A truly spectacular series of long jumps, and even a high jump/hurdle entry! How do we even judge these??
Our Track & FIELD sprinters had a variety of truly admirable athletes... but for pure determination, we've got to give it to Margot (see photo #4 and you'll know what we mean).
And the 🏅 on the balance beam goes to... Nutmeg!
And finally, here are the medalists for this year’s SSF Puppy Olympics! Magpie took bronze🥉, Juniper silver🥈, and Luna snatched up the gold🥇🏆! We’re very proud of these little ladies 🎉
Thanks for celebrating with us, and enjoy the rest of the 2024 Olympics!
Our athletes stopped by the Louvre for a pre-event photo op (Juniper chose to rest, instead) and got special permission to pose with the Mona Lisa. How could anyone say no to these faces?

Happy Friday from us and Nutmeg!! Stay cool, friends 😎
Dogs on a bench, so cute!! But did you know it's more than just a fun photo??
✨First, we use a cue for dogs to jump up to help them discriminate between when it's appropriate to jump on something and when it's not (like your couch, bed, etc).
✨This also helps build confidence and helps pups learn their body mechanics by getting up and balancing on different surfaces.
✨It helps proof their "stay" cue.
✨A whole new vantage point means even more distractions, so we're also working on their ability to focus and respond when they see something exciting.
What fun things have you taught your dog to balance on??
It's a ! ✨✨
Let's work on roll over:
- Position your dog into a down.
- Place a treat in front of their nose and, while letting them nibble on it, raise it above and behind one of their shoulders. Keep it there as they follow your hand.
- Mark as soon as they complete the roll and reward.
- If your dog is consistently reverting to the standard down position, start rewarding for smaller approximations of their head going over their shoulder.
- Experiment with rolling different ways. All dogs have a preference on which side they're more comfortable starting on.
Let's work with multiple dogs:
- Have a settle/wait/stay cue in place.
- Position one dog in the settle position while you work with the other dog.
- Make sure to intermittently reward the other dog so they are reinforced for waiting. You might need to increase the rate of reinforcement if they are still building impulse control or start to get antsy.
- Keep the sessions short and sweet!

Clear, consistent, and kind leadership in training gets results!! Henry and Tulip are regulars here at SSF. In this video, I didn't ask for a sit or a stay. They both decided this on themselves, even with dogs running and playing in the background!! This was made possible by a reinforcement history of default sit (sit = rewards) and focus around distractions, as well as having a relationship built on trust and engagement - we love to play and interact with our dogs!
Last week we took a poll on 4 different training exercises, and the results are in! Impulse Control received the most votes. Here we share one of our favorite cues: "leave it." Where can you use this? Around squirrels, food on the table, trash on the sidewalk... The options are limitless! Check our stories for more impulse control examples, and stay tuned for our next poll!! Our Sit Stay Fitters have been enjoying the sunshine we've received during the last week! But it's not all just fun and games.. we've got some serious training going on (but yes, we do prioritize making training FUN)! We've got pups working on: ✅️ Walking through Crowds in Busy Areas ✅️Down-Stays in a Public Space ✅️Building Recall and Impulse Control Offleash ✅️Loose-Leash-Walking ✅️Confidence-Building 🌞We'd love to see photos of your sunny pup!!
At SSF we love offleash adventures! With recall being one of the most requested training goals, we are more than happy to help your pup become reliable when given freedom. Bodhi shows off an easy recall exercise that we use to get pups ready for offleash activity. When we're ready to take it to the real world, a longline and a group of offleash veteran dogs ensure safety, as well as fun guidance! We always bring treats and praise too 😄

Happy Thanksgiving! 🍁 We are hoping you all enjoyed a relaxing day with family and friends, 2 legged & 4. We are grateful for all of you 💕🐶🐾
Are you dealing with more barking or chewing lately? Or just a dog that is constantly in your business? Our #quarantine tip this week is skip the food dish! Use puzzle toys to give your dog something more to do than just eat their food out of their dish in 30 seconds!

LET’S STATION! When working on building a solid sit/down stay, incorporating stationing can be a valuable tool! In our experience, providing a platform, towel, bed, etc. can help a pup pick up on the concept of remaining in a position quickly. In this video, Stevie made every choice on her own. We did not ask her to go to the station, nor did we ask her to sit. Instead, we simply marked and reinforced every glance towards the station, then we reinforced every accidental step on the station, then I raised my criteria to be two feet on, and finally Stevie made the choice to offer me a sit on the station. I mean, why wouldn’t she?! As far as she is concerned this “station” is a magical destination... a destination that makes treats fall from the sky when she engages with it. By using these techniques (known as shaping) we can be certain that Stevie is clear about what it is that we are asking. There is no need for luring (this can be difficult to fade), there are no awkward hand gestures (these can make it difficult to add distance), and there is no frustration on our end as our only task is to mark/reinforce the behaviors that we think are valuable. By offering choice in training we hope to empower Stevie, we hope to allow her the understanding that she is in control of her environment, that she can manipulate the environment to receive things she deems valuable, and that training with us is fun. Once fluent, this foundation behavior of targeting a station can be used to keep a pup from jumping up on houseguests, to keep a begging pup away from the dinner table, to provide your pup a “safe space” when the baby is crawling/playing, or to show your pup where you would like them to hang out when you are at the coffee shop/brewery. Does your pup jump all over your visitors? Are you tired of your pup door dashing? Do you need professional guidance to help attain your training goals? Well we are here to help, so reach out today!
