Saddle fitting is as important as training, shoeing or equine dental work. Periodic consultations to check the fit of a saddle should not be overlooked to keep your horse performing to its potential.
Saddles are the interface between horse and rider and understanding riding is a key part of fitting saddles to enhance performance.
Neither horse nor rider exists in stasis. Everything in our horse-rider-saddle environment is subject to change and as they change, the performance of the horse may change. What works at one point may not work for later. Not every saddle is right for every horse nor for every rider. By the same token, not every rider is right for every horse. Understanding and balancing needs and priorities is part of John’s consultation process. It is important for the rider and helpful for the trainer to be part of the process.
Independent Saddle Fitter John Meriwether has been in the business of improving his clients’ performance through better saddle fit for over 20 years. As a rider and saddle repairer, he regularly consults on saddle-fitting issues for every level of rider from Olympic athletes to beginners. He has trained with leading saddle makers in North America and Great Britain. Much of his work is trouble-shooting poorly fitting saddles and providing corrections. As an independent saddle fitter, John’s first priority is making the horse and rider work better together. If he can help by improving the fit of the current saddle, that is where he starts. As an independent saddle fitter, he is happy to work with any make or model of dressage, jumping or general purpose saddle as long as it does not compromise the horse.
