Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

THE 3-3-3 RULE OF RE-HOMING

As a regular follower, this topic will be very familiar to you, but I feel there is still a need to continue to flag it up. I know that it is always shared with the best of intentions, but the 3-3-3 rule really has no place in fearful dog groups, which is where I see it most. We have to get the message across loud and clear that all dogs need to feel safe, first and foremost, and to achieve this, it means no expectations, no pressure, and no time parameters.

For those who may not have come across it before, the 3-3-3 rule, in essence, is this:

*It takes three days for a dog in a new home to relax a little.
* It takes three weeks to settle in.
*It takes three months to be fully comfortable.

In this blog, I discuss the topic further:
https://www.trailiepawsforthought.com/post/the-3-3-3-rule-help-or-hindrance

When canine professionals take on clients in need of behavioural work, it is always stressed that a time-frame cannot be given. We work with the dog in front of us. Every dog is an individual. We work at the dog's pace. Why then, do we have such a hard time applying this in the home setting too?

There are so many different scenarios in which dogs are re-homed, some of which may not have involved the experience of living in a home, or having regular contact with humans, and some may have experienced trauma. We need to be prepared to take things at their pace, be patient, and try not to feel disheartened if progress seems slow at times.

The bottom line has to be: don’t be tempted to rush things or try to find shortcuts; TAKE THINGS SLOWLY. FEELING SAFE TAKES AS LONG AS IT TAKES!

Sunday trick training with Sebastian! Cont.
How to teach your pup to cross their paws

Step 3: Once your pup is comfortable with this place item on the floor next to the paw that will not be crossed and continue to target, remember you may have to take a step back if this is too much for your pup
Step 4:

Can you tell me what step 4 is!?

Doing some Sunday trick training with Sebastian!
How to teach your pup to cross their paws
Step 1: Using a small lid, cap, cover, etc. have your pup “Target” the item with their paw (remember if you have previously used a nose target that’s going to be the first step!)
Step 2: Use the target to have your pup (in a down position) target with one paw and continue to reward each time as you gradually move target over opposite paw each time

Did you know...

Retractable leashes can teach your dog to pull?

Dog fights can not easily be avoided on a retractable leash?

You or your dog can easily get entangled in them causing rope burns, cuts, and even damage as bad as amputations, broken teeth, and vision loss.

If the lock fails you have lost all control over your dog?

KEEP YOUR PET ON A TRADITIONAL LEASH FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY! Nothing good comes from your dog walking a few feet in front of you.
