I’ve really enjoyed being ‘snowed in’ over the weekend. The dogs are getting a crazy amount of socials and training, and are super fulfilled by the end of every day plus I’m getting some extra time in with my personal pack 💖

What are you up to on this snow day?

We have such exciting news to share! We have purchased an awesome 4 acre property just 30 min from our current location and will be moving Rascal HQ there as of May 2023!!

Included in the 4 acres are fully fenced yards, open fields and a trail, a large barn that will be our indoor play space for mucky weather days, and an insulated shop with heat and water that will be our kennel and training space. We are so excited to be able to give our personal and training/boarding dogs the decompression, fulfillment, and free time that they NEED to thrive and learn. We will still continue training in real world environments, the new property is just 10 minutes from a hardware store, coffee shops, and parks to take the dogs to!

With this move we will be adjusting things a bit to make things easier for you! While you can still absolutely drop off and pick up from our property (and I would love to show you around!), we will begin to offer a transport service to and from boarding and/or training for dogs along the 1-5 corridor from Woodland to Portland.

Another very exciting addition that this move will allow is us starting our Field Day Program! Think Pack Hikes, but elevated. We have been brainstorming this program for years and we are so so excited to finally be able to bring it to fruition! Field Day is a day train/enrichment/social group that we will be hosting on the property. Dogs will have fun in well matched social groups, train on behaviors that YOU are looking for help with, and have all the mental and physical enrichment they need. Field Day will also include pick up and drop off for dogs between Woodland and Portland! Start date is TBD.

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart, this would not be possible without our current and past clients and I am just forever thankful for the support that y’all have shown us over the years! I truly love my job of improving you and your dog's communication, relationship, and lives and I am so excited to continue to do so at our fullest potential with the opportunity this new space gives us.

Available for adoption due to owners change of life circumstances.

Murdock - 3 y/o AKC Lab
Murdock has gone through the four week training program and his owner has been great about continuing his on and off leash training back at home. He is goofy, exuberant, obedient (most of the time) and a real character! He does well with other dogs and would do well in a home with another calmer dog, but can sometimes get over excited and forget his obedience around other dogs. He even does well with the family cat! He has limited experience with kids, and due to his size and energy level I would recommend he go to a home with older kids (10-12 and up). Murdock would love to go to an active home where he has many zoomie opportunities and will excel in a home who continues with his training.
I am a huge fan of this dog and have known him since he was just a puppy, if I didn't already have 3 dogs we just might scoop him up! I am happy to provide an in person training session to the new owners to ease the transition and will be providing the new owners email support for life.

You can reach out to me to get in contact with his current owner. Email [email protected] and tell me a lil bit about you!

Cypress

3 y/o • Pit/Great Dane

This sweetie pie tripod is adapting quickly to everything we are throwing at her! Cypress is here to work on some leash reactivity and stranger danger behaviors. Despite the missing appendage this girl is STRONG and has pulled her mom over before, resulting in an ankle sprain. She has already worked with a few at-home trainers before, but her mom struggled with consistency and was looking for the jump start to Cypress’s training that a board and train program provides.

I am so excited to see Cypress’s confidence grow this month!!

Maisie Lu 🌸

This sweet girl is in our 2 Week board and train while her parents go on a little vacation. She is just 5 months old, so we aren’t focused on super high distraction or near perfect obedience work.

So what do puppies work on in our program?

They work on confidence building, they go lots of places, watch lots of things happen, and do lots of new things. They learn about appropriate play with other dogs and with people. They work on the super basics, how to respond to leash pressure, how to relax when back tied, and get lots of repetitions of the most important command; recall!

Puppies are fantastic learners and I love having them go through our program. A 2 Week board and train at this age primes the pup for good behavior down the road, and sets them up beautifully for more advanced obedience behaviors once they mature a bit more!

Our logo got a little update ✨

My first dog, Bug, is still our muse for the pup featured in our logo. Bug is the reason I began taking dog training seriously. He was a little terror when I first adopted him, he chewed my nice sweaters, pooped on the floor, and would bark incessantly when folks came to the house (just ask Emily, we were roommates back then). He taught me that training is a lifelong process, he’s taught me how quickly regression can happen when we (the humans) are inconsistent, and he has reinforced how rewarding it is to see insecure dogs come out of their shell.

Thanks for always being our best man Buggy Boo!

In regards to behavior modification, when to begin a dog with ecollar training is very oftentimes an art in itself. Some dogs can handle ecollar the moment the come in to the program. Some dogs need over two weeks to build a bond with us, to trust us to guide them, and to have a solid understanding of the prerequisites.

That being said, we do have a few key factors that tell us wether or not a dog is ready for ecollar training;
1. Understanding of leash pressure. We almost exclusively introduce the ecollar for recall prior to expanding the ecollar to other commands, so being able to give the dog directional pressure is imperative to understanding that ecollar stim=come back to your handler.
2. Understanding of marker words. We need to be able to give the dog feedback on their behavior in order to teach them how to make the best decisions.

Our ecollar program is longer (4-6 weeks) because I want to be able to give your dog time to acclimate to the new environment. I want your dog to develop a relationship with me. And I want your dog have an understanding of leash pressure and marker words, all before even thinking about adding an ecollar into the situation. Many dogs who go through our board and train program are ready for into ecollar training by the end of their first week. After their intro we do hundreds of repetitions with your dog to ensure they have a rock solid understanding of what the ecollar pressure means prior to their return home to you.

The benefits of a home based board and train are immense. Your dog is staying with us, in our home, experiencing normal day to day things with the helpful guide of a trainer to prepare them for their normal home life with you. We seek out all of these normal day to day experiences to utilize as a training opportunities throughout each dog’s program. This month the dogs have gone to coffee shops, hardware stores, watched us do some build out at the daycare facility (neutrality to loud construction noises), hung out at BBQs, gone camping with a large group of people, and even got the chance to experience folks staying with us from out of town. These experiences are vital to their long term success once they go back home to you.

Mila • 4 y/o • Mix

Mila graduated from our Month Long program back in June and is back with us for some boarding while her parents are out of town. We love having our grads back for boarding to see how their training is progressing! All boarding dogs get maintenance training while with us to ensure their skills are kept nice and sharp.

We are taking reservations for holiday boarding now! We filled up 2 month in advance last year so email me ASAP if you will be needing a place for your pup to stay!
