Many many years ago, as a young international student, I worked as a server in a bar in the basement of this building behind me. The original building from the 1500s was destroyed (1940s) and rebuilt (1970s). This place and job taught me a lot, including how complex human connection, communication, and culture can be— and also how differences do not have to stand in the way of cooperation. Our differences can be magic and foster personal and professional growth. These lessons remain core principles for me as a trainer. I value each individual and their experience and hope to learn with people and from them instead of teaching at them.

Sunshine has been working on her NACSW (National Association of Canine Scent Work) Nosework 1 title (last year was our first NW1 trial, and she completed 3 or the 4 searches successfully). This month, we gained her NW1 title, with a 1st place (fastest successful search out of 25 competing dogs) in Interior Building Search.

Nosework is an incredibly rewarding activity for handlers and dogs. It is a relationship building activity, and super fun to see the dog do something they are so excellent at. This is a sport that can grow with the dog into old age, keeping them mentally and physically limber. It allows the dog to gain confidence and to exercise their independent problem solving in a productive way. It creates a predictable and safe environment for dogs that are worried or overexcited about strange locations, new people, or unknown dogs. It teaches humans to listen carefully to their dogs and to understand their body language. It illustrates how diligently dogs will work with and for us, if we are willing to work with them. It builds confidence and skill and teamwork - and it is so much fun!

You and your dog are each individually unlike any other... and we love that!

genetics, family history, experiences and the ways the body moved through environments. Past and present relationships. They all leave something like patterns in us (and in our dogs). Some of them clash in the eyes of another. Or no longer serve us. Some of them are deeply hidden or unknowable. Some combinations may not work well together anymore. But they all combine to make us who we are. An original, special, singular, beautiful combination of patterns that somehow sometimes at least partially make sense, and that somehow at some point helped you learn something useful.

that’s why we say there are no bad dogs. In training we just want to help change the power and reliance on certain patterns, to the degree that we can do so — we don’t want to do cookie cutter work.

There is so much beauty in learning to see the individuality of the dog in front of you. And in other people. And even inside yourself. We like the weird ones 😘
