bodies. The end. So, get out and vote today. You have till 7pm. If you just found out, no worries, only these two folks on the ballot today.

Beyond that. If you love cats, give us a follow to support our sanctuary. Itā€™s expensive but I truly love these kiddos. We have a whole new slew of cats at another location. We have been working hard to trap and release but havenā€™t been quick enough and have several kittens to care for. One survivor from a litter of four that were killed by neighborhood dogsā€¦heā€™s now here with us in our home. The other litter of four is safe. Wanna help? Link in bio. We always need food and flea treatment.

Play time with the kiddos while Francesca rests. She got so pi**ed at me when I forced the little packet of bland chicken, pet-tinic, and tons of water, probiotics, diatomaceous earth, and tons of water. Sheā€™s been sleeping restfully since thenā€¦maybe itā€™s been four or five hours. She even got up earlier and drank some water on her own. I donā€™t know if itā€™s this video or not but I was very happy. She did get sick about ten minutes ago. It was a little yellow bile so Iā€™m sure she needs to eat but she ran off from me so I donā€™t torture her again. Poor girl. Better but still healing. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ She needs blood work done for sure. Until then. Enjoy the play time. One of these videos I flip. Sorry bout that.

03/03/2024

Hey everyone. Iā€™m in need of some advice, help, or anything. This is the long list of what Iā€™ve done. Iā€™m doing everything I can to avoid the vet because I canā€™t even pay my bills right now. I just healed from spinal surgery and Iā€™m looking for work but nothing yet. Having a sick kitty keeps me from that effort too. Iā€™m so worried about my little squirrel, Francesca (not an actual squirrel). Sheā€™s not eating and acts thirsty but doesnā€™t drink. She started vomiting white foam two days ago. Which means, empty stomach. Nausea. No signs of FVR flare up. No sneezes or sniffles. Just sleeping and sheā€™s previously had p**p stuck in her b***y hairs. I try to keep them cut back.

Iā€™m thinking she may have eaten a bug that her stomach didnā€™t agree with but all my crew eat mosquito hawks all the time right now and they are fine. No one else is sick but I have noticed the long haired kitties have p**ps stuck in their hair sometimes, like her. So, maybe theyā€™ve been constipated. I usually feed DE w/probiotics, lemongrass, and and vitamin c to address any possible worm issues since I canā€™t keep everyone on flea treatment right now (I get a steal for $100 but I donā€™t even have $1 to my name). The lovely people who follow me on NextDoor donate food for them which has kept them all from flare ups but I think the gap in quality dry food (a mix of different brands that improve their immune system and have probiotics) may be the problem here. Not sure.

Normally, everyone eats the wet food mix but lately a few have refused it. So, I change the flavor to one they like and nope, still no. A mix, nope. Those kitties have to be treated for tapeworms, fun times! The others are doing just fine. Everyone has fresh water and even get catnip as often as I can get more dry..itā€™s good for their tummies.

Francesca just started vomiting and refuses to eat or drink. I initially thought that itā€™s worms because sheā€™s been avoiding the wet food and it definitely doesnā€™t seem like FVR. No symptoms there. So, I dosed her with my last pill of Drontel. She hated it and for good reason. Kept most of it down I think. Then I considered that maybe she had an infection in her tummy or something from eating a bug. I have fish-mox and a prescription for them for amoxicillin but not the money to refill the huge bottle for just her (itā€™s $10 but itā€™s such a waste). I have doxycycline on hand so I decide to dose her with it and she definitely didnā€™t keep it down. Iā€™m not sure if I should keep going at this point because Iā€™m worried all the meds will just keep worsening the nausea. I have maybe 12 or so different kinds of wet food and tried nearly every one but she wasnā€™t interested. I even diced some chicken and made it for her with her favorite arugula she loves to chew. Nothing. I took her outside thinking sheā€™d chew the grass for her tummy. Nada. I even put some topical Cerinia on her ear to help. No change. Gave her some olive oil for constipation. No change but she did seem to keep it down.

I did force her to drink water and some bone broth. She hated it and kept smacking like she was trying to spit it out. So, I checked her teeth. She did have a lot of tartar on a back tooth (sheā€™s barely 1 yrā€¦the negatives of wet food) and she actually let me scratch a chunk off with my nail. Thatā€™s when I noticed her white gums. I did the scruff test and she isnā€™t dehydrated so white gums is usually anemia. Maybe worms caused the anemia. Havenā€™t seen her go to the bathroom but sheā€™s gone in a box only to get out and vomit. Sheā€™s gone while I was sleeping. I can tell her hairs have had litter stuck to them.

