I FINALLY have a great example of "two dogs can be the same weight & one be unhealthy, the other healthy".
I see this argument a lot for dogs in the same household to be fed the same, without effort or consideration made per individual.

Top photo is Tobi, he is a LEAN 18kg/39.6lbs, 5yr old male. He is intact & consumes around 1600cal per day.
He is lightly worked a couple times a week, approx 16km/10miles each outing (im a bit sore with old injuries atm, else this would be much, much more).

Bottom is Buckley, who an OVERWEIGHT 18kg/39.6lbs, 8yr old male. He is desexed/neutered & is on a restricted 400cal per day.
He is minimally exercised at 1km/0.6miles per day, as he is slowly having his physical condition improved. He has had a knee reconstruction already.

Same breed, same weight, but one is a healthy ideal & one is not.

Buckley's bootcamp is going very well, with a 1kg/2.2lbs a week drop. He's estimated ideal is 16kg/35lbs.

O. Kay came to us as sweet as can be with ZERO skills. She is smart and wants to learn (that’s the lab in her) she now knows sit, come, load up ( in a kennel or car) she was timid at first, and had to learn how to go up stairs, and how to jump into a vehicle. Now she is leash trained, (although she still needs reminders and can get ahead of herself. Remember she has a baby brain) kennel trained and potty trained.
O. Kay shows her Great Pry side by being a barker, she sings the song of her people outside when she sees a person, a dog, a butterfly … she will alert you and warn them.
This sweet girl is still all puppy, its hard to remember when she’s as big as a full grown lab. She gets the zoomies and chews up things left out, she will counter surf, she needs naps and gets grumpy when tired.
She is a near exact cross section of her breed mix. GP: huge, fluffy, deep bark, skeptical upon first meeting.
Lab: goofy, mouthy, friendly (after meeting), food motivated, happy.
And don’t forget the typical puppy behaviors for her age: curious, underfoot, chewing, can become overstimulated or nervous, forgetful, all legs, baby.

O.Kay will need a family that won’t mind picking up after themselves, putting food high up out of reach, wants to work her body and her brain, and that will want to cuddle and can handle the adventures of this blend of smart, loud, BIG, lovey, happy, for the love of barking breed.

Carlie is a happy, super smart young lab. She has shown us she shouldn’t live with other animals and would thrive with an active owner- Hiking? Running? She’s going to be the best adventure buddy!
*Carlie without warning bites other dogs, she is fantastic with humans, loves to learn and cuddle.
She loves to be outdoors, being leash, kennel, and muzzle trained she’s a dream to take out and about.
Carlie knows sit, come, “kennel”, shake, & sit pretty.
She’s still learning fetch. Loves sticks. She loves the water and loves swims. Someone need a boat dog?
Carlie is very food motivated, and wants to learn! Using her meals to reinforce good behavior and training has been fun and she learns everything very quickly. She rides great in the car, chews on a bully stick, smells outside or sleeps.
*Carlie LOVES to play and run with other dogs, she just wears her muzzle and does amazing! The muzzle means freedoms to her!
Carlie wants to get into the trash and counter surf so a family that puts all food away is a must.

So many are confused about this. They see training as something which limits and subtracts from the dog’s life/fun/freedom.

It’s actually the reverse.
Proper training gives the dog a bigger life, more fun, and far more freedom.

The only things it limits and subtracts are the problem behaviors and the anxious/stressed state of mind which are preventing you and your dog from living the best life possible.

As Jocko says, “Discipline equals freedom.”, and I promise this concept applies just as much to your dog as it does to you. ❤️
