2024 birthday adventuring trip day #8: manzanita (& neakahnie-manzanita state park) (part 1 - landscape)

i wandered down the main commercial thoroughfare of manzanita, stopping in a couple shops; found more fun-covered journals. it started raining a bit; it wasn't falling hard & fast from the sky, but the wind has it hitting you hard & fast & in ~10 min., i was as soaked as i would be in a 30 min. dog walk. and there were still a couple of crazy fu***rs in the water, sans full body wet (or dry) suits. i was still drenched & cold when i parked next to neakahnie-manzanita state park, so the last pic is the only one you get of it (it's basically the same beach as manzanita beach, only with the added protection of being a state park).

started on a trail in elk meadows that took me directly into the forested half of nehalem bay state park. came across what looked like a holly, not bush, tree, & then past more with holly berries. and those little yellow flowers on actual green bushes instead of the dead looking bushes i usually see them on.

i took the jetty trail out to the near end of the jetty with a couple horse trails as a mini detour. which i probably shouldn't have done due to the time. but then, i wouldn't have found this perfect baby crab specimen! look at it! it's amazing! 'cause by the time i made it to the beach, i had less than an hour to traverse the 2 miles back to my car before dusk (when day use parking closes). this was no casual walk on the beach, i was hauling as much ass as i could - y'all, i even ran! i ran until two equestrians approached me asking to take their picture. at least i could still enjoy another gorgeous sunset for a few brief moments.

2024 birthday adventuring trip day #7: wheeler

i stopped in wheeler to check out wheeler station antiques. there are some cool items in this shop, including this t-shirt, but mostly just what you'd expect to see in an "antiques & collectibles" shop. it isn't even the only one on this street (there are 3 right next to each other). the maze-like interior of the building is more interesting than the merch, though. heart of cartm had a lot of cool things, including new items made from old trash (they have a halter top dress made out of 2017 total eclipse glasses). across the street is their waterfront park & wildlife viewing area. the only wildlife are birds (birds are cool, but i can see all these birds in the portland area 🤷🏼‍♀️).

another adventure kitty! daddy carried kitty to the beach & kitty barely moved. i later saw kitty being carried again. i found - i think - a wolf eel carcass, which is kinda cool since i've only ever seen them in captivity. i also found a sea star that didn't look quite dead, so i threw it back in the water.

this refurbished caboose is in rockaway beach. every other time i've driven past here, there was a tiny train stopped just north of it on these tracks. clearly, one can purchase tickets to ride it as it is gone now & i briefly saw it heading back south as i was leaving my next adventuring location.

not much to say about this open air museum. the old trains (a couple engines, a caboose, passenger cabins from different eras (one's windows are decorated with stained glass), etc.) are really cool. there's also some old buildings & equipment overgrown with blackberry bushes.

2024 birthday adventuring trip day #7: garibaldi maritime museum (part 2 - portrait)

mostly some of the cool items they have on display, including an otter pelt under plexiglass & one you can touch - it's *very* soft! there's also the story behind the big "g" - did you know they have a big "g"? i didn't, but i'm also usually only looking out at the water of the old smokestack when i'm driving through. along with the story depicted on the korean screen along with the first panel.

2024 birthday adventuring trip day #7: garibaldi maritime museum (part 1 - landscape)

this museum is mostly dedicated to garibaldi & captain robert gray. did you know there are trollers & trawlers? and i guys the difference is lines vs. nets? they even have a children's corner where kids can dress up & play with stuff. in their rentable activity space has a beautiful mother of pearl & alabaster on black lacquer screen that was gifted to lt. col. charles m. parkin, jr. by the people of pusan, korea for his help in their recovery after they were hit by a typhoon in 1959. it contains a poem about korean navel hero admiral yi (the next part will contain the details).

i ended my day with dinner at the seaside brewing co. for the atmosphere. here's my caesar salad & grilled cheese (what do you expect, it's a brewery on the coast; it's not like they have many vegetarian options 😜), along with a home brewed root beer & my souvenir pint glass.

