It’s #FearFreeFriday - let’s talk Fear Free! Today’s topic: NAIL TRIMS FOR CATS. Regular nail trims on your cat can help prevent destructive clawing, as well as help keep their nails from getting snagged or torn. If you’re a cat owner, you know how stressed cats can get when they hook themselves onto their scratch post or your couch and can’t get their nails unstuck! The most important thing to remember is making sure your cat is comfortable at every step of the trimming process. If they are already paw-aversive, it may take several weeks for you to be able to complete a nail trim successfully! Using PVPs (pre-visit pharmaceuticals), such as Gabapentin, can help relax your cat and decrease anxiety and stress. High value food bribes, like baby food, yogurt, canned tuna, or liver pate, can help your feline friend sit still during the process. Here, we have Sir Rasputin demonstrating the Fear Free nail trim process. Raspy is on Gabapentin, as the clinic environment elevates his FAS (fear, anxiety, and stress). As you can see, the anti-anxiety medication, in conjunction with baby food snacks, allows technician assistant Savvy to carefully trim his nails with little to no restraint. Because a cat’s claws are retracted when at rest, Savvy is applying gentle pressure at the base of the nail to get his claws to extend. A few seconds of adjustment and Raspy allows the treatment! Desensitizing your feline friend is most important! Play with their paws and work on applying gentle pressure to the paw pads when they are relaxed at home. Reward them repeatedly to encourage them to stay still and happy! My, oh, MITE. Check out these ear mites that we found under the microscope today! Mites are not visible to the naked eye. Clinical signs of a mite infestation can include: ear irritation, excessive grooming of the area, dark discharge from the ear, and/or skin lesions. These are very easily treated by medication prescribed by your doctor, including some flea control medication. Mites are highly contagious, and we most often find in barn and outdoor/rescue animals. #BFPCfamily #vetmed #pethealth #earmites