She hides under coffee tables and sometimes under the bed but sheā€™s also laid on a bag in the kitchen or by the couch, or on a towel on the counter, and even on the spare pillow I have next to mine for the kitties. Sheā€™s lying here now.

I then dosed her with Pet-tinic (iron supplement with B vitamins) and I swear by it! Always have it on hand. Of course she hated it and yes, it upsets her tummy but she kept it down more than anything else. I tortured her enough last night that I decided to skip trying to force feed her since I made her drink a lot more water and bone broth. It makes her vomit more but itā€™s better to have something in than out. She doesnā€™t see dehydrated enough to do subQ.

Woke up to her snuggling with me. She got sick a few times with the vomit now a slight pink hueā€¦blood perhaps from straining. She does a ton of smacking. Just not sure why. Knew she needed to eat. Someone donated this bland chicken licking treat things so instead of blending the chicken I made I used that in a syringe with water, catnip, a little DE to help along with some probiotics, she hated it the whole time. Trying to spit it out. Iā€™m torturing her basically. Trying to get some kind of solidish food in her so I can do more iron. I even sat rubbing her belly which she didnā€™t seem to mind with all the growling with anything else I did. I even set up lactated ringers in a 50ml syringe but the second I started that she jumped and i stopped. I tortured her enough. I prefer her pi**ed and alive to not and dead.

Seems she got sick a little, but she didnā€™t hide much after that. I had to give another cat a bath because she had p**p all over her. After I was cleaned up, I found her curled up on my pillow on the bed. She seems fine right now but Iā€™m not sure what else to do. Iā€™m worried thereā€™s an obstruction or sheā€™s got serious constipation. She seems definitely uncomfortable but Iā€™ve never been able to express a cats bladder or any p**p situation before. Iā€™ve tried but canā€™t seem to get it.

At this point, Iā€™m thinking she needs blood work done. I could do subQ fluids because she does act dehydrated but isnā€™t. Itā€™s the only thing I havenā€™t done and I havenā€™t given more doxycycline yet. Giving her a rest for now. I could use any help trying to figure this out. Thereā€™s nothing she could have swallowed. Iā€™m legit at a loss. Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey, lovelies. Francesca is sick. She didnā€™t show any signs of illness the night before last. I swore she ate but Iā€™m not exactly certain. She acted like it but then I started finding white foamy vomit around the house the next day. Found out it was her. I knew something was wrong when she wanted to isolate in the cat food/laundry/water heater/appliance room. She didnā€™t stay though but I knew something was up. She and a few of the others havenā€™t been eating wet food and Iā€™m not sure why. I thought maybe it was the herbs in the food grade diatomaceous earth (DE). Maybe they didnā€™t like the rosemary. No, itā€™s not a lot and I even mixed with half the full amount of DE in case that was the problem. I figured they really just werenā€™t liking the fancy feast fish and shrimp anymore for whatever reason. No idea. The others do. So, tried FF chicken pate and again, no dice. Thatā€™s how Iā€™ve been managing tapeworms because we still have a flea problem, but when they arenā€™t eating the wet food I canā€™t manage it. So, I figured she probably has worms but she doesnā€™t have tapeworms. Whatever letā€™s deworm her with the last Drontel pill I have. See seems to be isolating less since then but sheā€™s still not eating and still white foamy vomit so I know sheā€™s nauseous and her belly is empty. I have doxycycline and thatā€™s been a common need around here. She isnā€™t showing signs of a flareup or sniffling. Something is going on though for sure. Iā€™ve tried dosing this morning but she was quick being that she was mad at me for the pill so Iā€™m not even sure if I got most in her this morning. I did this afternoon and sure enough she didnā€™t keep it down. I wonder if itā€™s from chasing and eating all the mosquito hawks but everyone else eats more and they seem okay. Theyā€™ve all been pretty lethargic though, so thatā€™s been weird. I tried all the different wet foods last night and she just wasnā€™t interested.
I have some topical Cerenia so I put some on her ear about an hour ago. We shall see how that goes.

So, Iā€™m struggling. I donā€™t know what else to do. I guess Iā€™ll be forcing food later tonight. About to check her skin for dehydration. Might need to do subq fluids to help. Iā€™m still looking for work so I donā€™t have the funds for a vet appointment or my other bills which already worries me, but I can do without all that. Iā€™m just so worried about her and wish I knew what else I could do and what happened. She doesnā€™t have diarrhea. Wth is going on?! The only other thing that has been different is that I put catnip in their water two days ago. They werenā€™t fans so I changed it out.

