You’re invited to a Deep Mulch Garden Party on August 11th from 4-9PM at God’s Garden in the Cully neighborhood!

Join us for a workshop on the deep mulch method, tour the garden, or just kick back and sip on herbal elixirs while listening to DJs spin vinyl amidst the flowers. It’s gonna be a vibe 🎵

We will also have the cob pizza oven fired up, and there will be opportunity for folks to enjoy freshly made pizza with toppings straight from the garden! There will be salad and garden snacks as well, for those that are gluten free or don’t want pizza.

The vibrations will be held by on the Kora, and on the wheels of steel, with guest DJs likely

Herbal Elixirs will be crafted fresh from the garden by Elixir Bar

The event runs 4-9PM, and we will post a detailed schedule for the days activities once we confirm in a week or so :)

Shoutout for sponsoring this event, and all of our other local partners who are lending a hand with logistics.

Looking forward to seeing you all there! 🌿

Freshly glazed crops in the field today.

Can’t believe the cacti are still looking decent under a sheet of ice. They were collected growing wild on the San Juan islands in WA, so they can handle the cold, but idk if they ever get iced like this up there…pretty impressive! Badass little creatures ✊🏼

Mystical patterns on these “Turquoise Lagoon” sweet peas from .seeds 🌀

Swipe to see what they looked like a month ago 🤔

Somehow in the last few weeks the plants have started producing flowers with spots that look like eyes. Pure magic.

A little bit spooky, highly mysterious, and absolutely one of my favorite surprises of the season this year in the garden.

Very curious to see if this expression will manifest in next years crop, or if it’s a one time blessing.

Either way I am in awe ✨

Have you ever wondered whether in your herbal supplements really contain the plants they claim to? Cases of food fraud are rising with inflation, and, with herbal medicines already poorly regulated, it is harder than ever to know if you are getting what you’ve paid for.

Down at the farm, we have a mantra— when you grow, you know.

Studies into herbal medicine fraud regularly find 1/4-1/2 of products are fake, full of fillers, or are contaminated with substances like pesticides and heavy metals. (Nerds can DM for links to journal articles!)

No organic labeling, influencer recommendation, or product review can substitute for your five senses.

Luckily, we can grow a huge range of medicinal plants right here in the Northwest. Join us on Saturday, May 27 at .homestead.supply and take back your power over your herbal medicine supply.

Link to register in bio.

Learn yourself somethin new!!

Jostaberry cuttings…sometimes I just can’t bring myself to toss pruned branches into the compost, especially with a plant that grows roots with ease.

Jostaberry is that plant.

No rooting hormone needed, no special care, just plug it into the ground and it knows what to do. You’d want to cover it to retain humidity if you were taking cuts in the summer, but this time of year that’s not a concern.

Expect us to have dozens of young Jostas for sale this summer. Once the cuts have rooted out we will divide them and pot them individually.

Btw I’m fairly certain it’s pronounced “yaw-stah” not “jah-stah” for those of you who are scratching your head wondering how tf josta is pronounced. That’s the word on the street from the homie who knows his obscure fruits 🙌🏼

Ladies, gents, and all beyond the binary — we are thrilled to announce that YOU met our matched funding goal for our first ever holiday fundraiser! Between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day, you helped us raise $2500 — which our wonderful partners at matched.

Last year we donated more than 3,000 packets of local, organically-grown seeds around Portland and Southwest Washington. Your generosity is quite literally making it possible for us to establish our online seed shop and prepare our 2023 seed donations. Our harvest this year was even more bountiful than our first. Now you have given us the funds we need to ensure that it is cleaned, packed, and distributed this coming growing season.

As a new seed farm, and an even newer 501c3 nonprofit, your support means the world to us. Many people who take on insane challenges — like building a nonprofit from the ground up — are so committed to helping others that asking for help can be a vulnerable experience. Speaking for myself, the way you've showed up for us has been deeply humbling and intensely rejuvenating. I am a puddle of gratitude.

Thank you for sowing the seeds you wish to see in the world.

Sincerely,

Laura
Director of Development

Plugging away in the seedhouse running germination tests, cleaning seed, and admiring the abundance of the season 🌿 even though the garden is mostly dormant, the inside work never slows down!
·
Once the germination test results are back we will need help stamping, filling, and labeling packets for distribution in 2023. Holla if you want to lend a hand and help us pack some seeds! Usually we are just chillin listenin to music, chatting, and packing away..its a pretty nice work environment compared to some of the rainy muddy farm work parties! lol 💦
·
We will be announcing some seed-packing work parties in the next few weeks so stay tuned. Super busy behind the scenes. Huge shout to everyone who has donated to our fall fundraiser, we have raised over $1000 which is amazing, but we are still a long way from raising what we need to survive through 2023. Know someone who could use a pollinator garden in their yard instead of lawn? Tag them and let them know we would love to design and install one for them as part of our fundraiser! We are going to need the support of our community to keep doing the good work we are doing. Thanks for spreading the word and making this world a better place! ❤️ 🌱 ✊🏼

