Yesterday we were contacted about a 10 week old puppy brought into an emergency clinic after being found with his hips stuck in a wire kennel.
Purchased days earlier from a breeder in the Midwest by well-meaning Oregon residents on a trip, they found him after an unknown amount of time and once they did, he wasn't able to use his hind legs. Surrendering him before any workup was done, citing the inability to give supportive care even if financial assistance was provided, the clinic then had two options: euthanize or reach out to rescue. We're glad they chose the latter.
Radiographs came back clean and the emergency vet believes the injury is a lot of soft tissue swelling around the spine. Little buddy is moving his back paws and wagging his tail but still having trouble standing and urinating on his own, so it'll be strict bedrest for the next few weeks to allow the swelling to go down.
This case reminds us there is still a lot of big-picture work to be done around breeding practices, responsibly acquiring puppies, and the philosophical debate of sacrificing the principles of many to save the one, but for today we're responding to the situation in front of us — and we're saying yes thanks to Robbie's Fund, which allows us to take on dogs with known medical needs to get them the care they deserve.
We aren't totally sure what's next for this guy but do know he'll be getting whatever he needs from here on out thanks to all of you.
Welcome to the Good Life, Nimbus; donate now to help us keep saving cloud puffs like him.

Welcome to the Good Life, Hotrod.
We are *so* excited to finally share our big news.
After rescuing 1275 dogs since launching in 2015, getting them first into foster and then forever homes, we have reached the limit of what we can do without a home of our own. So we are launching our first capital campaign, Welcome to the Good Life, for an adoption center and community space.
We want to save even more lives who need us, so now we need YOUR help making that dream a reality. We know that with a brick and mortar not for the dogs to live, but for us to conduct all aspects of our operations, we can work more efficiently and therefore help more animals and the humans who love them.
Thanks to our early supporters and Saturday’s Bone Ball attendees, we have already reached 2/3 of our $150,000 goal. Now we need all of you to take us home.

Bone Ball 2021
Join us virtually for Bone Ball 2021 - Welcome to the Good Life.
We have some big news to announce! Program begins at 7:30 PST.
Today is our last transport with Dog Is My CoPilot, Inc. and El Paso Animal Services for the year.
Weather prevents us from flying later than October, as even today we're having to pivot, rent a van and send a small team 2 hours away because the conditions are too bad to get into Troutdale as usual.
Which means it's also our last opportunity to easily and cost-effectively rescue as many dogs as possible, especially big dogs, because DIMC doesn't charge or have weight and breed limits.
So despite this being our 13th flight since late May, welcoming 25ish dogs each time, and being (and seeing others be) more exhausted and squeezed than ever before, our folks dug deep and said yes to 30 new kids just in time for Halloween.
Like this *sweet* boy who, at 70lbs. and underweight, was taking up a lot of space and out of time. Don't worry, Twix buddy, you're safe and this is not a trick -- just get ready for some treats.
Donate to make sure there's enough to go around for all the new dogs.
The theme of the week is hot — damn hot! Real hot! So it seems time for a Hotrod update.
After arriving last week, Hotrod was seen by a specialist for an MRI and multiple biopsies of his spine. The results came back with a diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis -- also known as Valley Fever, a fungal disease caused by a soil fungus primarily found in the SW US (like Texas). We aren’t sure exactly how long Hotrod has been like this but the guess is a while now, as the disease has run rampant on his system, with a large mass of inflammation compressing his vertebrae that's causing paralysis.
The good news is Hotrod was started on a heavy medication regiment right away and already seems to be feeling better with increased appetite, the intermittent ability to stand, and overall letting his sweet and goofy personality come through. We are cautiously optimistic he will have a good prognosis and quality of life despite needing to be on anti-fungal treatment forever.
What we know for sure is he's worth every penny it takes to give him the life he's always deserved, free from disease and discomfort. Thanks to all those who joined our Mended by Members membership drive last week (138 new ones!) we have what we need to get Hotrod what *he* needs. ...like a YouTube channel.
Hotrod went to see specialist Dr. Kline at VCA Northwest Vet Specialists today and now can’t remember where he parked the car.
This sweet buddy gets the need for speed every time he’s strapped to his wheels and loves getting to move. He spent the day receiving a full work up (including MRIs) so we can try and figure out what’s going on with him.
His vet bills alone are already in the $5k range and we don’t even have a diagnosis yet, so if you’ve been on the fence about joining our Mended by Members membership drive — now’s the time.
Our members are the reason we could say yes to Hotrod despite not knowing his needs and promise we’d get him the care he deserves. We do this for all our dogs and love when we get to for the medically urgent ones needing extra support.
Couldn’t imagine a more worthy dog than Hotrod with his zest for life in his hot wheels. Become a member to ensure we always say yes to the ones who need us most.
