Today we wrapped up celebrating Veterinary Technician Week, and while its impossible to properly explain and highlight all that a vet tech does each day, I do want to acknowledge an important part of what our team does (in addition to their 100 other skills!) -
Our clinic is so proud to be able to provide care to a patient base that heavily consists of very anxious, reactive, and sometimes untouchable patients, and our technician team is a huge reason why this is possible.
The spectrum of an animals comfort at the vet is vast, and sometimes a mild oral sedative works great for a nervous patient, but sometimes a heavier sedation is needed. This can range from injections for those who tolerate it, or other techniques for the ones who don’t.
Caring for these patients takes a long time. Hours. It is a collaborative visit between that animal guardian and our medical team, and while we dedicate only a small handful of appointments for these each week, it’s because that one patient is our technician’s *only* priority the entire time they are here.
Managing these visits takes a lot of patience, compassion, and dedication; there are personal safety risks, patient adverse reactions, and sometimes the realization that the plan just isn’t working, and we will need to try again another day.
It can be a lot, but when that fearful animal is able to get a thorough exam and any medical care they need, it is a wonderful feeling for everyone involved.
We love celebrating our veterinary technicians; they are motivated not only because they are passionate about vet med, but they’re also strongly commited to successfully treating patients whose fear often makes receiving veterinary care challenging. Brooklyn Yard would not be what it is without our amazing technical team!
Happy tech week to all the vet techs out there doing the hard work! You deserve title protection and a pay that reflects your incredible knowledge and skill 🩷
