I know I might not seem like a big deal but having the right equipment definitely makes training easier. The devil is in the details.
If something is not convenient or a pain to handle it can quickly demotivate us. This happens to us too. We prefer our equipment to be easy to use.
Good equipped also ensures we are communicating effectively and efficiently with our dogs. Again, if we are fumbling it can affect the training.
This standard 6ft leash is a great leash. Strong, durable, and easy to hold and handle. It’s very versatile.
We have a link to this in our highlights under fav. tools and we will have another link in the highlights for new dog owners.

The dark side of dog patios.
I often see videos showing and telling you things you should do before taking your dog a dog friendly patio to hang out. They talk about walks, and tiring your dog out, holding them accountable. Teaching solid obedience and having them practice being calm in other areas. I get all that.
But I never hear, “even when you do all this and your dog is coachable in situations like you still gotta watch out for…”
My rant lol, talks about the not talked about enough side. I share a couple stories about what happened when I took my dogs to a dog friendly place. I get that it can be great to bring your dog and hang out with them. I think it’s also important to know that it can be dangerous.
I tell my clients to proceed with caution. Know before you go. See what it looks like on a busy day and what the dogs are doing there. It’s not full proof but I bet you could get a lot of information about to expect and then make an informed decision about whether or not your dog would benefit from this outing.
What have your experiences been like at dog friendly spots?

From working with so many reactive dogs we can see that the majority of them have low confidence.
Sure there are dogs that get reactive out of the frustration from excitement. Those dogs can be generally friendly but they get reactive because they can’t do something they want to do.
The majority we see are very unsure. You can see their tails tuck, heads on a swivel, hyper aware of the surroundings. This is both inside the home and outside home.
Part of the recipe for working on reactivity is building your dog’s confidence. I know we have said this before, but working on reactivity is a lot more than just the reactivity.
The reactive outburst is a SYMPTOM of an underlying issue.
Exposure is one to build confidence. And no, it doesn’t mean more exposure to dogs. That is part of it but can come later.
Exposure to different to environments, different sounds, textures, surfaces, obstacles etc. can all help to build confidence in your dog and trust in you.
This all culminates into building a better relationship with your dog so that you can be in a better position to help your dog when they need it.

YOU are the best teacher for your dog.
I would say every owner feels guilty about their dog’s behavior. They always say “I know I am the problem”. Being the problem seems to be the focus.
I want you to know that you can also be the SOLUTION. I think it is good to be able to recognize that there is a problem. That’s the first step to change. Taking OWNERSHIP.
After that though we need to shift the focus from problem to solution.
You getting on the phone with me is the first to step change. And usually the hardest. It’s easy to keep complaining about the problems.
Dog owners, you are more capable than you realize. Even with your busy lives. YOU CAN TRAIN YOUR DOG 🐕
With a little bit of effort you can be the conduit to change your dog needs.
We can help you get there. Whether our in home private lessons or board and train program we can assist you in achieving what you want with your dog.
If you’re ready for change, comment “SOLUTION” and I can you send you a link to set up a free phone consultation.

Just chill.
Reactivity is just a symptom of an excited and over stimulated mind. Your dog is so amped up that every step forward just increases the over stimulation and excitement.
This combination can result in hard pulling at the best and reactivity at the worst.
How do calm the mind?
Well there’s inside work like place command to teach your dog to chill (which we would highly encourage).
But basically just chill. When you open your front door. Just chill. Stand there for a few minutes then go back inside. Then come back to the door.
You want to see your dog go from constant scanning check in with you. I’m not talking extreme eye contact. Just moments of checking in.
This will slow your dog’s brain down, make you part of the conversation and put them in a better headspace to listen a little better.
The moment you feel your dog rising, just chill. Chill everywhere and work your dog’s brain. It’s hard to be still.
Will you give this a try?

We had a fantastic final lesson with Norby and her family.
Over the course of our 5 lessons we worked on several areas.
First was creating clear communication. Making sure we can tell Norby when she is on the right path and when she is not.
After establishing a fundamental communication system we could then start tackle areas of struggle. For them the door was a big one.
Being able to communicate clearly really helped with door protocols and managing guest interactions. Norby is a sweetheart but she can get overexcited which can lead to jumping up.
After that we discussed her reactivity on walks and how first manage the excitement before and during. As well as what to look for on the walk.
We also talked fulfillment activities so Norby can get those instincts out. All in all it was about having a balance between structured time and loose time.
It was great meeting and working with them and now it’s time for group class so they can continue working and building their skills.