We are so grateful for the East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District (EMSWCD)! They generously funded our project to install a food forest on our farm this year and we just finished planting it a few weeks ago 🪴
·
In addition to their funding, we also received plant donations from Portland Nursery. 🙏🏼 what a blessing. We sourced the remainder of our plants from One Green World Nursery, here is a list of some of the things we planted:
·
Hazelnut
Stone Pine
Pawpaw
Fig
Sea Berry
Hardy Kiwi
Wintergreen
Honeyberry
Blueberry
Lingonberry
Grape
Tea
Yaupon
·
Not your average food forest! We are all about diversity and learning about unique food crops here, so of course our food forest is a bit eccentric, just like we are 🙃
·
We supplemented these plants with many of our own propagated starts, so the food forest also contains the following perennials:
·
Peach
Olive
Apple
Eucalyptus
Pineapple Guava
Chilean Guava
Elderberry
Strawberry
Lavender
Raspberry
Jostaberry
Maximilian Sunflower
Persian Catnip
Ashwagandha
Madder
Alexanders
Cinnamon Vine
Lovage
Valerian
Woad
Burdock
Flowering To***co
Thyme
Oregano
Sage
Plantain
Yarrow
St. John's Wort
Achira
Comfrey
Camas
·
In addition to all of these, we will plant dozens of annual flowers, herbs, and vegetables amidst the polyculture of the food forest in 2023 to provide an additional layer of diversity (as if there wasn't enough already!)
·
This entire project is intended to be a model/demonstration garden and provide inspiration to city residents who are curious about converting their land into a productive food space. Want to come visit the food forest? Send us a message and schedule a time to come by and take a look and get some inspiration for your own plot! We offer landscape design services, so we are happy to provide a plan for you to execute in your own yard once you are inspired. Mid-Late Summer or early Fall would be the best time to come visit, because right now the plants are mostly dormant and don't look like much. However if you want to come by and take a look during the winter, spring, or any time, we are here for it! 🙌🏼

Scenes from Fall 🍂🌧🍃

1 - Oca (oxalis tuberosa) flowers, you rarely see these, but this particular cultivar is flowering heavily right now

2 - Mexican Sunflower beaming bright orange in the evening light. These flowers are lighting up the garden right now when many other plants are done blooming

3 - Rocky Mountain Bee Plant seeds clinging to the framework of their seed pod which has fallen away. Caught these just in time before the winds and rain reclaimed them into the soil

4 - Bamboo Tipi full of climbing beans, and heavenly blue morning glory with Mexican sunflower and cosmos in the foreground. Lovely color palette, and you can go inside the tipi for a taste of heaven

5 - Pineapple Sage bursting with flowers, the hummingbirds are working this plant heavily and it is a joy to have in the garden. The first flowers emerged just a week or two ago, after being planted in April. Not for the impatient!

More posts and updates coming soon, got a lot of exciting announcements in the near future. So busy right now yall, it’s madness 😵‍💫

Looks as good from the back as she does from the front 😍 those green petal looking things are actually called the “involucre” and I have no idea how to pronounce that lol but they are gorgeous even without a name to describe them by..what a beautiful pattern and symmetry.

This is “Big Smile” sunflower from . These were supposed to only grow 1-2ft tall but instead they are 7-8ft lol kinda messed up my design plan but there ya have it….

Shoutout to for donating a bunch of plant starts! 🙏🏼✨❤️

We are working to plant a perennial food forest demonstration garden and they graciously gifted us a bunch of appropriate plants. Goji Berry, Kiwi, Black Raspberries, Everbearing Strawberry, Rosemary, Sage, and Lavender. Amazing.

We are so grateful for their support of our organization and for helping us fulfill our mission to educate and serve the community through cultivation.

Thankfully we tucked these plants into the ground a week or more before the heat wave, so they had a bit of time to adjust before getting blasted by the sun the last few days. Very excited to watch the food forest grow and come into its own over the next few years 😊

06/27/2022

I realized today that I haven’t posted on IG in almost a month. Amazing how quickly time passes this time of year when the days are long and the garden work is literally endless. It’s hard for me to find time to post on social media and engage with the digital world when there is so much going on in my physical space. After a 12 hr day in the garden the last thing I want to do is spend time crafting a post about the work I just did! I do want to share more of what is going on in my daily life tho, and I am working towards a balance of doing the garden work and creating content at the same time. So please bear with me as I post sporadically and sometimes don’t respond to DMs for weeks. I’m going to try and post more reels with auto text captions to make it easier and more simple to create content. I promise I am busy in the trenches doing the work that allows me to master my craft and then teach y’all how to do the same. If anyone wants to come hang out and take videos of me doing my thing in the garden and then edit them into educational clips, please be in touch.

Meanwhile I will do my best to create quality content while also keeping the garden flowing, processing/distributing seeds, and finding a way to pay the rent!
It’s a lot to juggle at once, but I’ve always been a good juggler 😊

Since my last post a lot has happened….we’ve had record rainfall in June, the farm has been a swamp and now all of a sudden it’s 100 degrees out of nowhere….talk about an erratic season! The strawberries are finally ripe (many weeks late) and tons of seedlings are emerging and hopefully not getting devoured by the hordes of slugs that have thrived with this long wet cool spring.

Continued in comments cause my captions are always too long….
