Today we are deeply and profoundly mourning the loss of Mitchell the MeowSpace cat. At 18+ years old, Mitchell has lived an amazingly healthy life, and when on Saturday we noticed his breathing quite labored, we kept watch over him all night, then decided to take him to the ER early Sunday morning. After a thorough exam determined he had either respiratory or heart failure, we asked what could be done. The answer was medication 3 times a day for the rest of his life, which could mean days, weeks or months (not more than 6 months). He HATED and fought us viciously every morning when we gave him liquid Gabapentin for arthritis. He would certainly dread 3 daily battles of us forcing meds down his throat.
At 6 months old, when he adopted us, we promised to love him, care for him properly at any cost, and not force him into a miserable existence. We promised him a gentle and painless transition over the rainbow bridge when the time came.
So Sunday morning we said our very painful goodbyes and held him close and kissed him as our very gentle and kind vet administered a medication to put him into a deep sleep, followed by the medication to free him from this world.
Mitchell adopting us changed our lives utterly. We had never been owned by a cat before—just dogs—and the new education opened up love neither of us knew even existed. When our two old dogs crossed the rainbow bridge, Mitch was so lonely that we decided to open our home to another cat, who turned out to be Flopsie. The two of them bonded thoroughly and lived a beautiful 14 year together before she passed away. She had been a serious overeater and we needed to find a way to keep her away from Mitchell’s food. There was no good answer, and I had an idea. Corey Bruesch, our son, materialized my idea by building the first MeowSpace. The rest is, as we say, history. Life and livelihood changed by a funny little orange cat with attitude.
Mitchell was named after the street where he found us. Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that he loved having his nose covered by blankets, human hands or arms or legs or necks, or other pets. He will continue to be the MeowSpace frontman. www.MeowSpace.biz.