Our essentials to obedience training just dropped!!
We are pretty stoked on this one!
This course teaches YOU how to train your dog in the following obedience commands PLACE, SIT, and DOWN.
This is perfect for first time dog owners as it teaches you from the beginning. What you get is.
✅ Luring your dog around - This teaches you how to get your dog moving with you and understanding how to follow the food.
✅ Luring into behaviors sit, place, and down.
✅ Adding the leash into these commands.
✅ When to add your GOOD and NOPE markers
- Adding distractions to your training
The other cool thing is these videos were filmed with client dogs during their board and train so there is nuance based on what the dogs were giving us. This gives you some extra insight that can be applies to your dog.

Hello everyone! My name is Ruben.
Before starting Kindred Dog PDX I was a dog owner first.
I got my first dog when I was 19 years old. Due to living situations he went to live my parents. I wouldn’t have another dog until I was about 25. She was a French bulldog named Maayawa. She was such a great dog. After her came Oso and then Lucy. Oso showed me the importance of training and lifestyle adjustments in order for the dogs in the house to thrive.
To say I was in over my head with Oso is an understatement. Oso showed me that he needed more than just love. He was going after the other animals in the house and was very difficult to handle and manage when both inside the house and outside the house.
It was a major pain point for years. It wasn’t for lack of trying. I was reading, hiring trainers, watching videos. While some things helped there was always a gap.
As time went on I saw there was something missing here for people with difficult dogs. I went on to learn how to work with these kinds of dogs and help their owners.
Kindred Dog PDX came to life in 2014 and it’s been amazing to witness the growth of the business and all the dogs over the years.
So take a look around. We have tons of videos here and our YouTube page. We have also created an online training courses that teaches you how to start working with your dog and get the problem behaviors to stop.
Thanks for stopping by!

Socialization is not just playing with other dogs interacting with people. While that is an element, we have learned that socialization is actually the ability to exist in an environment, hear sounds, see dogs, see people and actually be neutral around these things.
Most of the time we see dogs who can be social with dogs but because their only interactions with dogs is playing with them, when they can’t, they get reactive. The same goes for people. These same dogs can be social but are nervous wrecks in new environments because they weren’t show how to exist in new places. They buckle when unexpected sounds show up.
So while yes you should have your dog around dogs and people (in a structured way) we should be emphasizing the same for environmental socialization.

The three things I wish I knew sooner to have a more enjoyable walk.
It’s true, we struggled. We only struggled because I wasn’t equipped on the tools and knowledge on how to help my dogs and myself. You only know what you know. Well now I can share our knowledge so that you don’t have to struggle too much. Even with these in place it still takes practice but these make the practice more enjoyable.
Tools matter. If you have little to no control over your dog you won’t be in a position to teach them. This hold especially true for any reactive business. Tools help you communicate. Some more than others. So depending on what your goals are, tools will absolutely matter. If you are currently struggling, it may be time to try something new.
Practice. Yes, practicing the walk is crucial. We used to try and just go for a walk and then be annoyed that our dogs just pulled the whole time. They likely got better as the walk went on but that first 20 minutes was enough to call it quits. After learning about how dogs perceive things we learned that it is more beneficial to walk in your house first. Then go the front of your house walking 20 steps in one direction and then 20 steps in the other. We learned that it wasn’t about going somewhere but more about investing the time in practicing. This is how your dog will learn what the expectation is.
Generalizing. Dog’s don’t generalize well. So just because you get a good walk in your neighborhood doesn’t mean you’ll get that same level at the park, or another neighborhood. This is where you pack your dog in the car and drive them to practice the walk somewhere else. Doing this will help them see your expectation for the walk and not have them guessing. Doing this will also make your neighborhood walk better.
P.S. Check out our Good to Great walk series that can help get you to a great walk. Link is in our bio

