👋🏼Meet Wilson. Nearly a year ago, this curious neighbor began sporadically hopping the fence into the yard of our reception lead, Ashley.
She and her husband always kept an eye out for him, and over the last few months, he made their backyard his home - with plenty of help from them providing shelter and food!

After utilizing all resources to ensure he doesn’t have a home, they decided it was time to make this friendly neighbor a true member of their family. He was viral tested, vaccinated, and microchipped!

Welcome home Wilson 🩵

Today we wrapped up celebrating Veterinary Technician Week, and while its impossible to properly explain and highlight all that a vet tech does each day, I do want to acknowledge an important part of what our team does (in addition to their 100 other skills!) -
Our clinic is so proud to be able to provide care to a patient base that heavily consists of very anxious, reactive, and sometimes untouchable patients, and our technician team is a huge reason why this is possible.

The spectrum of an animals comfort at the vet is vast, and sometimes a mild oral sedative works great for a nervous patient, but sometimes a heavier sedation is needed. This can range from injections for those who tolerate it, or other techniques for the ones who don’t.

Caring for these patients takes a long time. Hours. It is a collaborative visit between that animal guardian and our medical team, and while we dedicate only a small handful of appointments for these each week, it’s because that one patient is our technician’s *only* priority the entire time they are here.
Managing these visits takes a lot of patience, compassion, and dedication; there are personal safety risks, patient adverse reactions, and sometimes the realization that the plan just isn’t working, and we will need to try again another day.
It can be a lot, but when that fearful animal is able to get a thorough exam and any medical care they need, it is a wonderful feeling for everyone involved.

We love celebrating our veterinary technicians; they are motivated not only because they are passionate about vet med, but they’re also strongly commited to successfully treating patients whose fear often makes receiving veterinary care challenging. Brooklyn Yard would not be what it is without our amazing technical team!

Happy tech week to all the vet techs out there doing the hard work! You deserve title protection and a pay that reflects your incredible knowledge and skill 🩷

PAW Team invited us to do a “takeover” of their wellness clinic today, and I think it’s safe to say we did just that…
16 of us (4 doctors, 12 techs/assistants) spent the day providing routine care to 76 dogs and cats - *breaking the PAW Team record for most patients seen in a day (64).*

We are SO proud of our team, and are constantly amazed at the incredible work PAW Team does for our community every day.

For those unacquainted with them - Portland Animal Welfare Team is a volunteer powered non-profit that provides veterinary care, pet supplies, and support for thousands of people who are experiencing financial hardship, in transitional housing, or living on the streets.
This vital work directly impacts our local community in so many ways, one of those being keeping animals with their family and out of shelters, as proof of vaccinations for a pet means more access to housing and other resources.

The need for routine wellness care (and of course medical care) for dogs and cats is overwhelming, on a local level and beyond, and the layers contributing to this need are complicated. At times it feels impossible, but days like today remind all of us why we do this work, and that as a team we can make a difference.

Thank you to PAW Team for inviting and hosting us, and for all that you do, we feel so honored to be part of your mission and can’t wait to see what else we can accomplish together!
