12/30/2024

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1), also known as Avian Flu, is a virus that is highly contagious and often fatal in poultry. While humans can contract the virus, it is typically not severe and causes mild or no symptoms. Since May 2022, HPAI H5N1 has affected multiple commercial and backyard poultry flocks in Oregon. Additionally, cats and dogs can be susceptible to the virus, although dogs seem to be less affected than cats.

The Oregon State Veterinary Medical Association recommends the following precautions to help prevent the spread of HPAI and other diseases:
• Avoid consuming raw or undercooked meat or dairy products.
• Limit contact with sick or dead animals.
• Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw animal products or coming into contact with sick/dead animals.
• Report sick or dead birds to the ODA at 503-986-4711.
• Keep pets and poultry away from wild waterfowl.

If your cat or dog shows any of the following symptoms, seek veterinary care promptly:
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Red or inflamed eyes
• Discharge from the eyes or nose
• Difficulty breathing
• Neurological symptoms (e.g., tremors, seizures, incoordination, or blindness)

As always, we are here to answer any specific questions or concerns you may have about your beloved companions. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us for guidance.

Each year, our clients send in photos of their beloved pets of the past for us to display on lit trees outside of the clinic through the start of the new year. Pet Diabetes Awareness 🐾🩺

Did you know? November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month! Here are some important facts to keep your furry friends healthy:

🔹 Diabetes in pets is more common than you think, affecting 1 in every 300 dogs and 1 in every 230 cats.
🔹 Symptoms to watch for: increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss despite a good appetite, and lethargy.
🔹 Early detection is key! With proper management, including insulin therapy, a healthy diet, and regular vet visits, diabetic pets can lead happy lives.
🔹 Pets are more likely to develop diabetes if they’re overweight, older, or have a genetic predisposition.

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a check-up with your vet right away!