We have had a bunch of new followers to the page so we figured it was time to re-introduce ourselves. Welcome to the page! I hope you find it helpful on your training journey!
Hey there, I’m Shane – a dog owner, trainer, and human coach. For the past nine years, I’ve been deeply immersed in the art of dog training, a journey that began when I adopted my canine companion back in 2015 while living in Guadalajara Mexico. Drawing from past experiences with dogs, I was determined to approach training with a fresh perspective.
Prior to welcoming my current furry friend into my life, I invested time in studying various training methodologies, swiftly putting theory into practice. Eager to expand my expertise, I’ve attended numerous seminars led by renowned trainers, constantly refining my skills to better serve our clients. Fluent in Spanish with over 16 years of practice, I effortlessly navigate bilingual environments.
When I’m not shaping canine behavior or enjoying playful moments with my dog Pulga, you’ll find me on the mats of my Jiu-Jitsu class – a passion I’ve pursued for eight years. Alongside my fiancé, I cherish moments spent enjoying the serenity of the woods and mountains during summer camping trips, escaping the hustle and bustle of city life.
Maintaining a perpetual student mindset, I remain open to new ideas and opportunities for growth across all aspects of life. Whether it’s mastering the intricacies of dog training, perfecting my Jiu-Jitsu techniques, nurturing relationships, or preparing for the role of fatherhood, I’m driven to excel in every endeavor. As I anticipate the arrival of my son, I aspire to be the best possible role model, empowering him to embrace life’s journey with courage and purpose.

Odin and Nero have been reunited after their refresher board and train with us.
During their stay we brushed up on the structure and got them back into the groove. It is not uncommon that when our dogs are doing well that we tend to slide on keeping up with the rules that help our dogs be the best versions of themselves.
We opted to take the dogs to their home so we can chat and go through what to look for as they navigate life back at home and keep the good stuff going.
They weren’t super tough and they know all the commands it was just a matter of little allowances sn*******ng over time.
The good news is that all this can be remedied. We are going to back to a little tighter household and as they see better stuff they can start to trickle the little things. With a solid baseline established they can see clearly what kind of privilegies lead to what. They will be able to see how those affect the dogs.
For those reading this, if you’re experiencing issues. Try tightening up on the structure and see what happens. Often times that is the missing piece.
The dogs were stoked be home and they were already settling nicely.

Throwback to #2017 when I was in LA for 3 months interning with The Good Dog.
This was at school nearby. The fires were bad when I was there. It wasn’t super smokey where we were but you could definitely see it in the sky.
That was my first taste of LA and kinda living there. It wasn’t terrible and I did enjoy my time there but I still think I prefer the .

Every dog should have these skills mastered. Being able to come when called, relaxing in a particular environment, and knowing how to respond to the leash can open up your dogs world by allowing to be included in your life more. They can help take the stress away of not knowing what your dog will do next. These skills provide a level of communication but also expectation which can help give guidance through out their life.

Right now we are all still feeling the affects of the latest winter storm. With everything still ice it is dangerous to be outside with the dog, so being limited to staying indoors can seem challenging for us and our dogs. However, there are things we can do (mentioned above).
Everything can be scaled from simple to challenging, they can be short in duration and some can be long in duration.
One of the main focus points when doing a lot of inside work is getting the dog to think and focus. Mental energy combined with physical can really help out with giving the dog something to do and not having them being bored all day until the ice melts away and the outside world opens up again.

Where you are at when you decide to start working on things is going to be your starting point. You don’t have to wait till something else happens or some sort of circumstance to change, training can start whenever and however. Most of the time most folks don’t realize training already started when they brought the dog into their home, but when they decide to actively train their dog, that is where they are starting. The dog may know some things or it may know nothing. Recognize that starting point and being honest with yourself and your dog is going to play a huge role. They maybe a beginner or they could be at an intermediate stage but don’t be afraid to go back to basics to get a better understanding and you may be surprised at how fast they move forward.

The long line is probably one of the most valuable tools. It keeps a connection to the handler but also fades out the closeness of the handler and the ability of hand holding.
It can give the dog a sense of freedom to be able to do more of what they love to do, for example, to run or explore as they please but yet the handler is able to give information as needed.
Just like any other tool, the long line takes practice. It is a long leash that opens up many options for the dog and if you are not prepared you can be taken by surprise. However, once you develop a skill for it, it can become a great option until you are ready to unclip the leash entirely.
So don’t move too fast and practice your long line skills so you can be confident and ready when it is time to be fully off leash.