Microchipping the kiddos is harder than I thought. The needle isnā€™t as easy to push in as smaller ones. It doesnā€™t go as deep as it should so then you have to push really hard trying to make it. Even then it just doesnā€™t want to and Iā€™m not about to keep forcing it. I was already feeling bad about it. Iā€™ve only ever done Charlesā€™ FIP meds and Mr. Shadowā€™s fluids. Those were best with an 18 or 19 gauge needle. This thing looks like a 14g and is just more difficult. Cali, Lumen, and Peach did great. Cicero was a champ and just overly happy I was petting him. Poked him and Puzzle three times. I had to use a different microchip for puzzle because sheā€™d jumped from the other cats playing and it got away from me but it wasnā€™t deep enough. It just wouldnā€™t go so I tried another and the same issue but finally just clicked it in. But then I couldnā€™t find it under her skin. She did this raspy squeaky cry too (her voice is adorable). Sheā€™s the most precious and sweet thing. I feel awful.

I really should have gotten a microchip scanner to check itā€™s there. I have $20 in my bank account and the dang thing is $24! Iā€™m frustrated at this process. It shouldnā€™t be this difficult. You get better the more you do it. All is well then it seems like I get a dull needle and I canā€™t exactly be tossing microchips away like that. Ugh! This photo of Meringue demonstrates how Iā€™m feeling.

Hi, everyone. Time for another long update & need for donations. Hope your 2024 has gotten off to a good start.

We only had three cats get sick during the holidays and not at the same time. I didnā€™t even quarantine them because I was healing from surgery. Iā€™d like to say itā€™s my choice and change of food, love, and attention they get, but thereā€™s no way to know for certain. The majority of them are bonded to each other, each cat plays and/or snuggles with each other! Itā€™s truly very sweet and rare situation.

Our biggest struggle has been managing fleas and tapeworms. The last two years I dewormed them, they all got sickā€¦I assume from the stress of dosing. With a ton of research and a helpful vet, I am able to get flea/dewormer treatment for everyone for around $100, but since I havenā€™t been able to get back to work, Iā€™ve gone back to dosing with a mix of herbs and diatomaceous earth to deworm them. Itā€™s helped in the past and is cheaper than tapeworm medicine ($17 for 3 pills, for 37 cats is $221 and to do that over and over because of fleasā€¦whew thatā€™d be a lot). It just takes more time and energy to make their wet food mix every night. I donā€™t mind. I love them so much that itā€™s worth it and since Iā€™m not working yet, I have the time.

Problem is, we desperately need wet food. Theyā€™ve not been into the fancy feast fish & shrimp nor the I and love and you purrkey turkey, so Iā€™ve wasted time, and money, making food they didnā€™t eat. They really like Fancy Feast Chicken. We could use a bunch of that. Someone donated some cheaper pate by Meow Mix (I think it was Chicken and Liver) that I mixed with it and they loved it! I donā€™t want to keep giving it but I donā€™t mind it right now. Anything that ensures they get the DE mix that is so good for their systems. Their coats get super soft and those with wet coughs nearly go away completely.

As for dry food, we really could use all of it! Purina One True Instinct Chicken, Blue Wilderness Chicken, Instinct Limited Ingredient Turkey, and Solid Gold Indigo Moon. Weā€™ve been feeding Purina Naturals like we used to and they just run through it so fast now. I think theyā€™ve changed the ingredients because they are constantly hungry and never satisfied.

On top of that, we have two more adult cats that come around (and need to be neutered but I havenā€™t caught yet). They are much larger cats (tall, not fat), the size of Vecna who eats twice as much as everyone else, so they eat a lot! Using the higher quality protein foods seems to keep them from getting sick and stops allergic reactions. Vecna gets super watery eyes on Purina Naturals or other lesser Protein foods.

I just purchased a bag of Solid Gold but Iā€™ve been trying to supplement the cheap stuff with it, so we will need more soon since Echo, Stella, and Puzzle will only eat a mix of Solid Gold with Instinct and/or Blue Wilderness. Echo has FIV and has less inflammation when I stick to what she loves..she really only enjoys high protein food.

To all that read these posts, keep up with us, and donate, thank you so much! Weā€™ve truly been blessed. Over the last few years, I lost everything with the deterioration of my health, but somehow Iā€™ve been able to care this huge crew! Theyā€™ve saved my life and kept me going when I wanted to give up. Now that my health is constantly improving, I canā€™t help but see them as my little miracles. Sure, Iā€™m here doing the work, but the real saviors are those who have donated and continue to support us. With each delivery, Iā€™m overwhelmed with emotion. Thankful and grateful to you all for the amount of giving and pure love for us. šŸ™šŸ»