2024 birthday adventuring trip day #6: painted rock beach

beautifully & crudely painted rocks here all in equal glory. a lot of r.i.p. memorial rocks, too (there's even one decorated in stickers). so, grab your paints, come on out, pick a rock, paint it to your hearts content, & leave it. or paint a rock at home, bring it out, & leave it.

this is where i decided to take in the sunset & found the perfect way to frame it. then got absorbed in posting my adventures to i.g., i missed taking pics of the actual setting. oh well, plenty more sunset opportunities to come.

2024 birthday adventuring trip day #6: bay city

going a bit out of order here. i had bay city on my "want to go" list & i'm pretty sure it was for this mural. i stopped here after kilchis. my babies were pooped & look! they're cuddling again! at my feet & they look like a yin yang ☯️ 😻

there's not much in bay city, but it would be a wonderful place to experience the sunset.

2024 birthday adventuring trip day #6: the big cedar

another species "champion". this 154' tall western red cedar is 50' in circumference & 800-1200 years old. it has even survived a tsunami! this would have been a better path to take the adventure kitties in a walk in their stroller. it was entirely boardwalk & less expansive. oh, & i saw a chipmunk! they're native to oregon, yet i rarely ever see any, but those grey squirrels you see everywhere are an invasive species. i also what, appears to me, to be a [large bird] bird nest.

i fu***ng saw a bald eagle! (at the historical marker)

there were some tide pools at the graces, but not a great variety of life: seaweed, sea grass, sea anemones, & barnacles. the sea grass was really pretty under the water with the sun shining on it, though.

2024 birthday adventuring trip day #6: kilchis point reserve (part 1 - landscape)

kilchis point is, i guess, a preserved wetland that used to be owned by a lumber tycoon dude. since it looked like this park had a nice paved path in its entirety, i decided to take the babies out for a stroll. this is an interpretive park & as much as i love interpretive plaques & reading them, i had to impatient kitties with me & they did distract from enjoying the nature. so, i just took pics of all of them. there's also a ton of benches throughout the park, including a couple places where there's a bunch arranged for an audience. finally, there's a bird watching station with bird watching tips plaques (i didn't take pics of those).

just some of the rooms in the cottage including children's, men's, & woman's boarding rooms (one of the owners used it as a boarding house). another owner had a lady's hat making shop (i.e. millinery - new word for me) in house (some of the items in that room are original).

2024 birthday adventuring trip day #5: seaside museum & historical society (part 1 - profile)

here we have pics showing how the whole oregon coast has been a public hwy (& therefore are no private beaches) since 1913 (a hotel in either seaside or lincoln city tried to privatize the beach along their property once & the governor himself (i forget his name) came & protested it until they took down the barriers. there's also a description of "dragging the gut" that teens did in the 50s & 60s; teens were still doing it in the 90s & they're probably still doing it today. some cool info on l & c exp. salt making camp from an indigenous woman & cool newspaper printing equipment. finally, a description of a preventable devastating forest fire all because some dude "had" to run one more log through the machinery before shutting down after being warned about the extremely dry conditions. fu***ng capitalism.

mon. was a BIG day for me & my beast! two weeks ago marked the 10-year deathiversary of my oldest brother, greg piper. so, i'm sharing this video again - everywhere. why? because.... from the childhood abuse (our parents feared for my safety & we weren't allowed to be left alone together & three of his friends apologized to me years later for letting him treat me the way he did because they knew it was wrong. he's the reason i stopped talking when i was 8, was clinically depressed by the time i was 10, almost committed suicide when i was 12, & the main reason i was suicidal at 17 - my philandering paternal unit & his mistress, now wife, take 2nd & 3rd; then there was the dickish virgin-whore bastard who stepped on my hand while i clung to the edge of my grave (fun times)) to reconciliation (it's amazing what a heartfelt apology can do) to one of my best friends & first mma coach to watching him take his final breath, no one has had a greater influence on my life than him. i am who i am today mostly because of him. no, you don't have to watch & listen to this video, but i hope you do at least once. i do need to rerecord the songs, though. for some reason, the person who recorded this felt the piano wasn't all that important - i'm a pianist, dammit!
